The Surgeon's Mirror
I
The white bulldog was dead in the garden.
Dr. Arthur Hastings knelt beside the small grave he had dug beneath the rose bushes, his surgeon's hands—steady, precise, capable of suturing a blood vessel no thicker than a hair—trembling as they closed Argo's eyes.
The dog had been dead for hours. Arthur had found him at dawn, as he was finding everything these days: in states of decay that his rational mind struggled to process. Argo lay on his side, one paw extended as though reaching for something just beyond his grasp, his white coat immaculate except for the dark stain around his muzzle.
Cyanide. Arthur knew the smell. He had smelled it in the basement, where he kept his specimens, where he conducted his experiments on the threshold between consciousness and oblivion. New anaesthetic compounds, refined and tested on small animals before being introduced to human patients. Progress, he told himself. Always progress.
But Argo was not a small animal. Argo was a bulldog, massive and loyal and the only living thing in Arthur's house that looked at him without expectation. The dog did not want papers published. He did not want to contribute to medical science. He wanted Arthur to throw the ball, and Arthur always threw the ball, and that had been enough.
Arthur stood. He walked back into the house, up the stairs to his study, and stood before the mirror above the writing desk.
The man in the mirror was thirty-eight, well-groomed, respectable. Dark hair greying at the temples. Clear blue eyes. A face that had been described as "open" and "honest" by people who had never seen the basement.
Arthur touched his reflection's cheek. The reflection touched his own.
"Who did this?" he asked the mirror.
The mirror said nothing. Mirrors never did. They only showed you what was already there.

Detective Thomas Webb arrived on Tuesday. He was a thin man with a thin face and eyes that missed nothing. He examined the garden, examined the dog, examined Arthur with the methodical patience of a man who had spent twenty years in Scotland Yard watching people lie.
"Poison," Webb said. Not a question.
Arthur nodded. "Cyanide. Veterinary grade."
"Anyone see anything?"
"No. The garden faces the back alley. No one would notice."

"He was not a dog. He was a companion."
"Same thing." Webb looked up. "You're a famous man, Doctor Hastings. Your papers on forensic pathology are cited in journals from Edinburgh to Tokyo. Your patients include peers and politicians. But your dog is poisoned and you don't know who did it."
Arthur felt something cold move behind his ribs. Not fear. Recognition. The detective was right, and the truth of it was unbearable: Arthur did know. He knew, in the way that people know things they refuse to acknowledge.
"I don't know," Arthur repeated.
Webb studied him for a long moment. Then he closed his pad and stood. "I'll be in touch, Doctor."
After Webb left, Arthur sat at his desk and opened his journal. He had been keeping it for three months—a record of his symptoms, as he called them. The medical term might have been something else, but Arthur preferred his own terminology because it felt cleaner, more controlled.
The symptoms were simple: memory gaps. Episodes of time that disappeared. Waking in places he did not remember going to. Finding objects on his desk that he did not remember placing there.
He had attributed it to overwork. To the demands of his practice. To the natural fatigue of a man who operated for twelve hours at a time.
But the journal told a different story. The entries were written in two different hands.
Arthur stared at the pages. His own handwriting—precise, angular, clinical—alternated with something else: flowing, ornate, almost poetic. He had never written in that hand. He was certain of it.
The entries in the second hand described things. Things Arthur could not have done. Things he did not want to have done.

Professor Henry Jekyll visited on Friday. He was a psychiatrist, or what the British called a psychiatrist—a man who studied the mind the way Arthur studied the body, except where Arthur saw organs and tissues, Jekyll saw fears and desires and the vast, dark country between them.
They sat in Arthur's study, drinking tea that neither of them tasted. Jekyll was a large man with a large face and eyes that seemed to look through Arthur rather than at him.
"I've read your journal," Jekyll said.
Arthur felt his blood go cold. "Who told you—"
"You gave it to me. Three weeks ago. You don't remember, but you did. You brought it to my office in Soho and said, 'Henry, I think I'm losing my mind.' And I said, 'Arthur, I think you already have.'"
Arthur stared at him. "I don't remember this."
"That's the point." Jekyll leaned forward. "Arthur, I need you to understand something. The mind is not a single thing. It is a country, with borders and territories and populations. Most people live in one region of that country and never venture elsewhere. But some people—some people have borders that are thinner than they realize. And sometimes, other regions send visitors."
Arthur's mouth was dry. "You're saying I have two personalities."
"I'm saying that the human mind is capable of remarkable divisions. You've read Stevenson. You know the story of Jekyll and Hyde."
"That's fiction."
"Is it? Or is it the most honest thing ever written about the human condition?" Jekyll paused. "Arthur, I'm not accusing you of anything. I'm asking you to be honest with yourself. Something in you is doing things that you don't approve of. The question is: are you willing to understand why?"
Arthur thought of the basement. The specimens. The forty-seven small animals arranged in rows, labelled and catalogued, their tiny bodies opened and examined and understood. He had told himself it was for science. He had told himself it was for progress.
But the second hand in the journal told a different story.

The trial lasted three days.
It was not a trial for murder—not in the legal sense. No human being had died. But the public outrage was immense: a respected surgeon, experimenting on animals, lying to the authorities, concealing evidence. The newspapers called it "The Soho Horror." The public demanded justice.
Arthur sat in the dock, watched by reporters and strangers and, in the front row, Professor Jekyll, who watched him with the expression of a man observing a specimen under glass.
On the third day, something extraordinary happened.
Arthur stood to make his final statement. He opened his mouth to speak, and the voice that emerged was not his own.
It was smoother, richer, more confident. It was the voice from the journal. The voice from the mirror.
"Ladies of the jury," the voice said, and Arthur felt himself stepping backward inside his own body, watching from somewhere behind his eyes as another man stood at the defense table and addressed the court.
"You charge me with cruelty. With deception. With moral failure. But I ask you: what is morality but the agreement of the majority to pretend that the minority does not exist?"
The courtroom was silent. The judge leaned forward. Jekyll's eyes widened.
"The human mind contains multitudes," the voice continued. "I am the first to admit this. I have mapped the territories of my own psyche with the same precision I bring to my surgical work. And what I have found is not madness. It is clarity."
Arthur, from somewhere deep inside, was screaming. But his mouth kept moving, and the voice kept speaking.
"My second self—the one you would call Hyde, if you wanted to invoke fiction—does things that my first self finds unacceptable. This is not in dispute. But I ask you to consider: who is more moral? The man who harms while believing himself virtuous? Or the man who harms while knowing exactly what he is doing?"
The prosecutor stood. "Your Honour, this is insanity!"
"No," the voice said. "Insanity is the inability to distinguish reality from fantasy. I distinguish perfectly. I choose, every day, which version of myself will act. And I accept full responsibility for those choices."
The jury was transfixed. Arthur, trapped behind his own eyes, could only watch.
The verdict was guilty. Not of murder, but of "gross misconduct and moral depravity." The sentence: indefinite commitment to Bethlem Royal Hospital.
V
Bethlem was worse than Arthur had imagined. The walls were yellow. The patients were quiet. The nurses moved through the corridors like shadows.
Arthur—no, the voice, the second self—sat in front of the mirror in his cell. It was a small mirror, cracked at the edge, hung on the wall at eye level.
He smiled at his reflection. The reflection smiled back.
"We're free now," he said.
The reflection said nothing. It never did.
But from somewhere behind the mirror, or perhaps from somewhere behind Arthur's eyes, a voice answered: "Yes. We are."
The nurse who passed the cell that night heard two voices speaking. She stopped, pressed her ear to the door, and heard only silence. She moved on, because that was her job: to move on, to check the locks, to record the times, to pretend that the things she heard in the corridors were normal.
In the cell, the man who was also not a man sat before the mirror and smiled, and the mirror smiled back, and the yellow walls held them in, and the silence held them in, and the night held them in, and the city of London held them in, and the world held them in—
