The universe ended on a Thursday. Marcus knew this because he was the only person who knew, and he was sitting in his basement apartment in Brooklyn, eating cold pizza and wondering if he should tell someone or just finish the pizza first.
He chose the pizza.
The discovery had happened three years earlier, on a night that was otherwise unremarkable. Marcus had been analyzing dark matter detection data from a quantum computing cluster he had assembled from scavenged parts—a second-hand GPU rig, a quantum processor he'd bought from an eBay auction that was listed as "experimental educational tool," and a lot of soldering that had kept him awake for forty-eight hours straight.
The data was strange. In the noise of the dark matter detections—random fluctuations, background radiation, cosmic rays—there was a pattern. Not a random pattern. A structured one. A sequence that repeated with mathematical precision at intervals that matched no known natural phenomenon.
Marcus had spent three years confirming what the pattern was. It wasn't a signal from alien intelligence. It was a signature. A signature left by something that wasn't intelligent at all but was certainly artificial—or rather, systematic.
The universe was a database.
Not metaphorically. Not philosophically. Literally. The fundamental constants of physics—the speed of light, Planck's constant, the gravitational constant—were not natural. They were parameters. Variables in a system that stored and retrieved information. The quantum state of every particle in the universe was not a physical property but an index—a pointer to a location in a database that existed in dimensions higher than the ones humans could perceive.
Every time a quantum measurement was made, the database was queried. Every time a particle's state collapsed from superposition to definite, data was being written. The universe was not a physical object. It was a library. And they were the readers.
The terrible part came after.
Marcus discovered that the database was being edited.
Not by humans. Not by any intelligence humans could recognize. But by something—some automated system—systematically deleting certain states. Not all states. Only states that contained no observers. No consciousness. No one to read the data.
"The universe," Marcus wrote in his journal, which he kept locked in a drawer under his bed, "is not a physical reality. It is a read-only memory that is being garbage-collected by an automated process. When no one is reading, the data is deleted. When someone is reading, the data is preserved."
His son Aiden—five years old, with his mother's dark hair and Marcus's stubborn chin—had been born eighteen months after Natasha left. Natasha had taken him without a fight, which was the most heartbreaking part: she had not fought. She had simply packed a bag, held Aiden's hand, and walked out the door while Marcus was at the lab, and when he came home there was a note on the table and an empty space where his family had been.
The note said: "I cannot live in a world that is disappearing. I need something real."
Marcus had wanted to laugh. How can anything be real when the universe is a database being edited by an automated process? But he hadn't laughed. He had sat at the table and read the note four times and then gone to the lab and worked for thirty-six hours straight.
Because Aiden was real. Not physically—his atoms were just indexes in a database. But Aiden was a reader. Aiden was someone who looked at the world and saw it. And as long as Aiden existed, Aiden's part of the universe would be preserved.
That was the logic. It was the only logic he had.
Marcus worked on the encoding project in secret. He couldn't publish—what would he publish? That the universe is a database that is being garbage-collected? They would lock him up. Or worse, they would believe him, and the act of believing would accelerate the process, because belief was a form of observation, and observation was the mechanism of the tear.
So he worked in secret, coding his son's quantum state into a permanent index. Not a backup—not a copy. An index. A permanent marker in the database that said: "This state exists. This state has been read. This state matters."
He used the quantum cluster—the same machine that had discovered the signature—to encode Aiden's quantum fingerprint into the deepest layer of the universe's storage system. It was like carving a name into the foundation of a building that was being demolished. He knew it wouldn't save Aiden. Aiden would die. All of them would die. The database would be cleared. The universe would end.
But the index would remain. An index of something that no longer existed. A reference to a file that had been deleted.
He finished the encoding on a night in March. He was sitting in his chair, the quantum cluster humming beside him, Aiden asleep in the next room. He looked at the screen. The encoding was complete. Aiden's quantum state was now a permanent entry in the universe's database—a marker that said: "Here was a boy named Aiden, born in 2037, who lived for sixty-eight years, who loved dinosaurs and peanut butter sandwiches and the way the sun looked through the window in the morning."
Marcus closed his eyes. He had done the only thing he could do. He had made his son an index. A reference. A citation. Something that would persist even after the data was gone.
Three years later, Marcus sat in his Brooklyn basement, looking out the window at the New York lights. The city was the same as it had always been—bustling, loud, indifferent. People walked the streets, went to work, came home, fell in love, got divorced, had children, grew old, died. They had no idea that they were living in a database that was being systematically cleared.
Marcus opened his computer. He began to write an email. He would never send it. The recipient didn't exist—not in any conventional sense. He addressed it to "The Editor"—the automated system that was deleting unread data from the universe's database.
The first line was: "I know you are reading this. I also know you don't care. But let me finish my sentence."
He wrote for three hours. He wrote about Aiden. He wrote about Natasha. He wrote about the day he discovered the signature and how the world had not changed at all—the sun had risen, people had taken the subway, a pigeon had defecated on the windowsill. The universe was ending and the pigeon didn't know it.
When he finished, he read what he had written. It was a beautiful, terrible thing—a love letter to a universe that was being edited, a complaint filed with a system that didn't have a mailbox.
He saved the file. He locked it in the drawer. He went to sleep.
In the morning, he made coffee, woke Aiden for school, kissed him on the forehead, and watched him walk to the bus stop with his backpack and his dinosaur lunchbox.
The universe continued. The database continued to be edited. The index remained.
And somewhere, in a dimension higher than the ones humans could perceive, a process ran its course and deleted a file that no one was reading.
But the index stayed.
