The Unburnt Letters

ACT I

The ball at Darrow House was everything Clara Whitmore had been told a ball should be and everything she had feared it would be. Chandeliers burned with enough candles to light a small army. Ladies in silk drifted through the gaslit hall like ghosts who had never learned to be transparent. And at the center of it all, as Clara had suspected from the moment she arrived, was Lord Edmund Ashworth.

He was dancing with the daughter of Lord Pemberton—a tall, fair girl with a laugh like silver bells and a dowry that could have purchased half of Yorkshire. Clara watched from the shadow of a potted palm, her thin muslin dress making her feel like a question nobody had asked.

It was Edmund who ended the dance, not with a bow to his partner, but with a step toward the shadows where Clara stood. He found her the way a man finds something he had not known was missing.

"There is a vacancy here," he said, and his voice was low enough that only she could hear it over the orchestra. "And I find myself unable to think of anyone better suited to fill it."

Clara did not understand what he meant. She stood with her hands clasped before her, listening to him speak as though she were the most interesting person in the room, and thinking that if this was how rejection sounded, she could bear it.

The garden after the ball was soaked in a rain that had been falling since dusk. Clara, having excused herself on the grounds of a headache—a headache that was not feigned but born of the particular agony of watching Edmund smile at everyone except her—had wandered out to the rose garden and sat on a stone bench beneath a weeping willow.

Edmund found her there.

He did not apologize for following her. He sat beside her on the bench, which was wider than it looked, and the proximity was so unexpected that Clara forgot her headache entirely.

"You don't dance," he said. It was not a question.

"I prefer to watch," Clara replied.

"Watching is a form of dancing when you do it well."

She looked at him then, properly. The candlelight from the ball had been replaced by the gray light of a rain-soaked night, and in this light, Edmund Ashworth was not the idler and heir of Yorkshire society. He was a man with amber eyes and a mouth that suggested he was always on the verge of saying something important and had decided, on balance, not to.

"What did you mean," Clara asked, "when you said there was a vacancy?"

Edmund looked at her for a long time. The rain fell between them like a curtain.

"I mean that I have a great deal of room," he said at last, "and very little of it is being used well."

He stood and offered her his hand. She took it. They walked back to the ball in silence, and when they reached the door, Edmund did not let go of her hand immediately.

Miss Penelope Ashworth was Edmund's sister and, by some cruel arrangement of family, Clara's only friend at Darrow House. She was kind in the way that people who have never been truly hungry are kind to those who are.

"You must not take him at his word," Penelope said one evening, when Clara confided in her—the only time in her life she had confided in anyone about anything. "Edmund says many things. They are not promises."

"Then what was he saying in the garden?"

Penelope looked at her with an expression that was half sorrow, half exhaustion. "He was being kind. It is his greatest flaw and his greatest virtue."

Clara did not understand this either. She understood only that Edmund had spoken to her in a way that no one had ever spoken to her before, and that he had not spoken to anyone else in the same way. She decided, with the absolute certainty of nineteen-year-old girls who have never been wrong about anything that matters, that this was love.

Edmund married the daughter of Lord Pemberton in the spring. The wedding was announced with the appropriate amount of fanfare, and Clara attended the church service from the back row, where she was supposed to sit.

That night, in the sickroom that had been her mother's and was now hers, Clara wrote her first letter. She wrote it on paper that was too fine for her station and with ink that was too dark, and she did not address it. She simply wrote:

I did not understand you then, and I understand you now, and neither understanding has been of any use to me.

She wrote another the next night. And another. And another. Each letter was addressed to a different version of Edmund—the Edmund of the garden, the Edmund of the ball, the Edmund of the church, the Edmund who existed only in her imagination and who was, in every possible version, someone she could not have.

She never sent a single one.

The manor caught fire three years later. Clara was in the sickroom with a fever that would have killed her if anyone had been competent enough to care for her properly. The fire began in the east wing—Edmund's wing, though he had not lived there for two years.

She watched the flames from her window as Thomas Finch, the farm boy who had loved her silently for years, lifted her into his arms and carried her down the stairs.

"Don't look back," he said.

Clara looked back. She saw the roof collapse in slow motion, she saw the library windows blow outward like eyes, she saw the place where her desk stood and where the locked drawer contained forty-three letters written to a man who was married to another woman and who would never, in any universe she could imagine, learn that she existed.

The letters burned. But the heat was not hot enough. Some of them curled and blackened and fell to the floor, and in the morning, when the ashes were swept, the fireman found them arranged in the shape of words that could not be read.

Thomas Finch married Clara a year later. They had two children. She was twenty-four. The letters were never found.

Thomas Finch was a good man, which is not the same as a great man, and Clara understood this before the wedding and throughout the marriage and in the years that followed. He was kind in the way that farm boys are kind—without thinking about it, without keeping score, without expecting anything in return. He fixed her roof. He brought her bread when her father was ill. He held her when she cried in the sickroom, though she never told him why she was crying.

"You don't have to," he said once, when she asked.

"Have to what?"

"Cry. You don't have to explain it."

Clara thought about this. She thought about how Edmund Ashworth had spoken to her in the garden and how she had not understood him, and how Penelope had translated his words and she had understood them too well, and how understanding had been the worst possible thing.

"I know," she said. "I just can't stop."

Thomas nodded, and it was the most he ever said about it. He was a man who understood that some wounds do not bleed outward—they bleed inward, quietly, into the places that nobody can see."

The manor fire was talked about in the village for weeks. People said it was lightning. People said it was the old wiring. People said it was a sign. Clara said nothing. She sat in the sickroom—now just a room, since the fever had taken her—and she listened to the rain on the roof and thought about letters that had not burned completely, and she wondered if fire, like love, is never quite as thorough as we would like it to be.

She died in the spring, at twenty-four, in the same room where she had written her first letter seventeen years earlier. Thomas buried her in the churchyard next to her mother, and he visited her grave every Sunday for the rest of his life, and he never told anyone why.

The ashes from the fire were swept away. The desk was burned. The drawer was ash. But if anyone had looked carefully at the garden, where the rain had carried the smoke and the heat and the unburnt fragments of forty-three letters, they would have seen that something had fallen from the sky that spring that was not rain and not ash and not anything that belonged to the natural world. It was something that had been written by a girl who loved a man who loved another woman, and it was the only honest thing she had ever written.
