ACT ONE: THE ARRIVAL (20%)
The fog on the Thames did not lift in the morning of Eleanor Vance's return. Eleanor got in without speaking. The driver said nothing either. The wheels clacked over wet cobblestones, and London swallowed her whole.

"What reason?"

"Perhaps someday," he said. "Not tonight."
They sat in silence while the fire burned down. Outside, the fog pressed against the windows like a living thing. Eleanor felt, for the first time since arriving, that someone beside her understood what was happening. It was not comfort. But it was something.
Before she left the library, Julian said: "There's something you should know about the Victoria. The ship didn't just sink. It was pulled under."

The door opened. Light flooded in.
"Check the cellar," a voice said. Arthur Vance's voice. Calm, precise, the voice of a man who had ordered deaths without raising his pulse. "She'll come looking. She has her father's stubbornness."
Another voice: a servant's. "Shall we fetch the constables, my lord?"
"No. Constables ask questions. We need silence. If she's down here, bring her up. Alive, if possible."
Eleanor's hand closed around the pistol. She had never fired a gun. But she had watched her father practice, and she remembered the weight of it, the trigger pull.
She waited until the men were halfway through the shelves, their backs to her. Then she moved.
She didn't shoot to kill. She shot at the gas lamp.
The bullet struck the iron fixture, and gas erupted in a hiss. Sparks from a passing lantern ignited it—a flash of blue flame that filled the cellar with heat and light. The men shouted. Eleanor ran.
She burst through the door and up the stairs, her heart hammering. The fog outside was thicker than ever. She could barely see the dock, the river, anything. But she ran anyway, the box in one hand, the pistol in the other, the wooden ship in her pocket.
Boots pounded behind her. She reached the end of the dock and stopped.
Ahead: water. Behind: footsteps.
She turned.
Julian stood at the mouth of the alley, a pistol in his hand, his face grim.
"Over here," he said.
She ran to him. He grabbed her hand and pulled her into the fog. They ran through the streets of Wapping, past sleeping pubs and dark warehouses, until the sound of pursuit faded.
They stopped in a narrow courtyard behind a church. Julian pressed his back against the wall, breathing hard. Eleanor did the same.
"They know," she said.
"Yes."
"What do we do?"
He looked at her. In the dim light, his face was all angles and shadows. "We finish it. Whatever's left."
ACT FOUR: THE AFTERMATH (15%)
The diary was in her room, hidden beneath the floorboards—a small leather book her mother had written in secret, the pages filled with cramped handwriting. Eleanor had found it the night before last, and she had not slept since.
She sat on the bed with the diary open on her lap. Her mother's words:
"Arthur knows I have written this. He will come for it. If anything happens to me, tell Eleanor the truth. Tell her her father was murdered. Tell her I was locked in the cellar for three days because I would not stop asking questions. Tell her the truth, even if it destroys her. Because the truth is the only thing they cannot take away."
Eleanor closed the diary.
Julian stood by the window. He had packed a small bag.
"I'm leaving tonight," he said. "Going to Parliament. I have contacts—men who will listen, if I can reach them before Arthur's men find me."
"And if they don't listen?"
"Then I fail. And Arthur wins." He turned to face her. "You should come with me."
She shook her head. "If I leave, there's no one to guard the diary. If Arthur gets it, he'll destroy it—and me with it."
He was silent for a long time. Then he crossed the room and took her hand. His palm was rough, calloused, warm.
"Then I'll come back," he said. "That's a promise."
He left at midnight. Eleanor stood at the window and watched him disappear into the fog.
The next morning, she heard footsteps on the stairs. Heavy, deliberate. Arthur Vance.
She put the diary in her coat, picked up the lantern, and walked to the door.
The manor garden lay ahead of her, the magnolia trees standing in the fog like ghosts. The Thames was somewhere beyond the trees, dark and endless.
She did not know what would happen next. She only knew that she would not go quietly into that house.
She stepped into the fog and kept walking.
