The Passing
Brenda worked the register at Walmart on East Market Street. She had worked there for six years, which meant she had stood in the same spot for six years, scanning items, saying "have a nice day," and watching people look through her the way people look through the plastic bags at the checkout.
She was forty-one years old. Her knees hurt. Her hands smelled like cardboard and scanner plastic. She drank beer in the mornings because the mornings were the hardest.
The thing about passing is that nobody tells you how tired it makes you. You think it's about looking a certain way. It's not. It's about being tired. It's about waking up every day and putting on the face that the world will accept and carrying that face around like a stone in your pocket.
Brenda's face was white. Not naturally—she wasn't born white, she had learned to be white. Her mother was Puerto Rican, a woman named Rosa who had come to Youngstown with nothing but a suitcase and a determination to disappear. "Brenda," she had said. "Not Brenda. You're Brenda. You look like your father. You are your father's daughter. Do you understand?"
Brenda had understood. She had learned to say "my dad" instead of "my father." She had learned to say "Frank" instead of "the man who left." She had learned to stand in line at school and let the other mothers assume she was white because her hair was straight and her eyes were light and her skin was the color of weak tea.
She passed through elementary school. She passed through high school, where a guidance counselor tried to put her in the vocational track and her mother fought him until he backed down. She passed through the one job she ever had that mattered, where a manager once called her "honey" and she realized that to him, she was just another white girl from the right side of town.
Then she passed into Walmart, where passing didn't matter because nobody at Walmart looked at anyone at all.
Her brother Darnell couldn't pass.
Darnell was thirty-eight, black, and beautiful in a way that made Brenda's chest ache when she thought about it. He had dark skin the color of rich earth, wide lips, and hair that refused to be straightened no matter what his mother did. He had a laugh that filled rooms and a walk that took up space. He was everything Brenda was not, and she loved him for it and resented him for it and missed him more than anything.
Darnell had refused to pass. "I'm not hiding," he had told her once, when they were kids and their mother was in the kitchen. "I'm not trying to be someone I'm not. Mom can do what she wants. But I'm black. I'm Darnell. That's it."
Rosa had cried. She had cried a lot, in the years after Frank left, in the years she spent trying to mold her children into something the world would accept. She had molded Brenda. She had failed with Darnell. And then she had died, three years after Frank, and the children were on their own.
Darnell lasted three more years after that.
Overdose. That's what the coroner said. Overdose. That's what Brenda said at the funeral, because "overdose" was a word that implied a choice, and she needed to believe that Darnell had chosen something, even if that something was death.
After Darnell died, Brenda started seeing him.
Not really. She knew that. She knew that the man sitting on her couch in the early morning, the man who looked like Darnell and smelled like Darnell and wore Darnell's old jacket, was not real. He was alcohol. He was withdrawal. He was the slow erosion of a mind that had spent forty-one years carrying a weight it was never meant to carry.

Darnell would nod. He would smile. And then he would be gone.
Sarah noticed.
Sarah was twenty-five, white, and from Ohio, which meant she had grown up believing that the world was smaller than it was and kinder than it deserved to be. She worked the register next to Brenda at Walmart, and she had been trying to be Brenda's friend for six months.
" You seem tired," Sarah said one afternoon, while they stood in the break room drinking coffee that tasted like burnt water. "Everything okay?"
Brenda shrugged. "Fine. Just sleeping bad."
"You want to talk about it?"
Brenda looked at Sarah. Sarah's face was open and concerned and annoyingly sincere. It was the kind of face that had never been threatened by the world and therefore never had to learn how to hide.
"I'm fine," Brenda said.
Sarah nodded. She didn't believe her. But she didn't push. Sarah was good at not pushing.
The bread happened on a Thursday.
Brenda was in the grocery aisle, standing in front of the bread section, looking at the loaves of white bread like they held the answers to questions she couldn't articulate. She didn't need bread. She had bread at home. Three loaves, actually, because she bought in bulk and the bread went stale and she threw it out and bought more.
She wanted bread because buying bread felt like being a person who bought bread. A person with a home and a kitchen and a routine and a life that wasn't held together by beer and habit and the memory of a brother who refused to disappear.
She put a loaf in her cart. She pushed the cart to the register. She put her hand in her pocket and felt the crumpled bills and counted them and knew she had enough. She always had enough. The problem wasn't money. The problem was something else.
She put the bread on the conveyor belt. She didn't take it out again. She just stood there, staring at the loaf, her hand resting on it, her mind full of static.
Sarah scanned it. "That'll be two-fifty."
Brenda's hand moved. She slid the bread off the belt and into her bag. It was such a small thing. A loaf of bread. Two-fifty. She had the money. She had pulled it out of her pocket and was holding it, ready to hand it to Sarah, when her hand moved on its own, sliding the bread into the bag like a thief.
Sarah saw.
She didn't say anything. She didn't call security. She didn't frown or gasp or do anything that Brenda expected. She just looked at Brenda with those open, sincere Ohio eyes and she said:
"You don't have to do that."
The words landed like stones in still water. Brenda felt the ripples move through her, through her arms and her chest and her throat, until they reached her mouth and opened it without permission.
"I—" she began. She stopped. She began again. "I have the money."
"I know you have the money." Sarah's voice was quiet. Gentle. "I'm not talking about the money."
Brenda looked at Sarah. She looked at the bread in the bag. She looked at her own hands, which were shaking again, which they did a lot lately, which she blamed on the beer but knew were something else.
"What are you talking about?" she asked.
Sarah didn't answer. She bagged the bread properly this time, took Brenda's money, and said, "Have a nice day."
Brenda walked out of Walmart with the bread in her hand and the words in her head and the ghost of her brother sitting on her couch waiting for her to come home.
That night, she sat in her apartment—the one with the mold in the bathroom corner and the broken lock on the front door and the couch where Darnell sat every morning—and she looked at the photograph she kept in a drawer under her bed.
It was the last photograph of Darnell. He was smiling, his head tilted back, his eyes closed against the sun. He was wearing a t-shirt that said BLACK and proud and he looked, in that moment, completely and utterly at peace.
Brenda picked up her phone. She scrolled through her contacts until she found the number she hadn't called in three years. Darnell's wife, Tasha. The woman who had held Darnell's hand when he died and had held Brenda's hand when she cried and had then disappeared into the grief that connects people who love the same person.
The phone rang. Once. Twice. Three times. Four times.
"Hello?" Tasha's voice was tired. Not unkind. Just tired. The tired of a woman who had buried her husband and was still trying to figure out how to live in a world without him.
Brenda's hand shook. The phone nearly fell. She held it tighter.
"It's Bri," she said. Her voice was small and broken and real. "I mean—Brenda. It's Brenda. I—I want to tell you something about Dad."
