I.

The Velvet Moon nightclub smelled of cigarette smoke and expensive perfume and the kind of desperation that only exists in cities built on dreams that never materialize. Vivian Cross stood behind the small stage and adjusted the microphone and watched the room fill up with men who looked like they had never heard a woman say no.

She began to sing.

Her voice was the kind of voice that made people stop talking and turn around and order another drink so they would have something to do with their hands. It was low and smoky and carried a tremor that was not quite sadness and not quite joy but something that lived in the space between them, the way rain lives in the space between cloud and ground.

In the third row, a man in an expensive suit listened to her with the expression of someone who was hearing a secret he had not been meant to know. Lawrence Blackwood was fifty-two, a partner at one of Los Angeles's most prestigious law firms, and he had a habit of leaving thick envelopes on the table after every performance. Vivian had learned to count them while she played. They always contained two thousand dollars. She did not know why. She did not ask.

She finished her set to scattered applause and went backstage to change. Her costume for the next set was simpler: a black dress, no jewelry, hair pulled back. She looked like a secretary. She was, in fact, a secretary at Blackwood's firm during the day, typing up contracts and filing documents and pretending not to notice the way the junior associates looked at her when they thought she was not watching.

The second set was quieter. Fewer drunk men, more serious faces. Vivian sang slower songs, ballads that hung in the air like smoke. When she finished, she went to her office at the law firm to finish some paperwork and found a file on her desk that was not supposed to be there.

It was locked. Vivian picked the lock with a hairpin, the way she had learned to do in a hundred different movies and which she had never actually expected to use. Inside the file were photographs. Twenty-three of them. Young women, all of them, all of them smiling in different ways at different cameras. On the back of each photograph was a date. The last date was three weeks ago.

Vivian recognized five of the women. One of them had sung at the Velvet Moon. She had disappeared six months ago. Nobody had asked questions. Nobody had called the police.

She took the file home and locked it in her suitcase and did not sleep all night.

II.

The diagnosis came on a Thursday. Vivian had been feeling tired, the kind of tired that sleep does not fix. She had blamed it on working double shifts at the club and the law firm. The doctor had blamed it on stress. The scan had blamed it on something called a malignancy, which is a medical word for cancer that sounds less frightening than what it actually means.

"You have a few months," the doctor said. He was young, maybe thirty-five, and he had the kind of face that suggested he had not yet learned how to deliver bad news without wanting to take it back. "We can start treatment, but—"

"I know what you're going to say," Vivian said. She was sitting on the examination table, looking at the ceiling tiles, counting the holes. "I don't want treatment."

The doctor looked up sharply. "You don't want treatment? Miss, you have cancer."

"I know."

"Then why—"

"Because I have something I need to do first."

She left the hospital and went to the Velvet Moon and sang a set that made half the room cry and the other half order another drink and pretend they were not crying. After the set, she went to the file cabinet in her apartment, took out the photographs, and spread them on her kitchen table.

Twenty-three women. Twenty-three dates. Twenty-three lives that had ended in ways that nobody questioned because the women who had lived them were the kind of women whose absence went unnoticed.

Vivian picked up the phone and dialed a number she had found in Blackwood's file. It belonged to a private detective named Jack Morrison. The file said he used to be LAPD before he was suspended for "conduct unbecoming." It said he specialized in cases involving "persons of interest."

"Morrison," a voice answered. The voice was rough, like gravel in a tin can.

"My name is Vivian Cross. I need your help."

"I don't help people," Morrison said. "I find things. There's a difference."

"Then find this," Vivian said. "Find out who Lawrence Blackwood really is."

III.

Morrison came to the Velvet Moon on a rainy Tuesday. He was thirty-five, built like a man who used to be an athlete and had not stopped using his body even when he stopped playing sports. He wore a trench coat and a face that said he had seen everything and was not impressed by any of it.

He sat in the front row and listened to Vivian sing and did not order a drink. After the set, he went backstage and stood in the doorway and watched her pack up her things.

"You're playing with fire, sweetheart," he said.

"I know," Vivian said. "That's the point."

Morrison was not wrong. Blackwood was not just a lawyer. He was a predator who had spent twenty years building a network of connections that extended from the police department to the city council to the DA's office. He killed women who knew too much, and he did it in ways that looked like accidents or suicides or disappearances. The women in the photographs were the ones who had gotten close to the truth.

Vivian was number twenty-four.

She knew this because Morrison found out. He spent three weeks digging, and what he found made him stop drinking for the first time in two years. Blackwood's operation was vast, sophisticated, and protected by people who would never admit it existed.

"So what's the play?" Morrison said, spreading the documents on Vivian's kitchen table. "We go to the press? The police?"

Vivian shook her head. "The police are on his payroll. The press won't touch this. And if we go to the DA, he'll disappear before we finish reading the indictment."

"Then what?"

Vivian looked at him steadily. "I'm going to kill him."

Morrison stared at her. "You have cancer. You have months to live. Why risk—"

"Because I'm not going to die quietly," Vivian said. "I'm not going to be number twenty-four, and I'm not going to let him kill another woman while I sit in a hospital bed and wait to die. If I'm going down, I'm taking him with me."

IV.

The trap was simple and insane, which was exactly the kind of plan Vivian preferred.

She wrote Blackwood a letter. It was careful, calculated, designed to trigger every one of his vices. It suggested that she had found something in his files that he wanted back. It suggested that she was willing to negotiate. It suggested that she wanted to meet in private.

Blackwood took the bait. Of course he did. Men like him always did.

The meeting was set for the Velvet Moon, in the private booth upstairs, after the club closed. Vivian would be alone. Morrison would be outside the door with a gun. If things went wrong, Morrison would call Detective Torres, the one cop in Blackwood's network who had never taken a bribe.

It went wrong anyway.

Blackwood brought two men. They were not supposed to bring men. The plan had accounted for Blackwood alone. Vivian had not accounted for two armed men in a room the size of a closet.

"Miss Cross," Blackwood said, stepping into the booth with the casual confidence of a man who had never lost a negotiation in his life. "You wanted to see me?"

"I did," Vivian said. She was sitting on the couch, perfectly still, her hands folded in her lap. She was not afraid. She had stopped being afraid three weeks ago, when the doctor told her she had cancer. Death was no longer a threat. It was a deadline.

Blackwood's eyes moved around the room, assessing, calculating. He saw the gun under Vivian's dress. He saw the tension in her shoulders. He was smart enough to know something was wrong. But he was arrogant enough to believe he could handle it.

"What do you want?" he asked.

"Everything you have," Vivian said. "On paper. Names, dates, bank accounts. Everything."

Blackwood smiled. It was not a nice smile. "You think I'm going to hand you my entire operation because you wrote me a cute little letter?"

"No," Vivian said. "I think you're going to hand it to me because I have something you want."

She pulled the file from her bag—the one she had found in her office. The one with the photographs.

Blackwood's face went pale. For the first time in his life, he was afraid.

"Where did you get that?" he whispered.

"Does it matter?" Vivian said.

It did not matter. Because at that moment, the door burst open and Morrison stepped in with his gun raised, and Blackwood's two bodyguards drew their weapons, and the room became a cage of steel and smoke and the sound of gunfire that was louder than anything Vivian had ever heard in her life.

She did not think. She reacted. She reached under the dress, pulled the gun she had never fired in her life, and pointed it at Blackwood.

She pulled the trigger.

The gun kicked against her palm like an angry animal. The bullet hit Blackwood in the chest, and he fell backward into the wall, and the sound of his body hitting the plaster was the loudest thing in the room.

Then something hit Vivian in the side, sharp and hot, and she felt herself falling, and the last thing she heard was Morrison's voice, shouting something she could not understand, and the sound of the Velvet Moon's neon sign buzzing outside the window, and the knowledge that she had done what she came to do.

She died on the couch of a private booth in a nightclub in Los Angeles, at 2:47 AM on a Thursday in November. She was twenty-six years old.

Morrison buried her in a small cemetery in the hills outside the city. He placed a single white rose on her grave and a tape recorder beside it. The tape contained Vivian's final performance at the Velvet Moon, recorded the night before she wrote Blackwood the letter.

After Morrison left, a voice on the other end of a payphone in a diner three blocks away pressed play on a cassette recorder and listened to Vivian's voice fill the empty room.

"I heard it," the voice said. "The game continues."
