The letter arrived on a Tuesday, carried by a postman who would not meet Arthur Winthrop's eyes. It was from a solicitor in Leeds, a man named Croft who spoke of distant relatives and inherited estates with the careful detachment of someone who had delivered such news many times before.

He did not pull away. He stood there, watching the blood soak into the wheat, knowing that the wheat would grow, knowing that it would feed him, knowing that it would kill someone else.
