The Light of Others
The煤油灯 cast long shadows across Samuel Washington's classroom, making the chalk-dusted walls seem to breathe. Outside, Harlem was loud—saxophones bleeding from the club on 135th Street, the rattle of streetcars, the murmur of a neighborhood that had learned to sing over its own suffering.
"Tell me again," said Lila Johnson, sitting in the front row. She was twelve, small for her age, with eyes so dark they seemed to absorb the lamplight rather than reflect it. "Tell me about the stars again."
Samuel set down his chalk. His hands were cracked and stained with ink—a teacher's hands, worn by work. He was thirty-five, but in the coal-dust pallor of his complexion and the slight stoop of his shoulders, he looked ten years older. He came from the hills of West Virginia, from a town so small it appeared on no map anyone could find.
"Very well," he said. "The stars do not move in straight lines. They move in circles—around their own centres, around each other, around nothing at all, or something we cannot name. The Earth turns beneath us, and we do not feel it. Can you imagine that?"
"I can," Lila said. "I feel it sometimes. When I lie in bed at night. The whole world is spinning, and I'm just—here."
Samuel smiled. It was his favourite student. Not because she was the brightest, though she was—though she could recite everything from the multiplication table to the orbit of Saturn with the ease of someone breathing—but because she asked the questions that no one else thought to ask.
"Miss Johnson," he said. "Do you believe there are other worlds?"
"I believe there are other people," Lila said. "And if there are other people, there must be other worlds for them to stand on. You can't have people without ground, Mr. Washington. It wouldn't be right."
Samuel felt something tighten in his chest. He looked around the room at the other children—ten of them in total, all Black, all poor, all sitting on wooden benches that wobbled when they shifted. They believed him. They believed him because he believed, and his belief was a thing they could hold in their hands like a warm stone.
He did not tell them that tomorrow the school might cease to exist.

The notice had come on a Thursday, folded in an envelope that cost more than Samuel's monthly salary. The Urban Development Company wanted to tear down the block. Not just the school—the whole block. Suitable. Appropri-ate. Words that could flatten a neighbourhood as easily as a steamroller flattens a curb.
Samuel stood in the doorway of the schoolhouse that evening, reading the letter one more time. Behind him, the classroom was empty except for Lila, who had stayed after to help him organize his notes.
"Mr. Washington?" she said. "Are those stars on other planets black too?"
He turned. Lila was holding one of his notebooks, her small fingers carefully tracing the lines of his handwriting. She could not read—blind, as she had been since birth—but she had learned to memorize. She knew more astronomy than any child in Harlem, perhaps than any adult.
"That's a good question," Samuel said. "I don't know, Lila. Do you want to know the answer?"
"Yes."
"Then we'll find out together."
She smiled. It was a bright smile, the kind that made you forget she couldn't see it.

The tuberculosis came in December. It began as a cough—small, almost polite, the kind of cough you suppress in a classroom full of children. But the cough grew. It became something that lived inside Samuel's chest and would not be dislodged.
The doctor—a kind man named Mr. O'Connell who treated all his Black patients the same, which in 1925 meant he treated them with gentleness and nothing else—put his stethoscope on Samuel's back and listened for a long time.
"Mr. Washington," he said quietly. "You need rest. Actual rest. Not this teaching-rest. Real rest."
"I can't stop teaching, Mr. O'Connell."
"You'll be dead if you don't."
Samuel looked at the window. Outside, Harlem was snowing—the first snow of the season, fine and slow, dusting the rooftops in white. He thought of Lila's question. Do you believe there are other worlds?
"Yes," he said. "But not this one."

In his final weeks, Samuel worked at night by candlelight. He could not sleep—sleep brought dreams of classrooms full of children who would have nowhere to go, of a school building reduced to rubble, of Lila standing in the dust and reaching for a notebook that was no longer there.
So he wrote. He wrote everything he had learned—everything he had ever taught—into notebooks. Star charts, mathematical tables, the names of every constellation known to humanity, the orbits of every planet, the distances between stars measured in light-years. He organized it all by hand, his handwriting growing shakier each day, his fingers trembling so badly that some of the letters were illegible.
Lila came every evening after her work at the garment factory—sewing collars for twelve dollars a week—and sat beside his cot, reading his notes back to him in her clear, steady voice.
"'Sirius—the brightest star in the night sky. Distance from Earth: 8.6 light-years. Type: binary star. Note: the ancient Egyptians used Sirius to predict the flooding of the Nile.'"
"Good," Samuel whispered. "Keep going."
"Mr. Washington, why are you doing this? The school—maybe it won't be torn down."
He shook his head. "It will."
"Then why—"
"Because someone needs to remember. Not the school. The stars. The school is bricks and wood. The stars are—" He searched for the word. "The stars are permanent. Someone needs to carry them."
Lila was silent for a long time. Then she said: "I'll carry them."
Samuel reached out and found her hand. Her fingers were rough from sewing—the hands of a worker, but they held knowledge like a treasure.
"Promise me," he said.
"I promise."

Samuel Washington died on a winter night in February. The candle had burned down to a small pool of wax. His last notebook lay open on his chest, and on the last page, in handwriting so faint it was barely legible, he had written a single sentence:
"The stars turn, and in their turning, they carry us all."
Lila was there. She held his hand as the breathing stopped, as the room went quiet, as Harlem's jazz drifted through the window like a prayer.
She did not cry. She simply closed the notebook and placed it against her chest, where her heart was beating steady and strong.
Three weeks later, the Urban Development Company began demolishing the block. The school building fell in six hours. Lila stood across the street and watched it happen. She carried the notebook in her coat pocket, and when a brick struck the ground and sent up a cloud of dust, she opened the coat and pressed the notebook tighter against her body, as if shielding it from the sky itself.
But the notebook was safe.

The notebooks contained everything—every star, every planet, every equation. And on the first page, in letters that were large and clear and certain, was a dedication:
"To whoever finds this: the stars turn, and they carry us all. Do not let them fall."
The diplomat read the notebooks on the train ride home. He could not read well—he was a man of politics, not of scholarship—but he recognized something when he saw it. This was not just knowledge. This was a gift. A gift from a teacher who had died so that strangers might one day look up and see the stars.
He took the notebooks back to Africa. He used them to establish a scholarship programme for children who showed promise in science. And when the first generation of scholars passed their qualifying examination, the first question on the test was taken directly from Samuel Washington's notebooks:
"Describe the motion of the stars. What do they revolve around, and what does their turning mean for those who watch them?"
A hundred young minds bent over their papers. And somewhere, in the dust of a demolished schoolhouse in Harlem, a teacher who had died in the cold of a February night smiled.
The stars were turning. And they were carrying him.
