The Victorian Dream
ACT I: THE AWAKENING IN DARKNESS
The fog came in off the Thames like a living thing, curling around the broken pillars of St. Jude's Church with fingers of grey wool. Edmund Ashworth lay on the cold flagstones where he had collapsed three nights ago, or perhaps three years ago. Time had lost all meaning in the furnace of his fever.
He had been an officer once. Lieutenant Edmund Ashworth, 47th Regiment, East India Company. Brave enough in the field, reckless enough in the bottle, proud enough to insult his commanding officer in front of the entire mess. The dismissal had been swift. The return to London, humiliating. The descent into this ruin, inevitable.
He remembered the last thing clearly: the taste of cheap brandy, the sound of rain on the shattered stained glass, the way the fog pressed against the broken doors like someone trying to get in. Then nothing. Or everything. He could not tell the difference anymore.
When his eyes opened, they did not see the ruined ceiling of St. Jude's.
They saw a canopy of crimson velvet, embroidered with golden thread in patterns he could not name but somehow understood. The air smelled of beeswax and orange blossoms. A window beside him showed a garden of impossible greenness, terraced hills rolling into a distant sea under a sky the colour of polished silver.
"Your Majesty."
The voice was soft, feminine, carrying the weight of genuine reverence. Edmund turned his head on a pillow that felt softer than anything he had ever known. A woman knelt beside his bed. She wore a gown of pale blue silk, her dark hair arranged in an elaborate coiffure that spoke of a thousand careful hours. Her eyes were the colour of the sea he could see through the window.
"Where am I?" Edmund asked. His voice sounded strange to his own ears—clearer, stronger, as though the fever had burned away something heavy.
"You are in Avalon, my lord. The King has been most anxious for your recovery."
She rose and offered him her hand. Her fingers were cool, her grip firm. He took it and found himself standing without effort, as though his body remembered a strength his mind had forgotten.
"The King," he repeated.
"Your father-in-law, sire. He sits in council even now, but he will send for you presently. In the meantime, perhaps you would walk in the gardens? The Princess—your wife—was most concerned."
ACT II: THE GOLDEN YEARS
Her name was Eleanor. Princess Eleanor of Avalon, daughter of King Aldric the Wise, wife of Edmund, who was not Edmund the drunkard and the disgrace, but Edmund, Lord Protector of the Eastern Marches, Governor of North Ke, beloved of the people.
He learned his new life the way one learns a language—through immersion, through repetition, through the slow accretion of habit. He governed his province with a mixture of instinct and genuine ability he did not know he possessed. He settled disputes between merchant families, reformed the tax system, built roads and schools and a hospital that still stands, they told him, three centuries later.
Eleanor loved him with a quiet constancy that surprised him again and again. She was not beautiful in the way the court painters depicted beauty—she was more interesting than that. She could debate philosophy with the scholars, tend the sick in the hospital, and play the lute with a skill that made courtiers weep. She was, in every way, a woman worth governing for.
Twenty years passed. Or perhaps twenty days. The fever did not allow for precise measurement.
In the dream, they were happy. Not the bright, careless happiness of youth, but the deeper, more complicated happiness of two people who have faced hardship together and chosen each other again and again. There were years of peace, years of famine that he worked himself to the bone to alleviate, years of border skirmishes that he handled with a military mind he did not know he had.
Then Eleanor grew ill.
It began as a cough—nothing more, the physicians said. A chest cold, common in the changing seasons. But the cough deepened, and the colour left her cheeks, and the physicians shook their heads in ways that spoke volumes.
Edmund stood by her bedside on the last night, holding her hand as she had held his on their wedding day, twenty years before. The garden outside the window was in autumn now, leaves falling like gold coins into the grass.
"Edmund," she whispered. Her voice was thin as paper. "Do not grieve."
"I will grieve," he said, and his voice cracked. "I will grieve for the rest of my life."
"Then make it count," she said, and smiled—a small, sad smile that he would carry in his memory for the rest of his life, which turned out to be three nights.
She died at dawn.
ACT III: THE FALL
King Aldric did not hate Edmund. Hatred would have been simpler. What he felt was something more complicated: suspicion, fear, the paranoia of an old man watching the son-in-law the people loved grow more powerful by the day.
The dismissal came on a Tuesday. Edmund was summoned to the royal council, dressed in the ceremonial robes of his office, prepared to argue the budget for the Eastern Marches. Instead, he heard himself told that his services were no longer required, that he should return to London immediately, that he was not to set foot in his province again.
"Your Majesty," Edmund said, bowing low, "I served Avalon for twenty years."
"And twenty years is a long time, Lord Edmund. Long enough to accumulate enemies. Long enough to make the King uneasy."
He was escorted from the palace by guards whose faces he had once known—men he had promoted, men he had fed and paid and treated as human beings. Now they looked at him with eyes that refused to meet his.
The journey back to London took three weeks. He travelled light—no retinue, no servants, only a single trunk containing Eleanor's letters and a miniature portrait she had had painted in their fifth year. He thought of her every hour. He thought of the hospital he had built, the roads he had laid, the children who had learned to read because of schools he had endowed. All of it would be undone. That was how these things worked in Avalon. Power was a tide, and the tide was going out.
When he reached London, he found himself standing in a city that felt both familiar and alien. The streets were the same. The smells were the same. But he was not the same man who had left it twenty years ago—either in the dream or in whatever reality had produced it.
He went to the only place that had offered him refuge in his sober life: St. Jude's Church, where the roof had long since collapsed and the fog rolled freely through the broken doors.
He sat on the flagstones. He opened his trunk. He took out Eleanor's letters and read them by the light of a single candle. And then the fever took him again.
ACT IV: THE ANTS
He woke on the flagstones of St. Jude's to the sound of rain and the smell of damp stone. The fog had lifted. Morning light filtered through the broken windows in pale, watery beams.
A man stood over him—Dr. Whitmore, his family physician, his face drawn with exhaustion and something that might have been relief.
"Edmund," the doctor said. "Thank God. You've been burning for three days. I thought—"
"How long?" Edmund croaked.
"Three days. You collapsed on Thursday. Today is Sunday. Do you know who you are?"
Edmund tried to speak. His mouth was full of dust and regret. "I am Edmund Ashworth. I was—"
"You were what?"
He looked around the ruined church. He looked at the doctor. He looked at his own hands—pale, trembling, the hands of a man who had not done manual labour in decades.
"I was Governor of North Ke," he said quietly. "I was Lord Protector of the Eastern Marches. I was married to Princess Eleanor of Avalon."
Dr. Whitmore exchanged a glance with the nurse standing in the doorway. He put a hand on Edmund's shoulder.
"Edmund," he said gently, "you have been very ill. You may still be unwell."
But Edmund was not listening. He was digging.
He dug with his bare hands into the damp earth beneath the altar where he had lain. He dug until his nails broke and his fingers bled. And then he found it: a hole in the ground, no larger than a fist, leading into the earth beneath the church.
He reached in. He pulled out a twig. He pulled out a stone. He pulled out a cluster of something small and white and hard.
Ants' eggs.
He stared at them in the palm of his hand. They were small, white, perfectly formed. And beyond them, in the walls of the tunnel he had opened, he could see the intricate architecture of the colony—tunnels and chambers and passages, laid out with a precision that made his head spin.
A kingdom. A whole kingdom, in the earth beneath a ruined church.
"Edmund." The doctor's voice was distant. "Edmund, please."
He looked up. He looked at the ants' eggs in his hand. And then he remembered his pocket.
He reached into the inside of his coat—the same coat he had been wearing three days ago, when he had collapsed in this very place. His fingers found a folded piece of paper. He pulled it out. It was a letter, written in his brother James's hand, dated from Bombay, dated three weeks before Edmund had collapsed.
He had forgotten he still carried it. He had never read it.
He broke the seal. The handwriting was shaky, the ink smudged as though by rain or tears.
"Brother," it began. "I write to you from a place that has no name on any map. We are fighting men here who fight like ants—small, desperate, and without hope. Every battle is the same. Every victory is the same. Every death is the same. I think of you sometimes, Edmund, and I wonder if you understand what it means to be trapped in a machine too large to see the edges of. I think you would understand. I think you always understood. Forgive me for writing to you from a war you would never have joined. Forgive me for writing at all. There is no one to receive this but you."
Edmund sat on the flagstones of St. Jude's Church and read the letter twice. Then he folded it carefully and put it back in his pocket.
He looked at the hole in the ground one more time. He looked at the morning light filtering through the broken windows. He looked at his brother's letter.
And then, very quietly, he began to laugh.
It was not a happy laugh. It was not a sane laugh. It was the laugh of a man who has seen the edges of his own machine and found them to be made of ants.
