The Oak Kingdom
ACT I: THE HEAT
The heat in Mississippi did not simply exist—it pressed. It sat on your chest like a heavy hand, it filled your mouth with the taste of dust and decay, it seeped through your clothes and into your skin until you could not tell where you ended and the world began. Beauregard Beaumont sat on the porch of Oak Manor, watching the sun sink below the cotton fields, feeling the fever build in his bones like a second heartbeat.
He had been a man once. Not a great man, not a small man, but a man—Beauregard "Bee" Beaumont, owner of Oak Manor, descendant of a family that had once been important, that had once mattered, that had once owned half the county and half the people in it. Now the manor was half-ruined, the county had moved on, and the people were gone—run off to Chicago or New Orleans or wherever people went when they wanted to escape the past.
The fever came on like a thief. One moment he was fine, sitting on the porch, drinking sweet tea that tasted like sugar and regret. The next moment the world was tilting, the colors were too bright, the sounds too loud, and the voice in his head was speaking in a language he did not recognize but somehow understood.
"Your Majesty."
He turned. A man stood in the doorway of the manor—no, not the manor, the palace. A man in a uniform he did not recognize, bowing low, his face serious, his eyes full of something that might have been reverence or might have been fear.
"Your Majesty," the man said again. "The council awaits."
Bee stood. His body felt different—stronger, straighter, as though the fever had burned away the weakness and left something harder in its place. He followed the man inside.
ACT II: THE KINGDOM
They called him King Bee, though the title was never formal, never written in any law book. It was a title earned through a mixture of charisma, violence, and sheer stubbornness. He had inherited the throne—or rather, he had inherited the manor, and the throne had grown out of the manor the way vines grow out of a fence, slowly, inevitably, until you could not tell where one ended and the other began.
His kingdom was small by most standards—a handful of towns, a few thousand people, a stretch of river that he controlled like a god controls the sea. But within those boundaries, Bee was absolute. He made the laws. He enforced the laws. He broke the laws when it suited him, and everyone knew it, and no one dared to challenge him.
He married Seraphina Delacroix in a ceremony that made the local newspapers—small papers, written by men who had never left the county, but they called it the wedding of the century, and Bee believed them, because he needed to believe them.
Seraphina was beautiful in the way that only women who have never left the South can be—her beauty was not polished or refined, it was raw and untamed, like the land itself. She could dance the Charleston, she could sew a button, she could look a man in the eye and make him feel both seen and unseen at the same time. She was, in every way, a woman worth ruling for.

ACT III: THE FALL
The end came on a Tuesday. Bee was sitting in his study, reviewing the latest reports from his "ministers"—the old men who had served his "father" and now served him, not out of loyalty but out of habit, out of fear, out of the simple understanding that resistance was pointless.
The door opened. A man walked in—Colonel Whitfield, his "prime minister," the man who had been with him since the beginning, the man who had whispered in his ear during every crisis, every celebration, every moment of doubt.
"Bee," Whitfield said, and his voice was different—softer, smaller, as though the power had finally begun to drain out of him. "You need to come to the council. Now."
When Bee arrived, the room was full of men he had known for years—men he had dined with, men he had trusted, men who were now looking at him with eyes that refused to meet his.
"The council has voted," Whitfield said. "Your reign is over. Effective immediately."
"I didn't do anything wrong," Bee said. His voice sounded strange to his own ears—weak, uncertain, as though the fever had burned away something essential.
"That's not the point," Whitfield said. "The point is that the world has moved on. And you have not."
He was escorted from the palace by guards whose faces he had once known—men he had promoted, men he had fed and paid and treated as human beings. Now they looked at him with eyes that spoke of something between pity and relief.
The journey back to Oak Manor took three hours. He travelled light—no retinue, no servants, only a single trunk containing his personal papers and a photograph of Seraphina from their wedding day, ten years before. He thought of her every mile. He thought of the kingdom he had built, the laws he had enacted, the people whose lives he had shaped through decisions made in rooms like the one he had just left. All of it would be undone. That was how these things worked in the South. Power was a tide, and the tide was going out.
When he reached the manor, he found himself standing on the porch where he had sat when the fever began. The sun was setting. The cotton fields were golden. The air smelled of dust and decay.
He sat down. He opened his trunk. He took out the photograph of Seraphina and looked at it by the light of a single candle. And then the fever took him again.
ACT IV: THE RUINS
He woke on the porch to the sound of cicadas and the smell of damp earth. The fever had broken. Morning light filtered through the trees in pale, watery beams.
A man stood over him—Dr. Pemberton, from New Orleans, his face drawn with exhaustion and something that might have been relief.
"Beauregard," the doctor said. "Thank God. You've been burning for three days. I thought—"
"How long?" Bee croaked.
"Three days. You collapsed on Thursday. Today is Sunday. Do you know who you are?"
Bee tried to speak. His mouth was full of dust and regret. "I am Beauregard Beaumont. I was—"
"You were what?"
He looked around the manor. He looked at the doctor. He looked at his own hands—pale, trembling, the hands of a man who had not done manual labour in decades.
"I was King of the Oak Kingdom," he said quietly. "I was ruler of this county. I was engaged to Seraphina Delacroix."
Dr. Pemberton exchanged a glance with the nurse standing in the doorway. He put a hand on Bee's shoulder.
"Beauregard," he said gently, "you have been very ill. You may still be unwell."
But Bee was not listening. He was looking at the manor.
The roof was gone. The walls were crumbling. The gates were broken. The cotton fields were overgrown with weeds. The slaves—no, the workers—they were gone. All of them. Gone.
He reached into the inside of his coat—the same coat he had been wearing three days ago, when he had collapsed on this very porch. His fingers found a folded piece of paper. He pulled it out. It was a letter from the bank, dated three weeks before Bee had collapsed.
He had forgotten he still carried it. He had never read it.
He broke the seal. The words were stark, the ink smudged as though by rain or tears.
"Mr. Beaumont, your mortgage is due. The bank has foreclosed on Oak Manor. Effective immediately. All assets are to be seized."
Bee sat on the porch of Oak Manor and read the letter twice. Then he folded it carefully and put it back in his pocket.
He looked at the ruins of the manor one more time. He looked at the morning light filtering through the trees. He looked at the letter in his hand.
And then, very quietly, he began to laugh.
It was not a happy laugh. It was not a sane laugh. It was the laugh of a man who has seen the edges of his own machine and found them to be made of ants.
A北方 reporter passing by stopped his car. He saw Bee sitting on the porch, laughing, and he got out to investigate.
"Sir," the reporter said. "Are you all right?"
Bee looked up. He looked at the reporter. He looked at the ruins of the manor behind him.
"Sir," he said, "you see ruins. I see the corpse of a dream. And the corpse of a dream is more real than any living lie."
The reporter did not know what to say. He got back in his car and drove away.
Bee stayed on the porch. He watched the sun rise. He listened to the cicadas. He thought of Seraphina. He thought of the kingdom. He thought of the fever.
And then, very quietly, he began to cry.
