THE LAST WALKING
The sea doesn't care about you. This is the first lesson any北海 fisherman learns, and it is the only lesson that matters. Henrik Varg learned it in 1958, when he was nineteen and stupid and convinced that the North Sea was something you could negotiate with, the way you negotiate with a stubborn cow or a difficult customer at the market. The sea doesn't negotiate. He'd learned this the hard way, on a night in November when the wind hit sixty knots and the waves hit the hull of his father's fishing boat with enough force to bend steel, and Henrik had been hanging onto a winch with one hand and praying with the other, his knuckles white, his boots sliding on wet deck, his stomach empty and his courage emptier. The boat named Agnes heeled hard to port. Everything not bolted to the deck slid toward the starboard side—including Henrik, who had just enough time to think that this was an undignified way to die, sliding across a fishing boat in his stocking feet—before he struck the bulkhead and bounced off and ended up on the deck, flat on his back, staring up at a sky that looked like it was made of black glass. And there, in the corner of his vision, a grey shape. A ball of fur, wedged between a coil of rope and a bucket, shivering so hard its teeth chattered. A kitten—no, not a kitten. A cat, small and wet and grey as the sky, clinging to the deck with the desperate grip of something that had decided, against all evidence, that it was going to survive this night. Henrik crawled toward it. The boat rocked. He grabbed the rope. He reached the cat and scooped it up against his chest, where it went rigid for a moment, then melted, going boneless as though its decision to survive had been confirmed and it could now afford to rest. He held it there for the rest of the night, through the worst of the storm, through the hours when the waves stopped hitting the hull and started hitting the sky, through the long, grey dawn when the wind dropped and the sea went quiet and Henrik realized he was still alive and so was the cat. "What are you doing here?" he whispered, and the cat blinked up at him with eyes the colour of old pennies and didn't answer, because cats don't answer questions and Henrik was already learning this. He named it Krig. War. Because the cat's eyes were the eyes of something that had survived a battle and wasn't sure whether to celebrate or mourn. -- The first decade was the wild one. Henrik and Krig together on the Agnes, out in the北海 from April to September, chasing herring and mackerel and cod through waters that were more blue than grey on good days and more grey than blue on bad ones. Henrik hauled nets until his hands were scar tissue over muscle over bone over nothing. Krig sat on the bow and watched the horizon with an expression that Henrik liked to think of as philosophical but which was probably just the expression of a cat who'd seen too many fish die to develop much empathy for them. They caught fish. They sold fish. They went home to a small house in a small fishing village on the Norwegian coast where Henrik's mother—his real mother, not the Agnes, though Henrik sometimes thought of the boat as his mother too—cooked fish and drank coffee and said nothing when Henrik brought Krig inside, because in fishing villages you don't question a cat's right to be indoors. You just make sure it doesn't sleep on your flour. Henrik married a woman named Ingrid in 1965. She was a teacher's assistant with blonde hair and a laugh that sounded like the Agnes coming in from a good day's catch—loud, unselfconscious, and full of something that made Henrik want to stand a little taller and fish a little harder and be the kind of man who deserved a woman who laughed like that. Krig approved of Ingrid. This was evident in the way he sat on her lap while she read in the evenings, purring with a contentment that Henrik had never seen him display for anyone else. Krig had chosen her, in the way cats choose, and Henrik accepted it. They had a son. Lars. Henrik held him for the first time in a hospital in Bergen, looking down at this small, red, crying creature and feeling something in his chest open up like a net full of fish breaching the surface of the water. Krig sat on the windowsill of the hospital room and watched them through the glass. Henrik found him there and picked him up and said, "This is my son." Krig blinked slowly. Henrik took it for: I see him. -- The wild years ended in 1978. Not with a storm or a disaster or any of the dramatic endings Henrik had convinced himself would be his fate. They ended with a phone call. His father, who had fished the北海 for forty years and knew every current and every reef and every trick the sea could play, had died in his sleep. Just stopped. One minute he was breathing. The next, he wasn't. Henrik took over the Agnes. He and Krig went out together one last time in the autumn of '78, and the sea was calm and the fish were plentiful and Henrik caught more than he'd ever caught in a single day, and he knew, as he stood on the deck pulling in net after net after net, that his father was in every fish, in every wave, in every gust of wind, in every shadow that Krig chased across the deck in the late afternoon light. He caught enough to last a lifetime. He sold it. He went home. He didn't go out the next day. The fishing ended not with a bang but with a letter from the European Union saying that the herring quota had been reduced by forty percent and the mackerel season was closed and the cod stocks were depleted and the北海 was no longer a place where you could make a living, it was a place where you could apply for subsidies. Henrik read the letter in the kitchen, with Krig on the table beside him, watching him with those penny eyes. He read it twice. He put it down. He made coffee. He drank it. He didn't cry. He'd learned that crying didn't help. The sea had taught him that. So had his father's death. So had everything else. He sold the Agnes. -- The oil was what came next. The北海 had fish, and when the fish were gone, there was oil. British Petroleum and Shell and Statoil, drilling into the seabed and sucking out the black blood of the earth, and Henrik—fifty years old, knees already shot from years of standing on a rocking deck, hands scarred from rope and net and fish scales that had hardened into something like armour—went to work on an oil platform. He stood on steel for twelve hours a day, seven days a week, watching drills bite into rock and black oil rise to the surface like something the earth had been keeping secret and was only now reluctantly sharing. Krig sat on the railing of the platform and watched him, wind whipping his grey fur, eyes fixed on Henrik with an expression that Henrik was starting to recognize as something close to affection. The platform was called Troll, then Draupner, then Brage. Each one was a world unto itself: steel towers rising out of black water, housing two hundred men who ate, slept, worked, drank, fought, and slept again in spaces that smelled of oil and sweat and the particular loneliness of men who spend their lives on metal structures in the middle of a sea that wants nothing from them. Krig was the only living thing on the platform that wasn't human. He sat on the railing in the mornings, on the catwalks at lunch, on the roof of the crew quarters at night, always watching, always present, always exactly where Henrik could see him when he looked up from his work and needed to see something that wasn't steel or water or sky. In 2001, Ingrid died. Cancer. Fast and brutal and unfair in the way that cancer is unfair—not because it's cruel but because it's indifferent. It doesn't care about blonde hair or laughter or thirty-five years of marriage. It just takes. Henrik sat at her bedside for three days, holding her hand, watching her breathe, watching the breathing slow, watching it stop. Krig sat on the chair beside the bed and watched Henrik. This was the first time Henrik had seen Krig do anything that could be called comforting—not rubbing against his leg or sitting on his lap or purring. Krig just sat. He watched. He was there. "Thank you," Henrik said, and Krig blinked slowly, and Henrik understood that thank you didn't mean what it usually means. It didn't mean gratitude. It meant: I witnessed this. I was here. This is what I do. -- The oil ran out. Not all of it—there's always more oil to be found, if you're willing to drill deeper and pay more and ignore the warnings of people who say the北海 is exhausted and should be left alone—but enough of it that the platforms started closing, one by one, like shops in a town whose economy had collapsed. The last platform Henrik worked on was called Gullfaks C. He was sixty-two. His knees were worse. His hands shook. The men around him were younger, faster, better educated, more willing to follow safety protocols that Henrik viewed as suggestions from people who'd never had to make a decision in three seconds that meant the difference between life and death. He worked Gullfaks C for two years. Then it was over. He collected his pension. He went home. Krig was older too. His grey fur had gone almost white. His movements were slower. He spent more time sleeping. But he still sat on the windowsill. He still watched the sea. He still blinked slowly when Henrik spoke to him, which had become, over forty-five years, their primary form of communication. "You and me," Henrik said, sitting in his armchair on an evening in 2015, watching the light fade over the北海. "We walked it all the way." Krig didn't answer. He couldn't. But he turned his head from the window, looked at Henrik, and blinked slowly. It was enough. -- Henrik was seventy when he sat on the bench by the sea for the last time. Not the last time he'd sit on a bench—he'd sit on many more benches, in parks and squares and the occasional bus stop, because seventy is an age where sitting becomes not a choice but a necessity. But this bench was by the sea, and the sea was the北海, and the北海 was where it had all begun and where it was all ending, which made it the right bench. Krig was seven years old by then. An eternity for a cat. His breathing was slow and shallow. His eyes were cloudy. He couldn't see well anymore. But he could hear Henrik, and he knew Henrik's voice, and he knew the way Henrik's hand felt when it rested on his head, and that was enough. Henrik took a piece of bread from his pocket. He broke off a small piece and put it on his knee. Krig sniffed it, ate it, and went back to sleep. Henrik looked at the sea. It was the same sea he'd fished in 1958. The same sea his father had fished in 1938. The same sea that had taken the fish and the oil and the Agnes and his father and Ingrid and forty years of his life, one wave at a time. It was still there. That was something. He looked down at Krig. The cat was sleeping, his old body warm against Henrik's leg, his white fur catching the last light of a November afternoon. Three stripes—faint now, barely visible in the white—ran down his back where they had been since the day Henrik found him on the deck of the Agnes, shivering but alive, choosing to survive. Henrik reached down and stroked Krig's head. The cat didn't wake, but he leaned into Henrik's hand, just slightly, the way he'd done since 1958, when he was small and wet and clinging to Henrik's chest while the北海 tried to kill them both. The sea breathed. The wind blew. The light faded. And on a bench by the北海, a man who had spent his life walking watched a cat who had spent his life walking beside him, and neither of them said anything, because they had said everything they needed to say in the language that mattered: presence. The last walking wasn't dramatic. It wasn't heroic. It was two old creatures, one fisherman and one cat, sitting on a bench and watching the sea go on being the sea, which it had always been and always would be, indifferent and magnificent and alive. Henrik closed his eyes. Krig slept. The北海 breathed. And that was the story. ---
