The body in the river had webbed fingers.

That was the first thing Jack Morloy noticed when the打捞 crew hauled it onto the muddy bank. The second thing was the gills—three neat slits on each side of the neck, like someone had taken a knife and carefully carved them open. The third thing was that the dead man was smiling.

"Rare congenital deformity," the coroner said, stamping the death certificate with a flourish that suggested he had said this exact sentence many times before and expected it to be accepted without question.

Jack didn't correct him. He just took the paper, folded it in half, and put it in his coat pocket next to the business card that read: FRANK "THE BIG FINGERS" KOVACH—IMPORT/EXPORT.

He was already planning his next move.

Frank's office was above a Chinese restaurant on South State Street. The smell of garlic and fried dough rose through the floorboards, and the neon sign from the bar across the street blinked through the blinds in a slow, hypnotic rhythm. Red. Red. Red.

Frank was forty-five, wide through the chest, and wore his hair slicked back with enough pomade to waterproof a small boat. He sat behind a desk that cost more than most of his employees made in a year.

"Your guy's gonna find my brother," Frank said. It wasn't a request.

"I'm gonna look into it," Jack corrected. "There's a difference."

"There isn't. I pay you, you look. You find, I pay more. You don't, I pay less. Simple."

Jack lit a cigarette. The smoke curled up toward the water-stained ceiling tiles. "Where was your brother last seen?"

"At the clinic on Gene Street. Three weeks ago."

Jack knew the place. Everyone in Chicago who needed something the regular world couldn't provide knew the place. The sign above the door said DR. VARGAS—MEDICAL CONSULTATIONS in letters that had once been gold and were now the colour of dried blood.

"What did he go in for?" Jack asked.

Frank leaned back. His chair creaked. "He needed a job. Deep water work. Sunk ships, river cleanup. Regular guys can't stay down past four minutes. My brother could hold his breath for ten. Doctor made him something special."

"Aquatic enhancement," Jack said.

"Call it what you want. He went in a man. He came back... something else. And then he disappeared."

Jack finished his cigarette and stubbed it out. "I'll charge you five hundred to start. Five hundred more if I find him alive. Ten if he's dead."

Frank counted out the bills. His fingers were thick and scarred. "One more thing, Morloy. If my brother came back wrong—if he's dangerous now—I don't want him back. I want to know what he became."

Jack took the money. "That'll be extra."

Gene Street was named after a man who had died in the 1890s and nobody could remember why. The street itself ran alongside a tributary of the Chicago River that nobody called a river. It was more of a sewer with a name. The buildings on either side were old brick, their windows boarded or broken, their doorways shadowed even at midday.

Dr. Vargas's clinic occupied the second floor of a building that had once been a butcher shop. The smell of formaldehyde had not quite masked the older smell of blood and fat that had soaked into the bricks.

Jack went up the stairs alone. The staircase groaned under his weight. On the landing, a sign read: DR. VARGAS—BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.

He knocked.

"Come in," said a voice that sounded like gravel in a tin can.

The office was small and clean. Too clean for this part of town. White tiles on the walls, a steel desk, a single chair for visitors. Behind the desk sat a man who looked like he had been assembled from the wrong parts of different bodies. His face was too long, his nose too sharp, his eyes too bright. He wore a white coat that was genuinely white, which in itself was suspicious.

"Mr. Morloy," the doctor said. He did not ask how he knew Jack's name. "Frank's man."

"That's right."

"You're asking about his brother."

"I am."

The doctor steepled his fingers. His nails were long and yellowed. "Did he tell you what my procedure does?"

"He said it made my guy hold his breath longer."

The doctor smiled. It was not a nice smile. "Mr. Morloy, do you know how much it costs to build a ship in this river?"

Jack shook his head.

"Two hundred thousand dollars. In materials alone. And when it sinks—and ships always sink eventually—you need men who can go down and salvage what's worth saving. Regular men can't go past forty feet without risking the bends. My clients need men who can go to two hundred. Who can work underwater for eight hours. Who don't need to come up for air."

"You're making aquatic workers."

"I'm solving a problem."

Jack studied the doctor's face. "How many have you made?"

The doctor's smile widened. "That's a question you shouldn't be asking, Mr. Morloy."

Jack stood up. "I'm a detective. Asking questions is what I do."

"Then here's an answer for you: stop asking the wrong ones."

Jack found Number Seven on the fourth night.

He had been following the clinic's supply deliveries—large metal drums marked with hazard symbols that nobody could identify. The deliveries came at night, driven by a mute man with no face. Jack followed one truck to an abandoned warehouse on the south side of the river.

The warehouse was locked. Jack picked the lock. Inside, he found a row of cylindrical tanks, each eight feet tall and filled with a cloudy yellow fluid. Six of them were empty. The seventh contained a figure suspended in the fluid, its eyes closed, its chest rising and falling slowly.

It had the rough shape of a human. But its skin was leathery and thick, its fingers webbed, its nostrils slit like a fish's. It was maybe six feet tall, maybe two hundred pounds. It was, Jack thought, the most ugly thing he had ever seen.

And then its eyes opened.

They were brown. Human brown. The kind of brown that made you think of autumn leaves and warm coffee and your grandmother's kitchen. The kind of brown that had no business being on a face like that.

It pressed its webbed hand against the glass.

Jack took out his notebook and held it up. CAN YOU READ?

The thing's eyes widened. It raised its other hand and, with a webbed finger, began to write condensation on the glass.

THEY KILLED NUMBER THREE.

Jack stared. "What happened to Number Three?"

The thing wrote: DISSOLVED. ACID. DO NOT TRUST FRANK.

"Who are you?" Jack wrote on his pad.

The thing paused. Then it wrote: SEVEN.

Jack's phone rang. He jumped. It was Frank.

"Morloy. You find him?"

Jack looked at Number Seven. Number Seven looked at him.

"Yeah," Jack said. "I found him."

The escape happened at midnight. Rain was falling—the kind of steady, cold rain that made everything feel hopeless.

Jack had spent the previous three days building a map of the warehouse. He knew where the guards patrolled, where the cameras were blind, where the drainage pipe led outside. He knew that Number Seven could fit through a gap that no human could—the thing's joints bent in ways that made Jack's head ache just watching it.

He also knew that Frank had people everywhere.

He got Number Seven out of the tank using a wrench and a bottle of something the doctor had left on a shelf labeled NEUTRALIZER. The fluid drained slowly, and Number Seven slumped against the tank, gasping. It was learning to breathe air. It was going to be difficult.

"Can you write?" Jack whispered.

Seven nodded. It picked up a piece of chalk from the floor and wrote on the concrete: WATER IS MY FRIEND.

"Then let's use that friend," Jack said.

They moved through the warehouse like shadows. Jack led. Seven followed, moving with an awkward, undulating gait that was almost human if you didn't look too closely. They reached the back door. Jack opened it. Rain hit them like a wall.

They were twenty feet from the alley when the floodlights came on.

"Going somewhere, Morloy?" Frank's voice echoed across the yard. Three men stood by their cars, silhouetted against the light. Guns in their hands.

Jack pushed Seven behind a stack of pallets. "Stay down."

He stepped out from cover, hands raised. "Frank, it's just a guy. Not a weapon."

Frank laughed. It was the kind of laugh that had preceded violence for twenty years. "Just a guy? Morloy, you're dumber than you look."

He raised his gun.

Something moved behind the pallets. Something fast and wet and wrong. Seven launched itself over the pallets like a frog—crouched, then sprang, landing in a crouch ten feet from Frank.

The gun went off. The bullet hit Seven in the shoulder. It didn't seem to hurt. It didn't seem to notice.

Seven looked at Frank. Then it looked at the river. Then it jumped.

It hit the water with a splash that was almost graceful. And then it was gone—underneath, moving fast, leaving only ripples on the dark surface.

Frank lowered his gun. "Christ. What the hell was that?"

Jack didn't answer. He was already running toward the river's edge. He looked at the water. Nothing. Just the slow, indifferent flow of the Chicago River, carrying everything downstream.

He turned to Frank. "You wanted to know what your brother became?"

"What?"

"He became free."

Jack walked back to his car. He got in. He drove away. He did not look in the rearview mirror.

A month later, Jack sat in a bar on North State Street and read the newspaper.

The front page headline read: UNIDENTIFIED CREATURES SPOTTED IN CHICAGO RIVER. The article described "several large aquatic animals" that had "assisted workers in salvaging three sunken vessels from the river bottom before disappearing."

The newspaper called them a "mystery." Jack called them what they were: the beginning of something.

He finished his whiskey. He took out the check Frank had given him—five hundred dollars, plus five hundred for finding Number Seven—and tore it in half.

Then he opened his drawer and took out a map of the United States. He ran his finger down the East Coast, past New York, past Boston, past the Maine coast. He stopped at the mouth of the Mississippi.

He drew a circle around it.

Then he ordered another whiskey and waited for the rain to stop.
