THE SHADOW OF TIDE AND CHEESE
The tide had taken him by the ankles first, then the knees, then all of Thomas Whittaker's composure. He knelt in the salt-crusted shingle of the Yorkshire coast, his hands closed around something that was no longer warm. The sea had swollen it beyond recognition—grey fur matted withweed and silt, the bones crushed flat by three days of North Sea rage. But Thomas knew it was Three. He knew it from the three white rings behind its neck, still visible even now, like a medal the ocean had forgotten to return. He set the body down on the sand, poured two fingers of whisky from the flask at his belt onto the stones, and sat back on his heels. The wind came off the water cold enough to split lips. In the evenings Thomas poured two glasses of whisky—one for him, one for the floor near Three's paws, where it soaked in and went to waste. Three never drank whisky. He only sat and watched Thomas drink it, with that same slow blink that said: I am here. That's enough. Margaret came to the shop on Thursdays. She'd moved into the cottage past the mill two years after her husband died, and though she was six years younger than Thomas and had every right to want someone else, she never tried. Three walked to the floor, sat, and looked at the whisky saucer. It was empty. Thomas felt a heat rise in his chest he couldn't name. He poured. Three didn't drink it. Instead, he lifted his right forepaw, placed it on the table, and pushed something toward Thomas with the flat of his toes. It was a piece of paper. Wet, torn, stained with blood that wasn't Three's—Thomas knew that now, because the smell was wrong, copper-sharp, human. He unfolded it carefully. It was a chart. Thomas stood before three men in dark coats who asked him questions in voices that tried to sound casual and failed. He showed them the chart. They leaned forward. One of them—a thin man with a pencil mustache—put his hand on the paper and said something Thomas couldn't catch. They took the chart. They gave Thomas a shilling and told him to go home and make cheese. Three was waiting at the cottage when he returned. He'd heard the news, somehow—Thomas liked to think so, though he knew better. Cats don't hear parliamentary inquiries. Cats don't understand that a cheese-maker from Yorkshire has suddenly become a minor national security asset. Cats only understand routine, and routine had not changed: Thomas came home at dusk, Three was on the windowsill, there was a saucer on the floor. But something had changed. Thomas saw it the moment he opened the door. Three's posture was different—straighter, harder, as though the cat had carried something back from London that sat between his shoulder blades like a blade. Thomas didn't know who "they" was. He didn't ask. He buried him on the headland where the cottage overlooked the sea. Not in the churchyard—he'd checked, and the vicar would have wanted an explanation Thomas couldn't give. Instead, he dug a hole between two gorse bushes, lower than he would have liked, because the ground was rock-hard and his spade kept striking stone. When he was done, he marked the grave with a flat piece of driftwood and wrote on it in letters that leaned the way his face did: THREE. HE CHOSE. -- Two years later, Margaret married a merchant from Whitby—a widower with three sons and a warehouse full of salted cod. Thomas bought her a wheel of Cheshire for the wedding. She cried when he gave it to her. He didn't. He kept the cottage. He kept the cheese shop. He kept pouring two glasses of whisky every night—one for him, one on the floor where Three had sat. On quiet evenings, when the fog rolled in off the moor and the sea sounded like breathing, Thomas would sit by the fire and talk to the empty corner where Three used to sleep. He told the cat about the cheese—the new recipe he was developing, a hard cheese aged in apple wood smoke. He told him about Margaret's son who'd come to visit and asked if the long-faced cheese-maker was his father. He told him about the letter from London that arrived sometimes, in a hand he didn't recognize, with one line: ALL WELL. COME BACK IF YOU CAN. Thomas would finish his whisky and pour the second glass onto the floor. "Can't come back," he'd say to the dark corner. "I'm already here." And the wind would come off the sea, rattling the windowpanes, and Thomas would swear—just for a moment, just long enough to pour another glass—that he heard something like a blink in the sound. Slow. Deliberate. Enough. ---
