CHAPTER THREE: VIOLET — JULY 1925

She decided, in the space of a heartbeat, that she did not care which he was.

By July, they were meeting in the garden every Tuesday evening, when Violet's father attended the Oddfellows lodge meeting on the High Road and did not return until after ten. Violet brought Arthur through the side gate, the one that opened onto the alley behind the row of shops, and they sat on the bench she had dragged from the coal shed — a piece of garden furniture from before the war, its green paint peeling — and they talked. About the war, which Arthur did not like to discuss but did anyway, in fragments, the way a man might hand over pieces of a broken machine he could not bear to assemble himself. About Violet's mother, and the silence in the house since her death. About the wireless sets Arthur repaired and the novels Violet read and the improbable, unspoken possibility that their lives might somehow converge.

CHAPTER FOUR: KAREN — AUGUST 1975

Brambles had swallowed the path. Ivy had climbed the walls of the coal shed and was threatening to pull the roof down. A buddleia as tall as a small tree had established itself in what might once have been a flower bed, its purple cones swaying with butterflies.

She fetched the kitchen scissors from the drawer by the sink and began to cut her way through. The scissors were inadequate, the brambles fought back, and within ten minutes Karen's arms were scratched and bleeding and she had advanced perhaps four feet. But she had also discovered something: beneath the brambles, beneath the ivy, beneath the buddleia that had no right to be there, there were traces of order. A brick path. A stone bench. A rose bush.

The rose bush was in the far corner, behind the coal shed. It was ancient — the main stem was as thick as Karen's wrist — and it had been almost swallowed by ivy, but it was alive. That was when she found the box. It was buried perhaps six inches beneath the surface, at the base of the rose, where the main root branched. A tin box, rusted but intact, the kind that biscuits came in — Huntley and Palmers, the lettering still faintly visible under the rust. Karen dug it out with her fingers and sat on the stone bench — the same bench, she would learn later, where her grandmother had kissed a man fifty years ago — and opened the lid.

Inside were letters. Dozens of them, wrapped in oilcloth, tied with a ribbon that had once been blue and was now the colour of dishwater. Violet never knew how — perhaps a neighbour had seen Arthur coming through the side gate, perhaps Arthur himself had said something to the wrong person in the pub on Ley Street, perhaps the Oddfellows lodge meeting had been cancelled and her father had come home early and heard voices in the garden. Whatever the mechanism, the result was the same: on the third Saturday of October, Violet's father summoned her to the front parlour and informed her that she would not be seeing Mr. Webb again.

"He is not suitable," her father said. He was standing with his back to the fireplace, the way he stood when he was about to deliver a lecture on the importance of dental hygiene to a patient who had not been flossing. "He is damaged. He has no prospects. He is not even from Essex."

"He is a good man," Violet said. "He fought for his country."

The money from the sale was enough to live on, modestly, for the rest of her life.

She never remarried. She never even considered it. The men who had returned from the second war were young enough to be her sons, and the men her own age were either married or dead or had been damaged by the first war in ways that reminded her too much of Arthur. She did not need a husband. She had a daughter, and a granddaughter, and a garden, and a box of letters buried beneath a rose bush, and that was enough. It had to be enough.

The letter from the solicitor explained that the entire row of houses on Cranbrook Road was being acquired for a new development — six-storey blocks of flats, modern amenities, underground parking. Karen read the offer letter at the kitchen table. She read it twice. She thought about the house, and the garden, and the rose bush, and the tin box that now sat on the mantelpiece in her flat in Romford, cleaned of rust and filled with letters she had read so many times she could recite them from memory. She thought about her grandmother, who had kept the garden for fifty years. Who had kept the letters for fifty years. Who had kept a promise to a dead man for fifty years, without anyone knowing, without anyone thanking her, without anyone even noticing.

She thought about what "development" meant. It meant bulldozers. It meant concrete. It meant the destruction of everything her grandmother had built and maintained and protected. The rose bush. It cost her nearly everything she had. It was the most impractical, irrational, financially reckless decision she had ever made.

She moved into the house at forty-seven Cranbrook Road in November 1975. She cleared the garden — properly this time, with proper tools, with a book from the library about rose cultivation, with the patience her grandmother had taught her without ever saying a word. She planted new roses alongside the old one. She repainted the bench — green, the same green her grandmother had chosen in 1938, the colour of the dress Violet had worn the day she met Arthur Webb in the Ilford Public Library.

And every June, when the roses bloomed — the old bush and the new — Karen sat on the bench and talked to a grandmother she had never really known, and a great-grandfather she would never meet, and a future that had, against all odds, preserved the past.
