The Plaza Hotel smelled of lilies and money, which to Claire Johnson was the same thing: both expensive, both temporary, both leaving you feeling hollow when they were gone.

She stood at the edge of the ballroom, her sequined dress catching the light every time she shifted her weight, and tried to remember the lyrics to the song she was about to perform. Her hands were shaking. Not from nerves—from anger. She had agreed to sing at this charity gala because her cousin Etta worked for the Sterling family and had begged her, and because the fifty dollars they were offering would pay for Marcus's schoolbooks for the entire year. But standing here, surrounded by women in furs and men in tuxedos who were discussing stock prices the way other people discussed the weather, she felt the familiar tightening in her chest, the one that came whenever she remembered that God had given her a voice and the world had told her what to do with it.

The band struck up the opening chords of "Stormy Weather." Claire closed her eyes, breathed in, and opened her mouth.

What came out was not Kalle Lee's version. It was something darker, slower, with a growl in it that made the front-row women stop mid-sip and the men stop mid-conversation. She sang about rain and heartbreak and a man who left her standing on a platform with nothing but a ticket to nowhere, and when she hit the high note at the bridge—the one that made her ribs vibrate and her vision blur—she felt something break inside her, something she had been holding together with willpower and hairpins for twenty-three years.

When she finished, there was a moment of silence, and then the room erupted.

Claire smiled the smile she had practiced in the mirror, nodded to the people clapping, and went backstage to change.

Victoria Sterling was hiding in the powder room on the second floor because her mother had made her stand by the door for forty-five minutes, smiling at people she did not want to smile at, shaking hands she did not want to shake, and she was tired of performing the role of the dutiful daughter the way Claire was tired of performing the role of the entertainment.

She leaned against the marble sink and stared at her reflection. Twenty-one years old, brown hair pinned up in a style that cost more than most people's monthly rent, eyes the color of weak tea. She looked like what she was: a product. Carefully manufactured, carefully displayed, ready for purchase by the right buyer.

The door opened. Claire walked in, still in her performance dress, her cheeks flushed from the applause, her eyes bright with the afterglow of a song that had meant something.

They looked at each other.

Claire went first. "Excuse me?"

Victoria: "Sorry. I was just—"

They both stopped. Claire tilted her head. Victoria tilted her head. Claire took a step closer. Victoria took a step back.

"Wow," Claire said.

"Wow," Victoria agreed.

It was not a perfect resemblance. Claire's features were sharper, her skin a shade darker, her mouth set in a line of quiet defiance that Victoria's had never learned. But in the powder room's soft light, with Victoria's hair down and Claire's powdered just so, they could have been sisters. Twins, even, if someone had taken one and raised her in a brownstone on 135th Street and the other in a mansion on Brooklyn Heights and told them they were different kinds of human beings.

"I'm Victoria," she said.

"Claire."

"Claire who?"

"Claire Johnson."

Victoria's eyes widened slightly. "Johnson? Like the Johnson who—"

"My grandmother. She used to sing at the Apollo before it was cool."

Victoria laughed. It was a real laugh, not the practiced one she used at galas, and it surprised both of them.

"Do you want to see something?" Claire asked.

"Do I?"

Claire reached into her clutch and pulled out a compact mirror. She held it up. Victoria leaned in. Side by side, reflected in the silvered glass, they looked almost identical.

"How old are you?" Victoria asked.

"Twenty-three. You?"

"Twenty-one. Where do you live?"

"Harlem. 135th and Seventh. You?"

"Brooklyn Heights. The Sterling house." Victoria said it without pride, the way you might say "I was born in a hospital" or "I have a scar on my knee."

Claire's eyebrows rose. "Sterling? Like the railroad Sterling?"

"The very same."

They stood there for a long moment, looking at themselves in the compact, two girls who had been given the same face and different instructions for how to use it.

"You know," Claire said finally, "I've always wanted to see what it's like on the other side of town."

Victoria felt something shift inside her, a small stone dropping into a well. "And I've always wanted to see what it's like on this side."

The deal was simple: one day. Twenty-four hours. Claire would attend a society luncheon at the Sterling mansion in Victoria's place, and Victoria would spend the afternoon in Harlem, visiting Claire's apartment and experiencing what Claire called "the real world."

They met at a bus stop on Lexington Avenue at noon, each wearing clothes the other had packed for her. Claire in a tailored navy dress and pearl earrings, Victoria in a simple black skirt and a sweater that smelled like laundry detergent and home.

"You sure about this?" Claire asked, watching Victoria adjust the collar of her sweater. "Once we do this, there's no going back to how things were before."

"I'm sure," Victoria said. And she meant it.

The luncheon was everything Claire had expected and nothing she had imagined. The women at the table spoke about millinery and marriage prospects and the upcoming debutante season with the same intensity that Claire discussed chord changes and vocal technique. Claire listened, nodded, and tried not to laugh when Mrs. Sterling—Victoria's mother, a woman with silver hair and eyes like flint—began outlining Claire's "schedule" for the next six months: piano lessons (advanced), French tutoring (daily), charity galas (all of them), and a wedding date (within the month).

Claire felt Victoria's absence like a physical thing. She was sitting across from her, wearing her face, living her life, and for the first time in her life, Victoria was invisible. Nobody was asking her to perform. Nobody was using her. She was just a girl in a sweater, sitting at a bus stop, waiting to go home.

Which was exactly what Victoria wanted.

Harlem was loud. That was the first thing Victoria noticed. The city was always loud, but Harlem had a different kind of loud—it was the sound of people who had decided to make noise anyway. Cars honking, music spilling out of doorways, voices overlapping in a conversation that Victoria couldn't hear but could feel in her chest.

Grandma Johnson opened the door wearing a housecoat and a expression that ranged from suspicion to cautious curiosity. "Can I help you?"

"I'm looking for Claire Johnson," Victoria said. "I'm a friend."

Grandma Johnson studied her for a long moment, then looked past her at the street, then back at her face. "Come in. Take off your shoes at the door."

The apartment was small—two rooms and a kitchen—but it was warm. There were books on the shelf, a piano in the corner (slightly out of tune), and the smell of collard greens and cornbread that made Victoria's stomach growl despite herself.

Marcus, Claire's twelve-year-old brother, came home from school and stared at Victoria with the open-eyed wonder of a child who had never met anyone who looked like his sister but didn't act like her.

"Who's this, Claire?" he asked.

"This is Victoria," Claire said, using Victoria's voice, wearing Victoria's face. "She's my friend."

Marcus nodded slowly, then looked at Victoria. "You sound different."

Victoria smiled. "I feel different."

That evening, Victoria sat at the small kitchen table while Grandma Johnson told her stories about Claire's mother, a woman who had sang in the church choir and dreamed of recording an album and had died of pneumonia when Claire was nineteen. Victoria listened and felt something crack open in her chest, something she had been holding shut since she was old enough to understand that her mother loved her in the way she knew how, which was not the way Victoria needed.

Before she left, Victoria took out her wallet and placed three hundred dollars on the table. "For Marcus's schoolbooks," she said. "And for Grandma's medicine."

Grandma Johnson's eyes filled with tears, but she did not cry. She reached across the table and took Victoria's hand in hers, a gesture so simple and so powerful that Victoria almost broke right there at the kitchen table.

"Thank you," Grandma Johnson said.

Victoria shook her head. "Thank you for letting me sit at your table."

They met again at a diner on 42nd Street at midnight, each of them carrying the weight of what they had seen.

"Well?" Victoria asked.

Claire leaned back in her booth and exhaled slowly. "They're trapped, Victoria. All of them. Your mother, your father, the women at the luncheon—they're all trapped in a house made of rules, and they're all pretending it's a palace."

Victoria nodded. "And your family?"

"Mine's trapped too. Just in a different way. We're trapped by not having anything, and you're trapped by having too much of the wrong things." Claire paused. "But here's the thing, Victoria. We just swapped for one day. What if we swapped for real? Not your life for mine—ours together. I use your voice to speak truth at these galas. You use my voice to sing for people who need to hear it. We build something that's bigger than either of us."

Victoria felt the words settle inside her like a key turning in a lock. "What would we build?"

"A school," Claire said. "For kids who can't afford lessons. For kids who have voices but nobody to listen to them. We call it the Mirror Exchange, because that's what this is—two girls looking at each other and seeing not what's different, but what's the same. And then doing something about it."

Victoria reached across the table and took Claire's hand. It was the first time either of them had initiated physical contact, and it felt natural, like two hands finding each other in the dark.

"My mother won't agree to this," Victoria said.

"Then we don't ask her," Claire said. "We tell her."

Six months later, the Sterling-Johnson School of Music for Underprivileged Youth held its inaugural recital in a converted brownstone on 135th Street. The room was small, the chairs were borrowed, and the piano was slightly out of tune, but the audience was full.

Claire stood at the microphone and sang a song she had written about two girls who looked at each other in a mirror and decided to change the world. Victoria watched from the back row, tears streaming down her face, and when Claire finished, she did not clap. She simply raised her hand, palm open, in a gesture that said: I see you. I hear you. You are not alone.

After the recital, a young boy approached Victoria, no older than ten, with a voice like honey and eyes like stars. "Miss Sterling? Claire says you used to live in a big house. Is it true you had a piano in every room?"

Victoria knelt down to his level and smiled. "I had one piano in one room. And it was the most beautiful thing I ever owned. But it was lonely. Do you know what's not lonely?"

The boy shook his head.

"This," Victoria said, gesturing to the room full of children with instruments and sheet music and dreams. "This is not lonely."

The boy smiled. It was a small smile, but it was real, and it was his, and Victoria knew, with absolute certainty, that she had finally found the right side of town.
