The Investment Test
Act I
New York in 1922 was a city that had discovered it was beautiful and had not yet learned what to do with that discovery. The skyscrapers went up like prayers made of steel and glass. The jazz played from every doorway. Young men in white suits walked as though the pavement were a dance floor and the world owed them an entrance. Thomas Brennan walked differently.
Thomas had learned to walk differently in the Argonne forest, in the mud and the mustard gas and the long cold nights when you counted the living and the dead and tried to understand which number you wanted to be. He came back to a country that threw confetti and then threw him away, like a wrapping paper unwrapped and discarded. He was twenty-six, missing part of a lung, and he had developed a habit of waking up in places that were not beds.
He had a room in a boarding house in Harlem that smelled of boiled cabbage and other people's problems. He worked occasional shifts loading cargo at the docks when he could find them, which was often not. He had developed the art of disappearing into a city of six million people so completely that sometimes he felt like he had never existed at all.
Then Mr. Harrington found him.
It was not dramatic. Mr. Harrington was sitting on a bench in Central Park, feeding pigeons with the unhurried rhythm of a man who had never hurried about anything in his life. Thomas was sitting on the other end of the same bench, not feeding the pigeons because he had no bread, just sitting because movement required purpose and he had none to spare.
Mr. Harrington was a small man with large eyes and a suit that fit so perfectly it might have been painted on. He looked at Thomas the way a mathematician looks at an interesting equation -- not with sympathy, but with the attentive curiosity one gives to a problem worth solving.
You are Thomas Brennan, he said.
Thomas nodded. In his experience, confirmation was safer than denial. Denial invited questions. Confirmation ended conversations quickly.
I know your father, Mr. Harrington said. He was a good man. He would be ashamed of this.
Thomas looked at his hands. They were dockworker hands now -- scarred, calloused, the knuckles swollen from years of gripping ropes and crates. His father had been a schoolteacher. His father's hands had held chalk and children's fingers and never once touched cargo.
My father is dead, Thomas said.
Yes. So he is. Mr. Harrington set down his bread basket. I am proposing something to you, Thomas. It may seem unusual. It probably is unusual. But I have done unusual things my entire life, and this may be the most interesting one yet.
What is it?
I want you to survive.
Thomas stared at him. For a moment he thought this was some kind of joke, the kind of cruel game wealthy men played when they had nothing better to do. But Mr. Harrington's face was perfectly serious, which was somehow worse.
Survive what?
Survive yourself. Survive the war. Survive the version of you that believes he is done being useful. I have a property -- about two hundred acres in Connecticut. It is self-sufficient. We grow food, make things, solve problems. I want you to spend one year there. Earn your keep. Learn what it means to build rather than destroy.
Why me?
Because you are the most broken thing I have ever seen, and I believe broken things can be remade into something better. Also, I am curious to see if you will fail.
Thomas laughed. It was a rusty sound, like a gate opening after years of neglect. You want to test me.
I want to invest in you, Mr. Harrington corrected. The return may be substantial. Or it may be nothing. That is the nature of investment.
Act II
The Connecticut property was called Birchwood. It was not beautiful -- that was the first thing Thomas noticed. It was functional, practical, built by hands that cared more about durability than dignity. The buildings were made of wood and stone. The fields were arranged in neat geometric patterns. There was no music, no jazz, no laughter. There was work.
A dozen people lived there. Some were there voluntarily. Some, Thomas suspected, were there for reasons they did not discuss. There was a carpenter named O'Brien who could build anything from nothing. A woman named Rose who ran the kitchen and the garden with equal authority. He was being remade. Not by Mr. Harrington's design, exactly, but by the accumulated weight of small, purposeful lives intersecting with his own.
Act III
The crisis came in September, when Thomas received a letter from the boarding house. The landlord was evicting him -- not for nonpayment (he had been sending what he could), but because the building was being sold and the new owner wanted it vacant. Thomas had thirty days to find a new place, or his few belongings would be on the curb.
He sat on the edge of his cot and read the letter three times. Then he folded it carefully and put it in his pocket. That night, he did not sleep.
The old patterns rose like floodwater. You are nobody, they whispered. You always have been. Birchwood is a fantasy. Tomorrow you will be on the street again, and Mr. Harrington's little experiment will be proven worthless.
He went to Mr. Harrington's house at midnight. The old Thomas would have begged. He would have asked for money, for a job, for any extension of the kindness he felt he deserved.
The new Thomas asked a different question.
Why are you doing this?
Mr. Harrington was in his study, reading by lamplight. He did not look surprised to see Thomas.
Why am I doing what?
This. All of it. Birchwood. The year. The test.
Mr. Harrington set down his book. You mean, why am I testing you?
Yes.
Because I believe that worthiness is not inherited. It is earned. Every day. I cannot stop asking, Mr. Harrington said quietly. But I can stop imposing my answer. You have one year. At the end of that year, I will tell you what I believe about your worth. And you may agree or disagree. That is the only power I claim.
Thomas left the study and walked through the dark property. The fields were still. The buildings stood like quiet witnesses. He realized, with a shock that was almost physical, that he did not want to leave. Not because he needed protection, but because for the first time in two years, he felt like he was becoming someone worth becoming.
He returned to his duties. He woke at five. He worked the fields. He learned carpentry. He listened to Rose's humming and O'Brien's silence and David's laughter.
