The Double Shift

The rain in New York doesn't wash anything clean. It just makes the grime slicker, turns the sidewalks into black mirrors where you can see your reflection distorted and running late.

Ruth Kowalski sat in her '42 Ford at a red light on Broadway, one hand on the wheel, the other holding a cup of coffee that had gone cold three blocks ago. She was twenty-five, Polish-American from Queens, and she had been driving a taxi for eleven months, ever since the auto plant let her brother Tommy and three dozen other guys because "production adjustments." Tommy had taken it like a man—pocketed his severance, started job hunting, stopped talking about the union for about two weeks before starting to talk about it again. Ruth had taken it like Ruth: bought a used Ford, got her medallion through a cousin who knew a dispatcher who owed her father a favor, and started driving.

The light turned green. Ruth pressed the gas and kept moving. She had a fare waiting at La Guardia.

The woman who flagged her down at Terminal 4 was wrapped in a fur coat that probably cost more than Ruth's monthly rent. She was pale, dark-haired, with features that Ruth would later describe as "all right, nothing special, but in the right light, maybe."

"Address, miss?" Ruth asked, reaching for the meter.

The woman gave an address in Eastchester. Ruth put it in the GPS and started driving.

Halfway through the Bronx, the woman's phone rang. She answered it and spoke in a low, urgent voice that Ruth caught fragments of: "...contingency plan... if the merger falls through... make sure she doesn't..."

Ruth kept her eyes on the road. She had learned not to get involved. Three months ago, she had seen something at the docks that had put a target on her back, and she was still looking over her shoulder. The rule was simple: hear nothing, see nothing, drive the fare, collect the fare, go home.

But the woman's voice was shaking, and Ruth knew what shaking sounded like. She had heard it in her mother's voice the night the rent collector came for the third time. She had heard it in Tommy's voice the night the plant closed. Shaking was the sound of someone who knew something was coming and couldn't stop it.

They reached Eastchester in twenty minutes. The woman paid with a bill that was too large and didn't ask for change.

"Keep it," she said. "And forget what you heard."

Ruth watched her walk up the steps of a house that had more columns than the local library. She thought about the contingency plan. She thought about the shaking voice. She thought about O'Malley, the detective who had been circling her block for two weeks, and she decided that "forgetting" was probably the smart thing to do.

She was wrong about that. Forgetting was not an option. Not for either of them.

The next morning, Ruth was filling the taxi with gas when a black Cadillac pulled up beside hers. The window rolled down and she saw the woman from last night—Elizabeth Hartman, the name tag on the house had said—sitting behind the wheel, looking at Ruth with an expression that was equal parts calculation and desperation.

"Get in," Elizabeth said.

Ruth didn't move. "I got a fare to pick up."

"Cancel it."

"I don't cancel fares."

"Ruth," Elizabeth said, and the way she said it—like she knew Ruth's name, like she had been waiting for this moment—made Ruth's guard go up. "I know what you heard last night. I know you saw the warehouse. And I know that Detective O'Malley has been watching you."

Ruth's hand tightened on the gas pump. "What do you want?"

"I need your help."

"I don't need anybody's trouble."

"This isn't trouble. This is a deal." Elizabeth leaned across the seat and opened the door. "Get in. We'll talk."

Ruth should have driven away. She should have gotten in her taxi, gone to her fare, and never looked back. But something in Elizabeth's face—the same kind of shaking she had heard on the phone, only this time it was controlled, contained, like a dam holding back a river—made her open her door and get in.

They drove to a diner in Midtown. Elizabeth ordered coffee. Ruth ordered black coffee and a slice of pie she would not eat.

"Here's the situation," Elizabeth said, stirring her coffee without sugar. "My father is being swallowed by a rival company. I'm the bargaining chip. I'm supposed to marry a man I've never met, and the marriage will make the merger legally binding. But the merger isn't just business. My father helped cover up something. A hit, three months ago, at a dockside warehouse. A union organizer was killed. He had evidence of labor violations. My father knew. He helped bury it."

Ruth felt the coffee go cold in her stomach. "And O'Malley?"

"O'Malley was there. He took money from both sides. He needs both witnesses silenced. You saw the hit. I know about the cover-up. We're both liabilities."

Ruth stared at her. "So what's the deal?"

Elizabeth reached into her purse and pulled out a folded piece of paper. She slid it across the table. It was a driver's license. Ruth's face. Ruth's name. Ruth's address in Queens.

"I need you to do something for me," Elizabeth said. "Tonight is the engagement dinner at the Waldorf. I'm supposed to be there, sitting beside a man I don't know, smiling at people who are calculating my worth. I can't do it. I won't do it. But if I don't show, my father will know I'm running, and he'll lock me in the house, and O'Malley will find me anyway."

She paused. Ruth stared at the fake license.

"Your face is kind of like mine," Elizabeth said. "Not identical, but similar. Pale, dark hair, sharp features. In the right light, at the right distance, people won't tell the difference. I need you to go to the dinner in my place. Wear my dress. Sit beside my betrothed. Smile when I would smile. And in return, I will get you a new identity. Clean papers. New name. Somewhere O'Malley can't find you."

Ruth laughed. It was a short, sharp sound, like a gun cocking. "You want me to impersonate you at a society dinner, and you'll give me a new identity? That's not a deal. That's a cartoon."

"Take it or leave it."

Ruth looked at the fake license. She looked at Elizabeth's face, which was hers but not hers, a face that had been sheltered and preserved and was now terrified of its own shadow. She thought about O'Malley circling her block. She thought about Tommy's cough, which was getting worse. She thought about the $500 that Elizabeth had offered her the night before.

"When do I start?" Ruth asked.

The Waldorf was everything Ruth had expected and nothing she had imagined. Crystal chandeliers, women in diamonds the size of quail eggs, men who spoke in low voices about things Ruth could not pronounce. She stood in a corner wearing a dress that cost more than her Ford and tried not to breathe too loudly.

Elizabeth—no, not Elizabeth anymore, not right now. Ruth. She was Ruth at the Waldorf, wearing someone else's face and someone else's life, and she was trying to remember the instructions: sit when she sits, smile when she smiles, remain silent unless spoken to.

The engagement dinner was a performance. Everyone was playing a role. The father, a hard-faced man named Hartman Sr., was calculating. The betrothed, a young man named James Callahan, was polite and distant and kept looking at Ruth the way a man looks at a math problem he cannot solve. And Ruth, playing Elizabeth Hartman, played the part of the silent bride-to-be, which was not far from the truth—she didn't know what to say, so she said nothing.

But she listened. And what she heard was worse than she had imagined.

The "merger" was not a merger. It was a hostile takeover. Hartman Sr.'s company was bankrupt. He was using Elizabeth as collateral to keep the creditors at bay. And the engagement was not a romance. It was a transaction. James Callahan was not a suitor. He was a lawyer representing the acquiring company, and his job was to make sure the merger was legally bulletproof, which meant making sure Elizabeth signed whatever papers were put in front of her.

Ruth felt a cold anger settle in her chest. She had spent her life watching people like Hartman Sr. push people like her brother around, and now she was sitting at the same table as one of them, wearing his daughter's face, and the only thing keeping her from being complicit was the fact that nobody at this table knew she was not really Elizabeth Hartman.

Which was about to change.

James Callahan leaned across the table and said, in a voice so low only Ruth could hear it: "Miss Hartman, a word?"

They walked to the balcony. The rain had started again, tapping against the glass like a finger asking to be let in.

"I've been a lawyer for seven years," James said. "I've seen a lot of people pretend to be someone they're not. But you're not pretending, are you?"

Ruth said nothing.

"Who are you?"

Ruth looked at him. He was not angry. He was not suspicious. He was curious, the way a man is curious about a puzzle he wants to solve. And that was worse than anger. Anger you could fight. Curiosity you could only answer.

"My name is Ruth Kowalski," she said. "I drive a taxi. Three months ago, I saw a hit at the docks. Detective O'Malley knows. And your fiancée"—she gestured back toward the ballroom—"knows about the cover-up. So we made a deal. I sit here tonight, and she gets me out of the city."

James closed his eyes. When he opened them, they were different. Harder. Focused. "You're the warehouse witness."

"That's right."

"And Elizabeth Hartman knows about the labor violations."

"That's right."

James exhaled slowly. "Do you have any idea what you're holding?"

"I'm a taxi driver, Mr. Callahan. I know how to hold things. I hold the wheel. I hold the meter. I hold onto things that matter."

He looked at her for a long moment. Then he said, "The man who was killed at the warehouse—his name was Frank DeLuca. He was my friend. He was going to testify before the labor board. O'Malley was supposed to protect him. Instead, O'Malley took money from Hartman's people and made sure DeLuca couldn't testify anywhere ever again."

Ruth felt something shift inside her. "You knew?"

"I suspected. I didn't know. But now I do." James turned to look at the rain. "Here's what's going to happen. You're going to go home. You're going to pack a bag. You're going to wait for a call from me. And when I call, you're going to give me everything you saw at the warehouse, every face you recognized, every license plate you remember. And I'm going to make sure it ends up in the right hands."

"What about Elizabeth?"

"Elizabeth is going to do something she has never done in her life. She's going to choose."

The final scene was not dramatic. There was no chase, no shootout, no last-minute revelation. There was just a newspaper the next morning, sitting on Ruth's kitchen table, with a headline that said: "Hartman Labor Violations Exposed; Merger Suspended."

Ruth read it twice. She made coffee. She fed her cat. She drove to a pawn shop on Roosevelt Avenue and sold the diamond earrings Elizabeth had given her—$800, which was more than they were worth, but the pawnbroker didn't ask questions.

She bought a one-way ticket to Seattle. She packed a bag: two changes of clothes, Tommy's old baseball glove, a photograph of her parents, the $800 in cash.

At the bus station, she received a postcard. No return address. On the front, a picture of a small office building with a sign: "Callahan & Associates, Attorneys at Law." On the back, three words: "He chose you."

Ruth folded the postcard and put it in her wallet. She did not throw it away. She did not keep it either. She just put it in her wallet, beside her driver's license, and boarded the bus.

The rain had stopped. The sky was gray but clear. New York stretched out behind her, beautiful and broken and alive, and Ruth Kowalski, who had spent her life driving other people where they wanted to go, was finally driving herself somewhere she had never been.
