The tent was not much to look at—canvas stretched over bamboo poles, anchored with sandbags and lengths of chain. But inside, it was warm, lit by a kerosene lamp that cast golden light across a scattering of tarot cards, a brass astrolabe, and a leather-bound ledger where Jack "The Prophet" Moriarty recorded his earnings.
Outside, the jazz rolled down Lenox Avenue like a river of sound. Trumpets and trombones and a piano that sounded like rain on a tin roof. The Cotton Club was two blocks east, and on Saturday nights the crowd spilled out into the street, drunk on prohibition whiskey and the kind of freedom that only exists when the law says you shouldn't have it.
Jack sat cross-legged on a wool rug that had seen better decades, watching the crowd with the patient eyes of a man who had spent his life reading faces. He was thirty-one, six feet two, with shoulders that still carried the broadness of a heavyweight boxer and hands that had learned to be gentle after years of making them into fists.
He had been a boxer first, a prophet second, and something else entirely—something he was still trying to name—third.
The boxing career had been straightforward. He'd grown up in Harlem, the son of a sharecropper who'd come north during the Great Migration and found that the north was colder than he'd expected. Jack learned to fight at twelve, when a kid twice his size tried to take his lunch money. He learned to win at sixteen, when he knocked out a kid twice his size and twice his weight. By twenty, he was the Harlem Light Heavyweight Champion, and by twenty-two, he was scheduled to challenge for the regional title.
The fight had been in Philadelphia. Three rounds, clean boxing. Then in the fourth, the referee—a man Jack had never seen before—started making calls that didn't make sense. A knockdown that wasn't. A warning for a punch that hadn't landed. By the sixth round, Jack was fighting not just his opponent but the man in the striped shirt, and by the eighth, he was fighting his own frustration, and by the twelfth, he was losing on points to a man who hadn't thrown a serious punch in three rounds.
After the fight, his manager sat him down in a booth at a diner on Broad Street and told him the truth: the referee was paid six hundred dollars to make sure Jack lost, and the man who paid him was a partner in the boxing club that owned the arena.
Jack could have appealed. He could have gone to the newspapers, to the athletic commission, to anyone who might have cared. But he had seen the look in his manager's eyes—the look of a man who had invested in a losing bet and didn't want to lose more. So Jack went home, and he stopped boxing, and he started reading.
He discovered cold reading at a secondhand bookstore on 125th Street—a thin volume titled The Art of the Read, by a man named Arthur Ford who claimed to have read for movie stars and senators. The book taught a simple principle: most people want to believe that someone else knows them. All you have to do is give them the illusion of knowledge, and they will fill in the details themselves.
Jack was good at illusions. It was the one skill the boxing promoters hadn't been able to take from him.
He rented the tent in October, paid three months' rent in advance, and put up a hand-painted sign: The Prophet—Fortune Telling and Life Consultation. He charged five dollars per reading, which was more than most fortune tellers asked, but Jack wasn't most fortune tellers. He was a former boxer with a gift for seeing what people wanted to see and giving it to them with enough specificity that they walked away convinced they'd met a genuine mystic.
It worked. By mid-November, he had enough money to eat regularly and still have a little left over for whiskey on Friday nights. He didn't tell anyone about the money. He didn't tell anyone much of anything.
Then Vivian Cross walked in.
She appeared between two thunderstorms, which in November meant she appeared at noon on a day when the sky was the colour of dirty dishwater. She wore a dress the colour of midnight, cut low at the neckline and high at the throat, a style that suggested either boldness or desperation. Her hair was piled high on her head in the latest fashion, and her lips were painted the exact shade of the roses that grew in the garden of a house she'd never been allowed to call her own.
She was beautiful in the way that made other women nervous and men stupid.
"Are you the prophet?" she asked, and her voice had the smooth cadence of someone who had spent years singing into microphones that cost more than Jack's entire tent.
"I'm the man who tells fortunes," Jack said. "Five dollars."
She placed a five-dollar bill on the table between them. It was crisp and new, the kind of money that had never passed through the hands of a waiter or a shopkeeper. It had gone straight from a register to her purse.
Jack studied her face the way he'd once studied his opponent's—looking for tells, for patterns, for the small movements that revealed what the big movements concealed. He saw the fine lines at the corners of her eyes, the kind that come from smiling when you don't mean it. He saw the tension in her shoulders, held rigid as if holding herself upright required conscious effort. He saw the ring tan on her left ring finger—a pale band of skin where a wedding band had recently been removed.
"Widowed?" he asked.
"Separated," she said.
"Club singer?"
She smiled, and this time it reached her eyes for exactly half a second before she let it go. "How did you know?"
"The callus on your right index finger. From holding a microphone. And the way you carry yourself—like you're used to being watched." He shuffled the tarot cards without looking at them. "Who am I reading for? You, or someone you love?"
She leaned forward, and the kerosene lamp caught the diamonds at her ears—small stones, but real, and given by someone who wanted her to believe they were permanent.
"For myself," she said. "I want to know if I'll ever be free."
Jack stopped shuffling. He looked at her directly, without the performative squint he usually reserved for his most theatrical readings. He saw the fear underneath the beauty, the kind of fear that doesn't come from danger but from captivity.
"Tell me about him," he said.
Her composure cracked, just for a moment. Then it was back, polished and impenetrable. "I don't know what you mean."
"The man who gave you the diamonds. The man whose ring left that mark on your finger. He's not your husband. He's your employer. And he's not just a club owner—he's someone with connections. Political connections, probably. Maybe even police connections." Jack picked up a card at random and laid it on the table. The Tower. He hadn't meant to pick it, but then again, maybe he had. "I see a man who controls this woman through debt and fear. A man who has given her everything she appears to have, and now expects everything she actually is in return."
Vivian's hands were trembling. She folded them tighter. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying that you're not here for a fortune. You're here because you need someone who can see what's happening to you and tell you what to do next. And I'm saying that the man you're describing is dangerous—not just to you, but to anyone who gets in his way."
She was quiet for a long time. When she spoke, her voice was different—smaller, but clearer, like a song played without amplification.
"His name is Marcus Thorne," she said. "He owns the Cotton Club, the Apollo on nights when the Apollo isn't playing, and half the aldermen on City Council. He pays the police to look the other way when he runs numbers operations and sells whiskey to minors. And he pays me to sing and smile and pretend that I don't see any of it."
"Did you ever try to leave?"
"I tried. Once. He found me in Newark three days later, and he didn't yell or hit me or anything dramatic like that. He just sat me down in his office and showed me a folder—my mother's address, my brother's school, the name of the nurse who helped me when I was sixteen and had the baby that didn't survive. He knew everything. And he told me, very calmly, that if I tried to leave again, he would make sure that everyone I loved learned exactly what kind of girl I was." She laughed, and the laugh was hollow. "He had letters written. Dozens of them. Letters from me to men who weren't my husband. Letters that would have destroyed me in a way that no amount of singing could repair."
Jack felt something shift inside him—not dramatically, but with the quiet certainty of a fist unclenching for the first time in years. He had spent his life fighting other people's battles for money and applause. Now here was a woman fighting a battle that mattered, and she was asking him to help without asking at all.
"What do you need?" he asked.
"Escape. A way out that he can't follow. And someone who can help me get there without him knowing until it's too late."
Jack looked at the tarot cards spread across the table. The Tower. Death. The Hermit. He had always thought of them as entertainment, as theatrical props for a performance that kept him fed. But looking at them now, in the golden light of the kerosene lamp, he saw something else: a map.
"The Underground Railroad," he said.
Vivian blinked. "What?"
"Not the actual Underground Railroad. That's over. But the people who ran it—they still exist. In different forms. There are churches in Harlem that still help people escape. Ministers who don't just preach about freedom but practice it. They have routes north—to New England, to New York state, to places where Marcus Thorne's reach doesn't extend."
"How do you know about this?"
"Because I spent two years in prison before I ever threw a professional punch. Not for violence. For fraud. I forged documents to get out of the draft, and they caught me. In prison, you learn who the real men are. Not the ones who can fight—the ones who can think. And one of them taught me about the networks that still exist outside the law. Networks that help people disappear."
Vivian stared at him. "You're serious."
"I'm a prophet," Jack said. "It's kind of my job."
They spent the next three hours planning. Jack mapped out a route from Harlem to Albany, then Albany to Syracuse, using the same logic he'd once used to plan fight strategies—identify the weak points, avoid the strongholds, move through the gaps. Vivian provided intelligence: Thorne's schedule, his routes, the times when his security was thinnest. By midnight, they had a plan.
But plans in Harlem were like jazz improvisations—beautiful in theory, subject to the chaos of reality.
The next morning, Jack woke to find his tent ransacked. The tarot cards were scattered across the floor. The ledger was gone. The kerosene lamp had been knocked over, and the wool rug was scorched where it had caught flame before Jack could stamp it out.
He sat on the edge of the rug and stared at the damage, feeling the old familiar anger rise in his chest—the anger of a man who had been cheated again, who had seen the truth and been punished for it. He could walk away. He could pack his things, find another alley, start over. He had survived worse than this.
Or he could do what he should have done eight years ago, when the referee in Philadelphia took the money and threw the fight. He could refuse to lose.
He stood up, brushed the ash from his pants, and went to work.
By noon, he had contacted three people from his prison days—men who were now ministers, teachers, and one who ran a printing shop in Brooklyn. By evening, he had arranged a meeting at a church on 138th Street with a man named Reverend Williams, who had spent twenty years helping people escape the kind of captivity that Vivian was living in.
By the time Vivian arrived at the church that night, dressed in a plain dress and a hat that made her look like any other woman heading to evening prayer, Jack was waiting for her in the back pew.
"Ready?" he asked.
She nodded.
They walked out of the church together, not as lovers or allies or anything that could be named, but as two people who had decided that the fog of their lives was not going to consume them. They moved through the streets of Harlem with the quiet purpose of people who knew that every moment counted, that one wrong turn could mean capture, that the city around them was beautiful and dangerous and alive in a way that only cities know.
At the corner of 135th Street, Vivian stopped. She turned to Jack, and for the first time, she smiled without hesitation, without calculation, without the weight of performance pressing down on her face.
"Thank you," she said.
"Go," Jack said. "Don't look back."
She walked north, into the fog and the jazz and the freedom that only exists when someone is brave enough to reach for it. Jack watched her go until she disappeared around a corner, then turned and walked south, back to the alley where his tent still stood, damaged but not destroyed.
He entered the tent, picked up a new deck of tarot cards from his bag, and began to lay them out. The fog was still outside, the jazz was still playing, and the prophet was still at work.
But something had changed. Not in the tent, not in the cards, but in the man who sat between them, reading fortunes not as entertainment but as prophecy—because for the first time in his life, Jack Moriarty was making his own future instead of someone else's.
