Part I: The Black Boat

The boat was named Second Chance, which was ironic because Leah McCready had never been given a second chance at anything. She'd had one chance at everything, and she'd managed to blow most of them.

It was twenty-four feet long, painted black, with a small cabin that leaked when it rained and a motor that started after you kicked it three times. Leah owned it the way a hermit owns his cave—the way someone owns something that everyone else thinks is worthless.

She was thirty and had the build of someone who'd learned to survive on less than she needed. And sometimes, things that were valuable in ways nobody else noticed: rare earth metals, tiny fragments of neodymium and cobalt that had been ground to dust by the river's patience and collected in the quiet places where the water slowed down.

She sorted it all at night, by the light of a kerosene lamp, and sold the useful bits to a scrap dealer in a town two hours upstream. It wasn't much money. It was enough.

Part II: The Man on the Road

Ray Delacroix was a truck driver who broke down on Leah's stretch of river. This was technically impossible—there was no road at her stretch of river—but Ray told the story that way, and people who tell stories usually know more about storytelling than they do about facts.

He appeared one evening in late March, when the river was the color of wet bronze and the air smelled of mud and something that might have been wild garlic. He was walking along the bank with a duffel bag over his shoulder and a smile that said he'd been in worse situations and survived them.

"Excuse me," he said. "My rig has a problem. You got a phone?"

Leah looked at him. She was sitting on the bank with her legs in the water, sifting through a bucket of gravel. She shook her head.

"No phone. Fair enough." He sat down on the bank next to her—not too close, but close enough to suggest he wasn't afraid. "Name's Ray. Ray Delacroix."

"Come back tomorrow," Leah said.

It was the first time she'd spoken to him. Ray looked surprised and then pleased, like someone who'd been given a gift he hadn't expected.

He came back the next day. And the day after that. And the day after that.

He fixed her motor. It was a small Yamaha, older than most things Leah owned, and it had been sputtering for months. Ray took it apart, cleaned the carburetor, replaced a gasket he'd brought with him "just in case," and had it running in two hours.

Ray learned about the collection in the third week.

Leah kept her findings in the cabin—stacked in labeled bags, sorted by material and weight. Copper in one bag. Aluminum in another. The small, valuable fragments in a third bag, sealed in a plastic container with a description of weight and composition written in her handwriting on a piece of notebook paper.

Ray found the container by accident. He was looking for a screwdriver in the cabin when he saw it on the shelf, and he picked it up out of curiosity.

"What's this?" he asked, holding up the container.

Leah took it from his hand and put it back on the shelf. "Mine."

"It's metal. But what kind?"

She looked at him. "Not your kind."

He laughed. "Fair enough."

But he kept thinking about it. The description on the bag mentioned cobalt. Neodymium. Rare earth elements. He wasn't a scientist—he was a truck driver—but he knew enough to know that "rare earth" usually meant "expensive."

"How much do you make from that stuff?" he asked.

"Enough."

"Enough for what?"

"Enough."

He didn't press. But the question had been planted, and questions like that grow roots.

He came back with a number. He told her he knew someone—a guy in Houston who dealt in rare earth metals. "Good price," he said. "Better than whatever you're getting from that scrap dealer upstream."

Leah looked at him. She was looking at him the way she looked at everything, but this time there was something different in the look—a calculation, a weighing of possibilities.

"Take it," she said.

She gave him the container. It weighed about four pounds. Inside was the accumulation of three years of mornings spent wading into the river with a sieve and a magnet and a burlap sack. Three years of hands burned and cut and numb with cold, sorting through the industrial waste of a hundred factories.

Ray took the container and promised he'd call her with the price. He drove away in a truck that wasn't his and didn't come back for two weeks.

When he came back, he had money in his hand. Not much. "The market's down," he said. "I told him the metal was yours. He offered what he offered."

Leah counted the money. It was less than a quarter of what the container was worth. She looked at Ray. He looked at the river. Neither of them spoke.

He came back a month later with more excuses. "The market crashed again." "The guy in Houston dropped out." "I found another buyer, but he lowballed me and I was mad so I didn't push."

Leah stopped counting the money.

Part IV: The Empty Cab

Ray disappeared on a Thursday in May. His truck was found at a gas station thirty miles downstream, engine still warm, door still open. The driver's side door. The duffel bag was gone. The gas tank was full.

The state trooper who came to check on Leah was a young man with a face that hadn't yet learned to wear its indifference. He asked her if she'd seen Ray in the last week. If she knew where he might have gone. If there was anyone who might have a problem with him.

Leah shook her head.

"Are you sure? You two seemed close."

She looked at the trooper. She thought about saying something—anything. But what would she say? That Ray had been close and then he hadn't? That closeness, for her, was a sequence: arrive, talk, fix, cook, leave. That the leaving was the part that always hurt, even when she knew it was coming?

The trooper left. He filed a report. They never found Ray.

Leah went back to her routine. She waded into the river. She sifted the gravel. She sorted the metal. She cooked beans and rice and sometimes fish. She sat on the bank and watched the river turn from bronze to grey to black.

She didn't cry. She hadn't cried when the first batch of metal had been shortpaid. She wouldn't cry now.

In the summer, a man named Doc Harlan drifted past her cove in a boat that looked older than hers. He was a wild doctor—someone who practiced medicine on the river, not in a hospital. He'd been a surgeon once, in Memphis, and then he'd seen something in an operating room that he couldn't unsee, and he'd left and bought a boat and started carrying his medical kit upstream.

He stopped at her cove. He asked for coffee. She gave him some. He asked for a place to sleep. She pointed to the dry part of the bank.

He stayed for a week. He fixed her water filter. She showed him the river. He told her about the patients he'd treated—people who lived on the river and couldn't get to a doctor and didn't want to.

"You should stay," Leah said. It was the most she'd said in weeks.

"I can't stay in one place," Doc Harlan said. "I'm not built for it."

"Neither am I," she said.

He left the next morning. But he came back a week later, and a week after that, and then he stopped leaving. He set up a small clinic on his boat and started seeing patients who could float to him. Leah helped him organize the supplies. She became, in a way she hadn't planned, part of something.

Part V: What Floats Up

The river didn't care about Ray. It didn't care about Leah. It didn't care about Doc Harlan's patients or the copper wire or the neodymium or the duffel bag floating downstream with the current.

But Leah kept sifting. Every morning at five. Rubber boots, yellow vest, gloves, sieve, magnet, sack.

She didn't know if Ray was alive or dead. She suspected he was alive and had run from something—debts, probably, or a life he couldn't sustain. She didn't care, in the way that caring requires an energy she didn't have to spare.

But she kept sifting. Because that's what you do when you don't have anything else to do: you sort through the waste of other people's lives and find the small, shiny pieces that still mean something.

Doc Harlan once asked her why she kept doing it. "The river gives and the river takes," she said. "You can't fight it. You can only sift."

"From what?"

"From what."

The river was still muddy. The factories were still upstream. The metal was still at the bottom. And every morning, at five o'clock, a woman in a yellow vest waded into the shallows and began to sift.
