The rain in Los Angeles doesn't wash things clean. It just makes the grime slicker. Jack Mercer knew this better than most, having spent the last six years learning the difference between honest work and work that just paid honest money.
Sam Mercer had found him in 1958, at a county hospital in the San Fernando Valley. Jack was nine years old, sitting on a bench in the waiting room with a plastic bag of clothes and a library card that had expired three months earlier. Sam was there visiting his sister in maternity—his second daughter, the one who didn't make it. He came out of the hospital twenty minutes later with a nine-year-old boy and a paperwork folder that said "temporary guardianship pending."
Nobody asked questions in 1958 Los Angeles. The city was too big, too fast, too busy building itself into something that looked like paradise from the Hollywood sign and felt like purgatory everywhere else.
Frank and Gene came later. Frank in 1960, Gene in 1963. Both born in the Mercer house in Pacoima, a single-story ranch with a pink stucco exterior and a front yard that had once had roses but now had desert sand and a dead sprinkler system. Frank was the older one—loud, physical, the kind of kid who could make an entrance even when he was just walking to the refrigerator. Gene was the opposite: quiet, observant, always watching the room the way a soldier watches a perimeter.
Jack was the third child. The one nobody counted.
He slept in the room that had been a den, which was really just a closet with a window that looked out onto the alley. The wall was thin. He could hear Frank playing his transistor radio and Gene crying in the night when the thunder came. He could hear Sam and Helen arguing about money, which was always, always the subject.

The Mission Ranch was exactly what it sounded like: a building where men who had nowhere else to go slept in rooms the size of closets for fifty dollars a month. "You look like a man who knows what it means to be unwanted," Doc said, watching Jack approach his car. The car door was open, and inside there were jars of dried herbs, bottles of tincture, and a stack of paperback novels with dog-eared pages.
"My dad asked me to leave," Jack said.
"Your dad," Doc repeated, as if tasting the word. "That's one word for it. I would say the man who put sperm in your mother's vagina and then decided you were an inconvenience."
Jack sat on the bumper of the Chevrolet. "What do you sell?"
"Everything and nothing. Depends on what you need." Doc opened a jar and held it up to the light. "This is dried willow bark. For pain. This is dried valiant. For courage. This is dried something I found growing near a cemetery outside of Skokie. For... other purposes."
Jack laughed. It was the first time he'd laughed in weeks.
Doc stayed with Jack at the garage for a month. On the last night, he pulled Jack aside while Jack was raking leaves and said, "I'm leaving. Going south. But I want to leave you something."
He handed Jack a small leather pouch containing three things: a silver watch that didn't work, a photograph of a woman Jack assumed was his mother, and a handwritten note with an address in Tijuana and a name: "Rosa Delgado."
"Rosa knows your father," Doc said. "She knows why he doesn't want you. If you ever need to know the truth, that address is your ticket."
Jack folded the note and put it in his pocket. He never went to Tijuana. But he kept the note for twenty years.
Without Doc, Jack went back to doing what he'd always done: working. He drove a delivery truck for a produce company in downtown LA, made forty dollars a week, spent twenty on food and gas and whatever he could find to sleep in at night. He was functional. He was alive. He was not happy.
In 1972, Sam called him. His voice was different—older, thinner, the way a voice gets when it has been used too much for too little.
"Jack," he said. "I need you."
Jack was sitting on the steps of the Mission Ranch, smoking a cigarette he'd bought with the last of his lunch money. He looked at the sky, which was the colour of a dirty window, and said, "What do you need?"
"For now, nothing. But... I'm getting old. Your mother too. Frank and Gene... they don't call. They don't write. I thought maybe you could—"
"I'll come by tomorrow," Jack said.
He did come by. The Mercer house in Pacoima looked smaller than he remembered. The pink stucco was peeling. The front yard was entirely sand now, with a rusted swing set that had no chains. Sam was in the armchair by the window, reading a newspaper with a magnifying glass. Helen was in the kitchen, making coffee with the kind of methodical care that comes from having nothing else to occupy your hands.
They looked at him the way you look at a car that has broken down on the side of the road and somehow, miraculously, started again.
"Sit down," Helen said. "I made coffee."
They talked for an hour. Sam told him about the pension that wasn't enough. Helen told him about the arthritis in her hands. Jack listened and nodded and said nothing. He was collecting information, the way a soldier collects intelligence before a mission.
"Frank called," Sam said. "He said he'll come next week."
"He called about what?"
"About us. About... whatever it is we are."
Jack looked at his father's hands—wrinkled, spotted, trembling slightly—and thought about all the times he'd seen those hands count out change at the grocery store, all the times he'd seen them slap the kitchen table in frustration, all the times he'd seen them not once reach out to touch Jack's shoulder or ruffle his hair or do anything that a father does for a son who is not invisible.
"I'll come back on Saturday," Jack said. "I can bring some groceries."
He did bring groceries. Every Saturday for the next six months, Jack brought groceries. Canned beans, rice, a loaf of bread, sometimes a carton of eggs if he could afford it. He never stayed for dinner. He never stayed for more than thirty minutes.
In 1976, the house burned.
It was an electrical fire—old wiring in an old house in a neighbourhood that the city had forgotten. Jack was at work, driving his truck on Route 66, when he heard it on the CB radio: "Fire on Maple Street in Pacoima. House is fully involved."
He pulled over. He ran.
When he arrived, the house was already a black frame against the sky. Firefighters were hosing down what was left. The smell was unbearable—burning wood, burning plastic, burning things that should never burn.
Sam and Helen were standing on the sidewalk in their nightclothes, watching their house turn to ash. Frank and Gene were not there. When Jack asked, Helen looked at the ground and said, "They... they came. But then the smoke was so bad and they got scared and..."
"They left," Jack said. It wasn't a question.
"They went to get help," Helen said. Her voice was flat, the way a voice gets when it has already cried all the tears it has.
"They didn't come back," Jack said.
Helen nodded.
Jack took his parents to a motel on Van Nuys Boulevard—the cheapest one he could find, which meant it had a sign that said MOTEL and the word was missing one O. He paid for three nights with forty dollars that he had been saving for a used motorcycle.
His father sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall. His mother sat in the chair by the window and held a tissue to her eyes. Jack sat on the other bed and thought about Doc Varga's silver watch, about the note in his pocket, about the life he had built from nothing and lost everything, and he understood something that he had never understood before:
Doing the right thing doesn't make you happy. It just makes you you.
Helen died in 1981. Sam lived until 1987, by which time he was too frail to speak and could communicate only through touch—holding Jack's hand with a grip that surprised Jack with its strength.
On Sam's last day, Jack sat by his bed and held his hand and thought about the nine-year-old boy sitting on a hospital bench with a plastic bag of clothes and an expired library card. He thought about how that boy had grown into a man who had nothing and gave everything anyway.
"You were a good son, Jack," Sam whispered. His voice was so quiet Jack had to lean close to hear it. "Better than the ones who have the right name."
Jack said nothing. He didn't need to. The rain outside the motel window was falling in its usual indifferent pattern, washing nothing clean, making everything just a little bit slicker.
He drove back to the Mission Ranch that night. He sat on the steps and smoked a cigarette. The sky was the colour of a dirty window. Everything was exactly as it had been before. Nothing had changed. Everything had changed.
