Arthur said he forgave him. He meant it.

Lydia lived another two years. Her final words, spoken on a morning in March when the heather was just beginning to bud, were to Arthur: "We failed you. You are more of a Pendelton than my own flesh. This house, this land—it is yours. Not because of blood, but because of love."

Arthur inherited everything. The estate. The land. The name. He married Beatrice, the minister's niece, who had watched him carry Lydia out of that burning house and decided, right then, that she would never leave his side. But Arthur never stopped caring for the orphanage in Haworth.
