Not for anything I had done. Not for anything I had seen. But for the one thing that made me guilty in his eyes—I had walked Victor's route every night for three months, and I had seen what he saw, and I knew what he knew, and that made me dangerous.

I sat in my cell and watched the fog roll in from the harbor, and I wondered if any of it mattered. The money, the truth, the pattern. None of it had bought me freedom. None of it had brought back the missing people.

I picked up the phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in months. Vera's number. She answered on the second ring.

"I have something for you," I said. "Everything I know. The route. The cases. The truth. All of it."

There was a long silence. Then: "Come down to the office tomorrow. Nine o'clock."

"I will."

"And Jack?"

"Yes?"

"Don't bother packing. You're not going anywhere."

I hung up and looked out the window at the city that had made me and broken me. The fog had stopped. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple that no artist could ever reproduce.

It was beautiful. It was terrible. It was exactly what I had chosen.

And I would choose it again.
