The Guardian's Watch
The store on Wabash Avenue was smaller than most people remembered. Jan Kowalski had opened it in the spring of 1925, three months after arriving in Chicago from a village in Galicia that no longer appeared on any map. The store sold everything: canned goods, fabric, nails, soap, candy for the children, tobacco for the men. It was a place where people came for what they needed and stayed for what they found.
In the back corner of the store, behind a shelf of Polish prayer books, stood the stone figure. It was perhaps three feet tall, carved from dark river rock that Jan had found himself in his father's field before leaving Europe. He had carried it in a burlap sack across the ocean, wrapped in his grandmother's shawl, because it was the only thing from home that he could not bear to leave behind.
The figure was rough-hewn, almost primitive. It depicted a standing figure with arms raised, its face smoothed to featureless abstraction by centuries of river water. The children called it the Guardian. Jan never corrected them.
The two men came on a Tuesday in November. They were young, perhaps twenty, with the hollow-eyed look of men who had not eaten properly in weeks. The Great Depression had reached Chicago by then, and the streets were full of men who had once built this city and now could not afford to live in it.
"Close early tonight," said the taller one, a redhead with a scar through his left eyebrow. His name was Danny, though Jan would not learn that for some time. "We're not leaving empty-handed."
The other man, a dark-haired fellow named Tommy who kept glancing at the door even as he stepped inside, held something in his coat pocket. It was a knife, small but adequate.
Jan did not raise his voice. He did not call for help. He simply stepped between the men and the cash register, which held perhaps forty dollars in coins and bills—the week's earnings, counted and stacked in a tin box.
"This money belongs to the people who buy from this store," Jan said in careful English. "It does not belong to you."
Danny laughed, but it was a thin laugh, the laugh of a man who had forgotten how to be confident. "Move, old man, or you'll be joining the bread lines."
Jan did not move. He stood there, a short stocky man in his fifties with hands calloused from decades of farm work, and he did not move. The men looked at each other. Tommy's hand tightened on the knife.
Then Jan moved.
He did not move toward the men. He moved toward the shelf behind him, and in doing so, he knocked over the stone figure. It fell with a heavy crack, striking the floor and splitting down the center. The two men froze. Even Danny, who had not believed in any of the old country stories Jan sometimes told the children, felt something cold pass through him at the sound of stone breaking.

But the knife stayed in its pocket, and the men turned and walked out into the November night, and Jan Kowalski knelt on the floor of his store and wept over a broken stone.
He did not call the police. He did not tell anyone what had happened. He spent the rest of the night carefully fitting the two halves of the stone figure back together, aligning the crack until it was barely visible, and then he placed it back in its corner behind the prayer books.
The next morning, Mrs. O'Brien from two doors down came to the store. She was a widow who bought her bread here every week, and she noticed immediately that Jan's eyes were red.
"Something trouble you, Jan?" she asked.
He told her. He told her everything, in halting English mixed with Polish, about the men and the knife and the stone breaking. He expected her to be shocked. He expected her to suggest calling the police.
Instead, she was quiet for a long time. Then she said, "My husband used to say that the old country stones had spirits in them. I thought that was just the way he talked to make the children behave."
By afternoon, three people had come to the store. By evening, twelve. Word had spread through the neighborhood faster than any newspaper, faster than any church bulletin. Jan Kowalski had stood alone against armed men to protect what belonged to other people. In a city where men were taking whatever they could find, Jan Kowalski had stood alone and said no.
The men were found two days later. Not by the police, but by Father O'Malley, who ran the parish on Halsted Street. He found them sitting on the steps of a closed factory, drinking coffee from a shared cup, their faces the faces of boys who had done something terrible and were waiting to be told what to do about it.
Father O'Malley did not call the police either. He called Jan.
They met at the store at dawn. The two men stood with their heads down, their hands visible and empty. Danny spoke first.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I was hungry and I was stupid and I'm sorry."
Jan looked at them for a long time. He looked at their hollow faces and their shaking hands and the way they stood, shoulders hunched as though expecting a blow. He thought of his village in Galicia, before the war, before the famine, when his father had worked the same fields that Danny's grandfather might have worked if he had ever been born.
"Help me restock the shelves today," Jan said. "Then come back tomorrow. I need someone to carry the heavy boxes."
Danny nodded, and Tommy nodded, and neither of them spoke again, but they worked. They carried boxes of flour and sacks of potatoes and crates of nails. They swept the floor and swept the sidewalk and swept the steps. They worked until their hands blistered and their backs ached, and when the day was done, Jan gave each of them a meal and a bed in the storeroom and a job starting Monday at a wage that was fair, if not generous.
The stone figure stayed in its corner. Jan never noticed that the crack had not been perfectly aligned. It was visible if you looked closely, a thin dark line running through the stone from head to toe. But he stopped looking at it altogether. He had other things to attend to.
The store thrived. The Depression did not end because of Jan Kowalski or his stone figure, but the neighborhood held together a little longer than it might have, and some of the men who passed through those doors on that November night never picked up a knife again.
Years later, when Jan was too old to stand behind the counter and his nephew took over the business, the stone figure was moved to a place of honor in the front window, where customers could see it when they walked in. The crack was still there, if you looked closely. But most people did not look closely. They saw only the figure, standing with its arms raised, and they felt something they could not name.
The Guardian's Watch, the children called it. And perhaps that was what stone figures were always meant to be: not monuments to the past, but promises for the future. That even when things are broken, they can still stand. That even when the world is cold and hungry, one person standing in a doorway can change everything.
