The Fragile Genius

(Style A: Gothic)

The moors of Yorkshire were a landscape of bruised purples and oppressive greys, where the wind howled like a wounded beast. Dr. Henry lived in a secluded manor, a man of science who sought refuge from the noise of London in the silence of the countryside.

He found the man, Elias, in a state of catatonic shock in a ruined chapel. Elias was a mathematical prodigy, a man who could see the hidden geometry of the universe, but whose mind was a fractured mirror, shattered by a trauma he could not name. Henry, driven by a mixture of professional curiosity and genuine compassion, brought Elias into the manor, dedicating his life to the man's recovery.

Elias's gratitude began as a series of small, unsettling gifts. He would leave complex equations carved into the mahogany tables, or arrange the flowers in the garden into patterns that mirrored the constellations of a sky that didn't exist. Henry found it charming at first—the eccentricity of a genius.

But as the months passed, the "gifts" became intrusive. Henry would wake up to find his bedroom furniture rearranged into a perfect circle around his bed. He would find letters written in his own handwriting, but in a voice that wasn't his, telling him things about his own past that he had spent years trying to forget.

"I am only optimizing your environment, Henry," Elias would whisper, his eyes wide and vacant. "I am removing the friction from your existence."

The horror peaked when Henry discovered a hidden room in the basement. Inside was a meticulous model of the manor, but in this version, every room was a cell, and every door was locked from the outside. In the center of the model was a small, porcelain figure of Henry, bound in silver chains.

Henry realized that Elias wasn't recovering; he was projecting his own internal prison onto the world around him. The "care" Elias provided was actually a process of slow, psychological assimilation. Elias didn't want to be saved; he wanted a companion in his madness, and he had chosen Henry to be the guest of honor.

One night, Henry tried to leave. He found the front door locked, the windows barred, and Elias standing in the hallway, holding a tray of tea with a smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"Where are you going, Henry?" Elias asked softly. "The geometry is finally perfect. We can't let the outside world ruin the symmetry."
