Mud and Water
ACT I: THE DROUGHT
The dirt came first, then the wind, then the rain that never came.
By the time I got to Okfuskee, Oklahoma, the earth had turned to powder. Not the rich, dark dirt that grew things—that was gone, three states and a year ago, along with the farm that my father's family had worked for four generations. Clara lived in a small house with three children and a husband named Dale who worked as a sharecropper on land he didn't own. The house had one room upstairs and one room downstairs, connected by stairs that groaned when you walked on them, and a porch that leaned at an angle that made me nervous just looking at it.

ACT III: THE BREAKING POINT

"Don't," he whispered.
"Don't what?"
"Don't go. Don't leave. I know what this looks like. I know you're thinking about walking away. Don't go."
I didn't have a good answer. The honest answer was that I didn't know whether to stay or go, and that honesty felt like a betrayal. So I said, "I'm not going anywhere."
It wasn't a lie, not entirely. I wasn't going anywhere because there was nowhere to go. Okfuskee was the end of the line, and Dale was the last thing I had that mattered.

ACT IV: THE ECHO
We planted winter wheat in the spring. It wasn't much, but it was something. Dale had no use for his left hand now—he learned to do everything with his right, the way people do when they have no other option. Clara started a garden, small but determined, in a patch of earth that she treated like a holy place.
I stayed in Okfuskee. Not because I wanted to, exactly, but because leaving would have meant admitting that none of it had mattered. The twenty-mile walk, the five dollars, the six hours in the surgical theater, the winter wheat, the garden—it all needed to mean something, and staying was the only way I knew how to make it mean something.
I got a job at a garage, fixing cars that were mostly older than both of us. The work was honest. The pay was barely enough. Some nights, I'd sit on Clara's porch and watch the sun go down over a landscape that was always the same and always different, and I'd think about the dirt.
The dirt had changed. It wasn't powder anymore. It was wet, and brown, and full of things growing in it. Small green shoots pushing upward, reaching for a sky that was finally, mercifully, just a sky and not a prison.
Sometimes I dream about the man I was before I came to Okfuskee. He was walking, always walking, with a shirt on his back and no destination. I think about him sometimes and wonder if he knows where he's going. More importantly, I wonder if he cares.
I don't care anymore. I have a bed, a job, a house that leans at an angle but holds up, and a friend who lost his hand and learned to live without it. That's not much. But in a world that had taken everything else, it was enough.
Enough to stay. Enough to fight. Enough to plant wheat in dirt that didn't want to grow anything.
