THE BROOCH ON THE STEPS

The fog in Whitechapel did not roll in so much as settle—like a shroud dropped by indifferent hands. Eleanor Marsh knew it well. She knew the way it muffled the clatter of hansom cabs on Brick Lane, the way it swallowed streetlamps whole, leaving only their ghostly halos floating in the damp air.

The silver lace brooch sat at the bottom of her drawer, wrapped in tissue paper that had once held a loaf of bread. Arthur had given it to her on a Tuesday—some birthday she had forgotten existed until he appeared at the door with it, held out in the palm of his hand as though it were something extraordinary. It was not. She knew that. It was a cheap thing from a market stall on White Swan Alley, no more than sixpence. But the way he had looked at her when he gave it to her—like she was worth something worth wrapping—made her pocket it without saying thank you. That was the problem with Arthur Pemberton. He never waited for thanks.

Three weeks later, at a charity gathering organized by the women of St. Jude's parish, Eleanor saw it again. On Lady Beatrice Ashworth's chest, pinned precisely where the heart would be if hearts were the sort of things that could be located on the surface of a person—there it was. The same silver lace. The same tiny clasp on the reverse. Arthur's hand, holding it out in that same careless way, in some ballroom on Berkeley Square while Eleanor was down here in Southwark counting copper pennies for her brother's medicine.

"Well now," said Miss Pembroke from the workhouse committee, leaning close with the kind of whisper that was never meant to be quiet. "Don't you think it's charming how the boy from the good family takes an interest in the girl from the bad one?"

Eleanor said nothing. She folded her hands in her lap and watched the fire in the grate until the flames went out entirely and left her in the dark.

Thomas Webb was new to the printing office where she served as an apprentice compositor. He arrived on a Monday, his coat too large for his thin frame, his hair不肯 lie flat, his eyes the color of the Thames on a day when the river had decided to be interesting. He did not look at her the way everyone else looked at her—with the careful, studied expression of someone trying to decide whether pity was appropriate. He looked at her the way a man looks at a wall with good brickwork. With respect for the craft.

"You set type by hand?" he asked on their second conversation, leaning over her shoulder to watch her fingers move.

"By hand, by eye, and—frequently—by mistake," Eleanor said.

"That doesn't sound very efficient."

"It sounds accurate."

He laughed, and it was the kind of laugh that made the cold room feel warmer, though neither of them acknowledged the temperature.

The trouble with Arthur's charity was that it always arrived with a face. Eleanor could have managed money alone—she was good at making sixpence last the weight of three days—but Arthur's help came with a expression, with a tone of voice that said I am doing this for you, which was different from saying you need this. One evening, Mrs. Gable—the landlady—had taken Eleanor's last shilling for the rent and locked her brother Thomas junior in the cupboard because he had been crying for bread. Eleanor stood in the hallway, her hand on the cold iron doorknob, and thought: I could leave. I could walk until I reached the sea.

Arthur found her there.

"Cat," he said—never Eleanor when they were alone, always Cat, as though her name were something too large for ordinary use. "What are you doing out of the flat?"

"Thinking."

"About what?"

"Whether I should have let you bring that brooch."

Arthur blinked. "The brooch?"

"The one you gave me. The one Beatrice is wearing at every party."

"She's wearing it because it's—"

"Because it's what, Arthur? Because it's a nice piece of jewelry? Because you gave it to her? Or because you gave it to me first and she took it from wherever you keep the things you give to people you want to impress?"

"That's not—" Arthur stopped. He stopped often. That was his habit. He would open his mouth, discover there was something honest inside, and then close it again and choose something safer.

"You're not wrong to want to help me," Eleanor said. "You're wrong to think that helping me means deciding what I need."

He stood in the hallway for a long time, the gaslight from the stairwell casting his shadow long against the peeling wallpaper. When he finally spoke, his voice was barely audible: "I don't know how else to help you."

"No," she said. "You do. You just haven't asked."

She left him there. She went to Miss Hargreaves' music room in the East End, where the piano was out of tune and the heat was intermittent, and where the only person who cared whether her fingering was correct was the piano itself.

Miss Hargreaves was a widow with sharp eyes and a habit of tapping her cane against the floor when she was thinking. "You play like someone who's angry," she said after Eleanor's third attempt at Chopin's Nocturne in A minor.

"I'm not angry."

"You're not. You're something else. Something worse."

"Which is?"

"Resigned. There's anger in that, but it's been allowed to go cold."

Eleanor's hands stayed on the keys. She did not move them. She let the silence fill the room like fog.

"I'm not cold," she said finally. "I'm just tired of being warm for other people's comfort."

That evening, Lady Catherine Pemberton sent word through Arthur that Eleanor was invited to a family gathering. Not a ball—something smaller. A tea. Eleanor borrowed a black dress from Mrs. Gable that had belonged to Mrs. Gable's daughter, who had married a sailor and never come back. The dress was too long in the sleeves but the color was right.

The Pemberton house on Berkeley Square was exactly what Eleanor had imagined and exactly what she had not. She had imagined grandeur—she had not imagined how quiet grandeur could be. The servants moved like shadows. The guests spoke in voices calibrated to not disturb anything. Eleanor sat in a chair that was too elegant for her bones and listened to a conversation about cricket and the price of tea and whether Arthur's father would allow him to take his seat in the House before he was twenty-five.

"He's a good boy," Lady Catherine said to Eleanor, with the kind of smile one reserves for a dog that has learned to sit. "He always was. You're a lucky girl, in your way."

In your way. Eleanor parsed the phrase the way she parsed type—letter by letter, looking for the flaw. Lucky in your way. Not lucky. Not unlucky. A different category of fortune entirely. The fortune of something that exists but is not noticed.

When she left, the fog had thickened to the point where the streetlamps were little more than suggestions of light. Arthur was waiting at the bottom of the steps, a umbrella tilted against the damp.

"Was it all right?" he asked.

"Yes."

"You didn't say much."

"I was listening."

"That's not the same thing."

"I know."

They walked in silence for a while, through the fog, through the narrow streets that Arthur would never have to walk alone because he had servants and carriages and a life designed to keep him from the weather. Eleanor walked as though the fog were something she could pass through without leaving a trace.

At her door, she turned. "Arthur."

"Yes?"

"Thank you for the brooch."

It was a lie. But it was a kind lie. And kindness, Eleanor had learned, was sometimes the only thing you could give someone who had only given you things.

She went inside. She took the brooch from the drawer. She carried it back to Arthur's house the next morning and left it on his front steps, wrapped in the same tissue paper. Then she walked to the East End, to Miss Hargreaves' music room, and sat at the out-of-tune piano and played a nocturne that had no name and belonged to no class and required no audience.

Outside, the fog continued to settle over London, thick and absolute, as though the city itself were holding its breath.
