The Last Call at Meridian
ACT I: THE BAR ON FIRST
Maya Rossi closed the deal at six in the evening and spent the next three hours in the bathroom of her Bed-Stuy apartment, staring at her reflection in the medicine cabinet mirror, wondering when she had become a person who needed to close deals to feel like a person.
The account was for a skincare line called LUMIÈRE. The campaign slogan was "Because you deserve to glow." Maya had written it at 11 PM on a Thursday, drinking cold brew out of a mug that said WORLD'S OKAYEST COPYWRITER. She had gotten paid fifteen thousand dollars for three sentences and a storyboard. The world's okayest copywriter.
She dressed in the thing she wore when she wanted to look like she hadn't thought about this for seven years: black jeans, an old band T-shirt she could not remember buying, and boots that had seen better decades.
The bar was called Meridian. It was on First Avenue, between Sixth and Seventh, which meant it was in the part of the East Village that used to be interesting and was now just interesting in the way that real estate prices are interesting. Maya hadn't been here in years. She knew this because she had been avoiding it.
Ethan Cole was on the small stage in the back.
She saw him before he saw her. He was standing with a guitar case open at his feet, collecting tips from people who came to hear him but didn't really listen the way she did. He wore a flannel shirt that was too thin for February and jeans that had been patched at one knee. His hair was longer than she remembered, falling into his eyes in a way that used to drive her crazy because he never fixed it.
She stood in the doorway for a long time. The bar smelled like stale beer and citrus cleaner and whatever it is that happens when six different people have cooked dinner in the same kitchen over the course of a week.
Ethan looked up.
His guitar stopped.
The space between them was not seven years. It was six inches.
He played the next song. It was a song she didn't recognize, which made it worse, because if it had been a song they knew together, it would have been something you could blame on circumstance. An unfamiliar song was just a man telling the truth.
Maya ordered a whiskey. She drank it standing up. She did not leave.
ACT II: THE ROUTINE
She came back the next Thursday. And the next. And the next.
She told herself it was because the bar was on her route home from work, which was technically true -- if you considered that walking three extra blocks was a valid route modification. She told herself it was because Ethan was good, which was also true -- he was very good, better than good, the kind of good that makes you uncomfortable because you didn't sign up for this level of talent on a night when you just wanted to forget your name for two hours.
Daniel noticed after the third visit. He was Maya's creative director at the agency, which meant he was responsible for making sure her copy didn't accidentally offend anyone and that her storyboards made clients feel like they had contributed something meaningful to the creative process.
"You look tired," Daniel said on a Tuesday, leaning against the doorway of Maya's office. He was forty, wearing a sweater that cost more than Maya's first car, and he looked at her the way people look at things they want to protect but know they don't have the right to.
"I sleep fine."
"You don't. Your eyes are doing that thing they do when you're thinking about someone you shouldn't be thinking about."
"That's not a thing my eyes do."
"It is. It's the thing they do when you're carrying something and trying very hard not to let anyone see that you're carrying it."
She laughed, because if she didn't laugh, she might say something that would change the shape of their working relationship forever.
"Go away, Daniel."
He nodded and left. When the door closed, she sat at her desk and stared at the LUMIÈRE storyboard and thought about how seven years ago, Ethan had told her she was "too much" -- too intense, too honest, too unwilling to pretend that the world was nicer than it was.
He had been right, which was the worst kind of right.
The record shop was called Vinyl & Dust. It was in Williamsburg, which meant it was in a neighborhood that had once been nothing and was now everything, and Ethan owned it with the weary ownership of a man who had lost something and was using this shop as a memorial.
Maya went in on a Saturday afternoon, telling herself she was just browsing. Ethan was behind the counter, stacking records by genre with the methodical precision of a man who could control something, even if it was just the order of his own shelves.
"Hi," she said.
"Hi."
"Do you remember me?"
He looked at her. The look he gave her was not a look of recognition -- it was a look of remembering. There's a difference.
"Maya."
"It's been a while."
"Seven years, three months, and --" he stopped, checked himself. "A while."
She picked up a record at random. The cover showed a man staring at a sunset the way men do in records, with a kind of desperate hope. "How are you?" she asked.
"Alive. That's what I've got going for me."
"That's good."
"It's enough."
They stood in the record shop, surrounded by the ghosts of a thousand better days, and neither of them said the thing that was actually happening: that they were two people who had broken each other and were now trying to figure out if the pieces could be assembled into something that looked like the original, or something new, or something that was just the pieces arranged in a pattern that made the cutting stop.
ACT III: THE BREAKING POINT
The crisis arrived in the form of a job offer and a marriage ending, happening on the same day, which is the universe's way of saying: you want me to make this easy for you? I don't do easy.
The job offer was from the agency's London office. Senior copywriter. Triple the salary. A corner office with a view of the Thames. Daniel had mentioned it casually during a lunch that was not casual at all.
"I didn't mention it casually," Daniel said when she called him out on it. "I mentioned it because it's a real opportunity and you're one of the best writers I've worked with and if you go, I'll --" He stopped. He always stopped at the same place. "If you go, I'll miss you."
She took the offer. She told herself it was professional. She told herself it had nothing to do with the fact that Ethan had been distant for three weeks, that he played shorter sets now, that he looked at her in a way that suggested he had already said goodbye and was just waiting for her to catch up.
She told herself a lot of things.
The marriage ending was less complicated. Daniel's wife, who lived in Connecticut and had lived in Connecticut for the past two years, filed for divorce on a Wednesday morning. By Wednesday afternoon, Daniel was sitting in Maya's office, looking like a man who had spent seven years building a bridge to someone and finally reached the other side only to find that the person on the other side had moved away three years ago.
"I don't know what I'm doing," he said. It was the most honest thing he had ever said to her.
"You're doing fine," she said, which was a lie.
"No," he said. "I'm not. And you know what? You deserve someone who knows what they're doing. Or at least someone who's willing to figure it out with you. Not someone who's been in love with you from behind a desk for three years."
She left the office early. She walked to Meridian bar. Ethan was already on stage, tuning his guitar with the focused attention of a man who needed something in this world to respond to his touch.
"Can I get a request?" she asked from the doorway.
He stopped tuning. "Depends on the request."
"Play something that sounds like seven years of almost-saying-something."
He played it. It was the most honest thing she had ever heard.
ACT IV: THE MORNING AFTER
Maya didn't take the London job.
She didn't tell Daniel this directly. She submitted her resignation on a Friday, printed on paper that said COMPANY PROPERTY on the corner, which felt appropriate because she was returning something that had been on loan.
Ethan didn't know about the resignation until Sunday morning, when he found her on the fire escape of her building, drinking coffee from a mug that said WORLD'S OKAYEST COPYWRITER and watching the sun come up over Brooklyn in a way that made the whole city look like it was trying very hard.
"You look like you made a decision," he said, sitting beside her on the rusted metal grate.
"I did."
"Good decision or bad decision?"
"Real decision."
He nodded. They drank coffee in silence, which is the only silence between two people that means anything.
"I was wrong," he said finally. "About you. Seven years ago. You weren't 'too much.' You were exactly enough, and I was too scared to handle it. I chose the merger partner's daughter because it was easy, and easy is the enemy of right, and I know that now."
She looked at him. The morning light made his eyes look brown instead of black, which was new. He looked older. He also looked, impossibly, like the boy who had stood in her father's garden and lied to save her from himself.
"I was wrong too," she said. "I let you walk away without asking you to stay. I told myself you had your reasons, and maybe you did. But I didn't give you the chance to prove it."
They sat on the fire escape as the city woke up around them -- bodega cats arguing over trash, the L train rattling past at an inconvenient hour, a dog barking at nothing in particular.
"I don't know if we can fix this," he said.
"I don't either."
"But?"
"But I'm tired of the almost, Ethan. I'm tired of almost loving you and almost leaving you and almost staying and almost going. I'm seventy years old in my head, and I don't have time for almost anymore."
He reached for her hand. His hands were calloused from guitar strings and record boxes and life. Hers were soft from typing and coffee and not doing enough with them.
They fit.
Not perfectly. Nothing that real ever fits perfectly. But they fit the way two broken things fit when you put them together and realize that the break is what makes the shape.
Below them, the city kept going. Above them, the sky went from gray to blue to whatever color the sky is when it's trying to convince you that new is possible.
Maya finished her coffee. Ethan held her hand. Neither of them said forever. They didn't need to. They were still figuring out today, which was more than seven years of almost had ever given them.
