Lord Ashworth had always believed in the old ways. But Lord Ashworth had been too proud, too blind, too convinced of his own righteousness to listen. He had interpreted every warning as a gift and every gift as a curse, until it was too late.

Lord Ashworth did not rebuild.

He sold the moor to a neighboring landowner and moved to London, to a small flat in Bloomsbury that overlooked a park. He never spoke of Blackwood Manor. He never spoke of the fire. He never spoke of the cat.

But every morning, he walked to the park and sat on a bench beneath an oak tree. And every morning, he touched the scar on his forearm, which had never fully healed, which still ached when the weather turned cold.

The scar became a map of his failures—a permanent reminder of the warnings he had ignored, the gifts he had misunderstood, the mercy he had mistaken for malice.

Years later, when Lord Ashworth lay dying in his Bloomsbury flat, he asked his nurse to open the window. He wanted to hear the trees.

"I made a mistake," he whispered to the darkness. "I thought kindness was a transaction. I thought if I gave, I would receive. But kindness is not a transaction. It is a covenant. And I broke it."

He closed his eyes. The scar on his arm glowed faintly in the moonlight, then faded to white, then disappeared entirely.

When the nurse checked on him the next morning, Lord Ashworth was dead. On his nightstand, she found a single ginseng root, thick and pale, exactly like the one that had appeared on his doorstep at Blackwood Manor so many years ago.

She did not know what to make of it. She threw it away.

But that evening, as she walked home through the park, she felt something brush against her ankle. She looked down and saw a cat with three tails, watching her from beneath an oak tree. Its eyes glowed like embers in the dark.

Then it was gone.
