The Office Girl
Martha Wilson was not the kind of woman people noticed. This was, in her experience, both her greatest liability and her greatest asset. She worked on the forty-second floor of a building on Park Avenue that smelled of lemon polish and money, and her job was to make sure Jack Morrissey\'s calendar didn\'t collapse into chaos.
She was twenty-seven, wore clothes that cost less than Jack\'s coffee budget, and had developed the habit of listening to conversations in rooms she wasn\'t part of. It was how she knew things.
Like the fact that the Philadelphia figures were wrong.
\"Tom,\" she said, standing at his desk with a folder pressed to her chest. \"Can you look at this?\"
Tom Black looked up from his monitor. He was thirty-four, married to a woman who thought he was having an affair with the receptionist (he wasn\'t — he was having an affair with nothing at all, which was worse), and possessed of a gaze that could strip paint.
\"What is it?\"
\"The numbers. They don\'t add up. Not by a little. By a lot.\"
Tom took the folder. He was silent for a long time. When he finally spoke, his voice was flat, the way it got when he was trying not to feel something.
\"Martha. Why are you showing me this?\"
\"Because you\'re the only person in this building who reads past the first page.\"
He looked at her then — really looked at her — and she felt something shift in the space between them. Not attraction. Not exactly. More like recognition. The way you might recognize a fellow survivor of the same shipwreck.
\"Don\'t email this,\" he said. \"Don\'t tell anyone. I\'ll — I\'ll have a look.\"
\"I already emailed it.\"
Tom\'s expression didn\'t change, but she saw his jaw tighten. \"To who?\"
\"To the person in Philadelphia who should have been receiving it from the start.\"
He nodded slowly. \"You\'re either very brave or very stupid.\"
\"Probably both.\"
They tried to stop her in Jersey.
Two sedans — black, tinted windows, plates removed — appeared simultaneously at the exit ramp, pinning her rental car between them like a beetle in a display case. Martha sat very still and watched the rearview mirror fill with the face of a man she\'d seen once at a company dinner — Lewis, from the Philadelphia office. He was bowing slightly, hands on the hood of her car, rain dripping from the brim of a hat that had no business being worn in June.
\"Miss Wilson,\" he called through the window. \"We\'re concerned. The situation is — \"
\"My work is done,\" Martha said.
\"Just a few more forms. Five minutes.\"
\"I have a flight.\"
\"We\'ll call it for you.\"
Martha reached into her bag and pulled out her phone. She scrolled to a number she\'d memorized three weeks ago but had never called. The man who answered said only: \"Martha?\"
\"Jack. I need you to do something.\"
\"Say the word.\"
\"Come home.\"
A pause. Then, in that voice that could make anything sound like a secret: \"I\'m already on my way.\"
Tom watched it all from his desk on the forty-second floor. He watched Martha leave at four in the morning, watched Jack\'s car pull up twenty minutes later, watched them both disappear into the elevator together without a word exchanged in the lobby.
He watched the news the next day — SEC agents arriving at headquarters, faces grim, suits expensive, purpose clear.
He watched Martha not come in for three days.
On the fourth day, she appeared at her desk at eight-fifteen, exactly as she always did. She wore the same navy blouse. Her hair was pulled back in the same plain style. She opened her inbox and began processing messages in chronological order, as though nothing had happened.
Tom walked over with two coffees. He set one down in front of her.
\"You look like you went to war,\" he said.
\"I feel like I went to war,\" Martha said. \"But I lost.\"
\"Did you?\"
\"Jack lost his job. The company — well, the company is fine. It\'s always fine. But Jack. They\'re calling it a \"resignation.\" I\'m calling it what it is.\"
\"What are you calling it?\"
Martha took a sip of coffee. \"A very expensive lesson.\"
Tom sat down in the chair opposite her desk. \"Are you going to be all right?\"
\"I\'m always all right, Tom. I\'m the office girl. I\'m designed to be all right.\"
He wanted to say something else — something about courage, or bravery, or the strange quiet heroism of people who refused to look away — but he didn\'t. He just sat there, drinking coffee, watching Martha Wilson process her inbox while the city outside continued, as cities always do, to turn without stopping for anyone.
His phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number:
\"Thank you. — Det. Lin\"
Tom deleted the message. He didn\'t know who Det. Lin was, and he had the strong feeling he didn\'t want to.
Martha didn\'t look up from her screen. But he noticed her hands were steady.
