The Remede Curse

ACT I

The rain in New Orleans does not fall so much as it hangs in the air, a suspended curtain of moisture that turns everything—the French Quarter's wrought-iron balconies, the moss-draped oaks of the garden district, the cracked pavement of the Treme—into something half-seen and half-remembered. The funeral was small, which is to say it was exactly the size that a twenty-six-year-old jazz pianist's passing warranted in a city that loses young people to the river every week.

Seraphine DuBois stood at the edge of the grave and watched the casket lower. She wore black silk that had belonged to her grandmother and thought, with a bitterness that surprised her, about the last time she had seen Raphael play. He had been at Le Remede's pharmacy on Rampart Street, sitting on the counter with his piano hands wrapped carefully around a cup of chicory coffee, listening to Beaufort LeBlanc explain the difference between wild-crafted echinacea and farm-grown.

"He knows his herbs," Raphael had said, and Seraphine had felt something tighten in her chest at the genuine admiration in his voice. Men like Raphael—musicians, storytellers, people who measured life in measures and bars—trusted the old ways without question.

The pharmacist had agreed. Beaufort had been pleasant, professional, the kind of young man who made you believe he had inherited his father's and grandfather's knowledge as naturally as he had inherited his brown eyes. Seraphine had walked away without a second thought, the way you do when a conversation is about nothing more than tea and tinctures.

Raphael had drunk the tincture three days later. His body had stopped two days after that.

The priest spoke Latin. Seraphine understood about half the words. Her grandmother had taught her the rest over Sunday breakfast, in the kitchen of the Dupre townhouse where Seraphine had spent her childhood before the family fell apart and the pharmacy had been sold and the name DuBois had become something people whispered about in the French Quarter with a mixture of respect and caution.

Her great-great-grandmother had founded the DuBois Remedy House in 1842. It had become the most trusted herbal pharmacy in the city, serving the Creole community, the poorer White families who could not afford European doctors, and anyone who believed that the earth provided what medicine could not. Then in 1923, a patient had died. A wealthy man from the Garden District who had taken a preparation for what the family records called "nervous exhaustion" and instead developed acute kidney failure. The medical board had investigated. The pharmacy had closed.

Seraphine had never been told the details. Grand-mere Marie would only say: "There are things in the old remedies that even we do not fully understand. Things that were passed down and never questioned."

Now Raphael was in the ground, and the editor at the Creole Herald was asking Seraphine to write about what had killed him.

ACT II

Le Remede occupied a narrow building on Rampart Street that had once been a warehouse and before that, possibly, something that predated the American purchase entirely. The sign above the door had been painted in faded gold lettering that Seraphine could not quite read through the rain: Le Remede—Est. 1847.

She pushed open the door and was hit by a wall of scent—dried lavender, earthy roots, something sweet and medicinal that she could not identify. The interior was narrower than it appeared from the street, lined with wooden shelves that ran from floor to ceiling, each shelf labelled in neat copperplate handwriting. Jars of dried leaves, bundles of tied herbs, glass bottles filled with amber and green liquids.

Beaufort LeBlanc emerged from the back room as if he had been expecting her. He was taller than she remembered, or perhaps the narrow space made him seem taller. His dark hair was pulled back in a loose knot, and he wore a faded linen shirt rolled to the elbows, revealing forearms dusted with fine brown hair and stained with what looked like walnut ink.

"Miss DuBois," he said. "I received your editor's call."

"Seraphine," she said. "Just Seraphine is fine."

He nodded, as if her first name were a piece of information he was filing away carefully. "Can I help you? The echinacea is in the second aisle. The tinctures—"

"I'm not here for echinacea." She pulled a folded newspaper from her coat pocket. "Raphael Thibodeaux. Twenty-six. Jazz pianist. Died three days after taking a herbal preparation from this pharmacy."

The change in his face was almost imperceptible. A slight tightening around the eyes, a microsecond pause before he spoke. But Seraphine had spent her life reading the micro-expressions of people who carried family reputations like heavy coats. She knew the difference between surprise and recognition.

"I am sorry for your loss," he said.

"Who prepared the tincture?"

"Someone in my family used the recipe. I was in New Orleans for the weekend—back at the university during the week. My aunt Colette manages the daily operations."

"Can I see the recipe?"

Beaufort studied her for a moment. "Of course. But I should mention that our formulations are not—standard. They are family recipes, passed down through generations. Some of the ingredients are unusual."

"Unusual how?"

He went to the back room and returned with a leather-bound notebook. The pages were yellowed, the handwriting elegant but dense, filled with Latin names and dosages measured in grains and drams. Seraphine flipped through the pages and found the entry for Raphael's preparation—a formula for "nervous exhaustion and melancholic disposition." The ingredients list was long and mostly familiar: valerian root, passionflower, chamomile.

But the last ingredient was written in a different ink, as if added later. Skullcap. And beneath it, in smaller letters: "Scutellaria lateriflora—high potency. One grain. Do not exceed."

"Skullcap is generally considered safe," Beaufort said. "It is commonly used in—"

"How much was administered?"

He hesitated. "I cannot confirm the exact dosage. That is a matter between my aunt and the patient."

Seraphine closed the notebook and handed it back. "I'll need to speak with your aunt."

"Aunt Colette is—protective of our processes. She does not speak to the press."

"Then I'll speak to her as a member of the community, not the press."

His expression shifted again, and this time Seraphine was certain he understood the distinction she was drawing. She was not his enemy. She was something more dangerous—a DuBois who wanted to know the truth.

ACT III

The investigation took five days. Seraphine interviewed three people who had purchased preparations from Le Remede in the previous year. All reported side effects ranging from dizziness to nausea to, in one case, "seeing things that were not there." None had been seriously ill. None had died.

But the pattern in the family notebook was what chilled her most. She had obtained a photocopy of the relevant section through a contact at the historical society who owed her a favour. Every twenty to thirty years—coinciding with what the family records called "the succession of the primary practitioner"—there was an entry marked with a small X in the margin. Beside each X was a brief note in Latin: "patient expired following administration."

Seven entries over one hundred and seventy years. Seven deaths, spaced across generations, each one occurring when the pharmacy passed from one LeBlanc practitioner to the next.

The X entries all referenced the same base formula, modified with different "potency enhancers"—ingredients that appeared in no other recipe in the notebook. Skullcap was one. Aconite root was another. And one entry, in the oldest handwriting, referenced a substance that Seraphine could not identify from the abbreviated Latin name.

She took the photocopy to Beaufort on the fifth day. He was in the pharmacy after hours, sweeping the wooden floor with a broom that looked far too large for him. The rain had stopped, but the air was still thick and warm, carrying the distant sound of a trumpet from a Frenchmen Street club.

"You found them," he said, not stopping his sweeping.

"Seven deaths. Seventy years. All during succession periods."

He set the broom against the wall and leaned against the counter. "I suspected. When I started reading the family archives at the university, I found references to the X entries in letters between my great-grandfather and his father. They called it 'the price of the remedy.' They believed that certain potent formulations required a 'sacrifice of the spirit' to be properly balanced. A superstitious idea, obviously. But one that the family took seriously enough to document."

"Did they administer these enhanced formulas knowingly?"

"I believe that my great-aunt Colette does. I am less certain about my grandfather, and even less certain about the ones before him. The knowledge of which formulas were modified may have been kept secret even within the family."

Seraphine felt the weight of the photocopy in her hand. "Your aunt runs the pharmacy now. Does she still use the X formulas?"

Beaufort was quiet for a long time. The trumpet from Frenchmen Street had faded into the humid night. "I cannot confirm that. But I can confirm this: the current owner of this pharmacy is responsible for what is sold behind that counter. Regardless of who mixed the tinctures."

"What do you intend to do?"

He looked at her across the dim pharmacy, and in the low light his face was all shadow and sharp angles. "I intend to finish this conversation. And then I intend to decide whether I am a pharmacist or a LeBlanc."

ACT IV

Seraphine's article ran on a Sunday, when newspaper readers had time to sit with something complicated. She did not name Beaufort as a defendant. She did not sensationalise the seven deaths. She wrote about the DuBois pharmacy's history, about the legacy of herbal medicine in New Orleans, about the gap between traditional knowledge and modern medical standards, and about the young man who was now inheriting a building, a reputation, and a responsibility that spanned three generations.

The response was immediate and polarised. The state medical board opened an investigation into Le Remede. Aunt Colette gave a brief statement to the Times-Picayune denying any wrongdoing and asserting that all preparations were made "according to traditional standards of safety." The pharmacy remained open.

Beaufort did not give interviews. He did not close the pharmacy. He continued to fill prescriptions, to advise customers, to stand behind that counter in his faded linen shirts, looking like a man who had decided what he was and was no longer surprised by anyone's opinion of it.

Seraphine visited him once, a week after the article published. She brought a bottle of champagne that she knew her grandmother would have disapproved of and found Beaufort in the back room, sorting dried roots by colour and texture.

"You wrote a fair story," he said, not looking up from the roots.

"You didn't deny the X entries."

"No. I did not."

She set the champagne on a shelf and stood beside him, looking at the rows of carefully labelled jars. "What happens now?"

"Now I continue to run a pharmacy in a city that has always believed in the healing power of plants. Some of those plants are safe. Some are not. My job is to know the difference."

"And do you?"

He paused, holding a dried root between his fingers, examining it in the lamplight. "Seraphine. Every pharmacist in this city knows that the line between medicine and poison is drawn by dosage, not by ingredient. The question is not whether I know the difference. The question is whether anyone else does."

She left without drinking the champagne. On the street outside, the humidity wrapped around her like a damp coat, and the distant sound of a second-line parade drifted through the night. She thought about the seven deaths in the notebook, about the way Beaufort had examined that root as if it contained an answer she had not yet earned the right to hear.

The rain began again, soft and insistent, turning the French Quarter into the same half-seen watercolour it always was in October. Seraphine walked home without an umbrella, feeling the moisture on her face the way you feel a hand you do not quite want to pull away.
