The Lady from the Slums
I did not mean to become the center of anyone's story. But that is what happens when you are a variable in a calculation that was never yours to begin with—you become the answer no one asked for.
My name is Reginald Ashworth. Third of my name. Born on a Tuesday in 1908, in a house on Royal Street in the Garden District of New Orleans, where the jasmine grows so thick in summer that you cannot walk from the front door to the gate without feeling like the garden is trying to swallow you. This was New Orleans in the 1920s—everything trying to swallow everything else. The humidity, the history, the weight of four generations of Ashworths who had built a life on the presumption that they were owed something by the world simply because they had been born into the right family with the right name and the right shade of pale skin that had, through the alchemy of Portuguese and French and Spanish blood, arrived at a color that society classified as acceptable.
I hated it. I hated it from the moment I could form the thought, which was earlier than most children my age.
My father, Professor Reginald Ashworth the Second—second of his name, which is a curse in a family where being second means being perpetually measured against a first who died at the Somme in 1916—spent his days at Tulane teaching classical literature and his evenings at clubs where men discussed the future of the South as if the South were a ship that needed a captain and not a lifeboat.
My mother, Eleanor—née Duval, another family name heavy with history—spent her days painting watercolors of magnolia blossoms and her evenings hosting bridge parties where women discussed their children and their servants and the declining standards of the younger generation, which, in 1928, meant jazz, short skirts, and the idea that women might want to do something other than marry and produce heirs.
I was their son. I was their project. I was their disappointment.
Then Julian Cross arrived.
Julian Cross was thirty-five, a native of Massachusetts, and possessed the kind of earnestness that in a man his age could only be described as either admirable or infuriating, depending on whether you had spent your entire life surrounded by people who spoke without believing what they said. Julian spoke and believed. This made him dangerous. Not in the way that a gun is dangerous—in the way that a candle is dangerous in a house full of dry tinder.
He had come to New Orleans to work for the Public Works Administration, laying telegraph lines through the parishes of Louisiana, connecting towns that had never been connected to anything larger than the next town over. He was, in his own words, a "citizen engineer"—someone who believed that infrastructure was not just steel and wire but a moral imperative, that the right to communicate with the wider world was not a privilege but a right, and that the people living in the swamps and the bayous and the forgotten corners of this state deserved to know that a world existed beyond their parish lines.
He brought Alice Boudreaux home with him.
Alice was sixteen, the daughter of an Italian immigrant father (dead, drowned in the Mississippi when she was three) and a Creole mother (dead, childbirth complications, when she was eight). She had been raised by a grandmother (dead, typhoid, when she was twelve) and then, for two years, by a制帽厂 in downtown New Orleans, making hats that other women wore to church on Sundays while she sat in a back room breathing felt dust and earning seventy-five cents an hour.
She looked like a weed that had grown through a crack in the sidewalk—uninvited, unpruned, stubbornly alive.
I saw her for the first time standing in the colonnade of our house, where Julian had deposited her like a package that needed to be received. She was wearing a dress that had been somebody else's daughter's dress and then somebody else's after that, and it fit her in the way that a sentence fits a foreign language—technically correct but missing the music.
She stood there, small and thin and dark-eyed, with hair that had been cut short because long hair cost money at the barber, and she looked at the colonnade—the white columns, the jasmine, the moss hanging from the live oaks—as if she were trying to memorize something she knew she would forget.
"That's Alice," Julian said. He was standing next to me, and I noticed that his manner with me was different from his manner with my parents. With them, he was deferential. With me, he was something else. Something I could not identify. Parental? No. It was as if he saw me not as a person but as a condition—like the humidity or the moss, something to be observed and understood and perhaps, if you were very lucky, changed.
"How long will she stay?" I asked.
"As long as she needs," Julian said.
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one that matters."
My mother took to Alice immediately, which surprised me. Mother was not a woman who took to anyone quickly. She had standards, and Alice, in her somebody-else's-daughter's dress and her short hair and her accent that mixed New Orleans Creole with the flat tones of the factory floor, did not meet a single one of them.
But Mother saw something in Alice that I did not see—not yet. She saw a subject. A painting. A metaphor. The Girl from the Bayou, she called her. She had Remy already sketching her—the family's houseguest, a painter from the Quarter who specialized in portraits of women who looked like they had walked out of a Millet painting and into a Duval living room.
I watched all of this from the sidelines, because that is what I did in my own family. I was the third of my name, and third meant peripheral, an afterthought, a person who existed in the same photograph as more important people but was positioned slightly to the left and slightly behind.
But as weeks passed, I found myself watching Alice more carefully, and what I saw complicated the simple narrative that Julian had constructed around her.
Julian saw a victim who needed saving. My mother saw a subject who needed painting. The servants saw a girl who had replaced the maid's daughter in the affections of the house. I saw... something else.
I saw a girl who taught herself French by reading my mother's books—Dumas, Hugo, Balzac—stumbling over the vowels at first, then finding the rhythm, then reading whole passages aloud in the garden with a precision that made my French tutor, Monsieur LeBlanc, stop mid-lesson and stare.
I saw a girl who could fix anything mechanical—a clock, a bicycle, the radio that crackled in the kitchen—and did so with hands that were rough and calloused and stained with the permanent gray of factory work that no amount of soap could remove.
I saw a girl who looked at the jasmine on our walls with something that was not wonder. It was assessment. She was calculating how much jasmine it would take to fill a bouquet and how much a bouquet sold for at the market on St. Charles Avenue, and whether she could pick enough in a day to pay for a week's groceries.
This was the difference between her and me. She assessed the world in terms of survival. I assessed it in terms of meaning. And I began to understand that my assessment was a luxury she could not afford.
The turning point came in early autumn, when I discovered something in my father's study that changed everything I thought I knew about the Ashworth family, about Julian, and about myself.
I had gone to the study to look for a book—something by Thucydides, because my father always said that understanding the Peloponnesian War was the key to understanding why civilizations collapsed, and I wanted to see if he was right. The door was open. Julian was inside, sitting in my father's chair, speaking in a low voice.
"...the DuVal collection is exactly what I need," Julian was saying. "The way the family presents the girls—as living metaphors for social progress. It's beautiful. It's powerful. And it's entirely false."
My father made a sound that I remembered now as the sound of a man who believes he is hearing an echo of his own voice and is pleased by it. "You think so?"
"I know so. Mrs. Ashworth's paintings of Alice—they're going to win medals. And when they do, the story behind them—the poor Creole girl from the bayou, rescued by a Northern engineer and transformed by Southern high society—will be even more powerful than the paintings themselves."
"She's not a project."
"She is to them. To me, she's more complicated than that. But complication doesn't sell tickets to the Paris Salon."
I stood in the hallway, my hand on the doorframe, feeling the wood beneath my palm like a pulse. The house was silent. The jasmine outside was blooming, thick and sweet and suffocating.
I went to my room and sat on the edge of my bed and thought about what I had heard. Not Julian being cruel. Not my father being evil. Both of them being something far worse: both of them being convinced that they were doing good.
Because that is the thing about exploitation dressed up as charity—it never looks like exploitation to the person doing the exploiting. It looks like a mission. It looks like a calling. It looks like the kind of thing that gets remembered in family histories as a noble chapter.
I thought about Alice, sitting in the garden reading Hugo aloud, her hands stained gray, her accent imperfect, her eyes bright with something that was not gratitude but hunger—hunger for knowledge, for language, for a way to make sense of a world that had given her nothing and expected her to be thankful for scraps.
And I thought about myself—Reginald Duval Ashworth III, third of my name, son of a professor and a painter, raised in a house full of jasmine and lies, educated in classics and complicity.
I was not saved either. I had just been saved more politely.
The decision to leave was not dramatic. In my family, drama was performed, not felt. I left on a Tuesday morning, the same day of the week I had been born twenty years earlier, which seemed appropriate. I packed a bag. I wrote a letter to my parents that said less than I meant and more than they deserved. I walked out the front door, past the colonnade where Alice had stood when she first arrived, past the jasmine that was trying to swallow the garden, and onto Royal Street, where a streetcar was waiting to take me to the train station.
I did not tell Alice I was leaving. Not because I did not want to, but because I knew that if I saw her one more time, I would not be able to leave. And she needed me to leave, because my leaving was the only honest thing I had to offer her—the only thing that was not a performance, not a project, not a metaphor.
The train to the Texas border left at noon. I bought a ticket to New Laredo, which I had never heard of until that morning, and which turned out to be a town that existed primarily as a place where trains changed direction. I sat in the window seat and watched New Orleans recede—the Garden District, the river, the smokestacks of the industrial quarter where Alice had spent two years breathing felt dust—and I felt something that was not sadness and not relief and not any of the words that my education had given me for this particular configuration of feelings.
It was the feeling of a calculation resolving. Of a variable that had been unknown for twenty years finally taking a value.
I got off the train at New Laredo. I walked through a town that smelled like diesel and dust and something I could not name. I found a bus that was going to Monterrey. I bought a ticket.
In Mexico, I would learn a new language. I would find work that had nothing to do with my family name or my father's expectations or my mother's paintings. I would live in a room that did not have a colonnade and did not have jasmine and did not have the kind of beauty that comes from wealth and history and four generations of people who presumed they were owed something by the world.
And I would be, for the first time in my life, nobody's project.
Alice stayed in New Orleans. I know this because I received one letter from her, six months later, written in a hand that had improved enormously since the first time I saw her write her name on a piece of paper—back then it looked like something carved by someone who had never held a pencil before. Now it looked like something carved by someone who had held one for a very long time and was very tired of it but would never put it down.
The letter said: "I am learning to paint. Not the way your mother teaches. The way I want to learn. The girl from the bayou is becoming a painter who paints what she sees, not what other people want her to see. Thank you for leaving. It was the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me."
I folded the letter and put it in my pocket and kept walking. The road in Monterrey was long and dusty and straight, and the sun was hot, and I did not look back.
