The Coal Snake
ACT I
The town had a name once. Coal Creek. Something on a map drawn by someone who had never been there and imagined it was like coal—black and hard and useful. It was none of those things. It was grey and soft and useless, a smear of pulverized rock and rusted machinery at the bottom of a valley in southern West Virginia where the mountains had been cut open and the inside had bled out.
Mary sat on the edge of Mine Number Two with her legs dangling over the drop. She was nineteen years old and she had not spoken in four years. Not since the explosion. Not since the gas had filled the tunnel and she had inhaled it and it had taken her voice the way a thief takes a wallet—efficiently, without ceremony, and without leaving anything behind.
The snake was below her, coiled on a ledge of exposed rock, its body the colour of the coal dust that covered everything in Coal Creek. It was twelve feet long, maybe more, and it was thick as a tree trunk. Not a coal snake, technically. Coal snakes are small things, harmless, the kind of thing you find under a log and put back where you found it. This was bigger. It was something else. Something that had gotten into the mine through the flood tunnels twenty years ago, when the water had started rising and the mine had started drowning, and it had gone down and down and down and changed, the way things change when they are pushed into darkness for long enough.
Mary looked at the snake. The snake looked at Mary. Neither of them moved.
Children threw stones at her sometimes. They would gather at the edge of the pit and call her Snake Mary and throw rocks that bounced off the rock face and disappeared into the water below. She never threw them back. She never said anything. She just sat on the edge of the pit and looked at the snake and let the stones hit her shoulders and her arms and once, twice, her face, and she did not flinch.
Not because she was brave. Because flinching required energy, and Mary had learned long ago that energy was something you saved for things that mattered. The snake mattered. Everything else did not.
ACT II
The company man came on a Tuesday. He was from Pittsburgh, which in the economy of Coal Creek was the same thing as saying he was from another planet. He wore a suit that cost more than Mary's father had made in a year, and he had a briefcase and a smile that was designed to make people feel safe and was actually designed to make them sign things.
His name was Mr. Kowalski. He did not look at Mary when he spoke to the town. He looked at the men—the men who had worked the mines or whose fathers had worked the mines or whose sons would work the mines if there were any mines left to work—and he spoke in a voice that was carefully calibrated to sound confident without sounding arrogant.
"We're going to clean this place up," he said. "Environmental remediation. The federal government is providing funds. We'll fill the pits, cap the tunnels, plant grass on top, and in five years, nobody will even remember this town existed."
Nobody would remember. That was the point. Because what had happened in Coal Creek was not something you put in a report and filed away. What had happened was that the mine had flooded with acid water, and the acid water had eaten through the rock, and the rock had released things that had been sleeping in it for millions of years, and some of those things had gotten into the water supply, and some of the people in Coal Creek had gotten sick, and some of them had died, and the company had paid the families and told them to be quiet and the federal government had looked the other way because Coal Creek was too poor and too far away and too irrelevant to matter.
But the snake mattered. Not to the company, but to the process. The snake was in Mine Number Two, and Mine Number Two was going to be filled, and the snake needed to be removed first.
"Can you help us find it?" Mr. Kowalski asked Mary. He had been told, by the men of Coal Creek, that the girl who sat by the pit and talked to the snake knew where it was. He did not believe in snakes. He believed in contracts and signatures and the slow, inexorable machinery of progress.
Mary looked at him. She had learned, in four years of silence, to look at people in a way that made them uncomfortable. It was not a threat. It was not defiance. It was simply the act of seeing someone—the real someone, beneath the suit and the smile and the briefcase—and making them aware, for a moment, that they were being seen.
Mr. Kowalski looked away first.
ACT III
He didn't send men to kill the snake. He sent three miners, because miners knew how to handle things, and also because miners were poor and ten dollars was ten dollars and ten dollars in Coal Creek was the same as a hundred dollars in Pittsburgh.
They came at noon. Three men in coveralls and steel-toed boots, carrying propane tanks and torches and the kind of grim determination that comes from having nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Mary was at the edge of the pit when they arrived. She sat down. She crossed her legs. She put her hands on her knees and she looked at them, and they stopped.
"Miss," one of them said. His name was Dale. He was young, maybe twenty-five, with a face that had already learned the particular expression of men who know they are doing something they will regret but are doing it anyway because regret is a luxury you can't afford until after you've eaten. "We need to get past you."
Mary did not move.
"It's just a snake," Dale said. "It's not personal."
Mary looked at the snake. The snake was coiled on its ledge, its body half in shadow, its tongue flicking in and out like a metronome keeping time with a song only it could hear. She looked at it the way you look at something you love when you know it's going to die.
Then she looked back at the miners. And she shook her head.
Just once. A small movement. Almost imperceptible.
Dale sighed. "Look, miss. We don't want to hurt it. We just want it gone. The company's paying us ten dollars each. That's our rent for the month."
Mary stood up. She walked to the edge of the pit and looked down at the snake. Then she turned to the miners and pointed at the pit, and then at the snake, and then made a cutting motion across her throat.
"You want us to burn it," Dale said.
Mary shook her head. She pointed at the pit, and then at the ceiling of the mine, and then made a falling motion with her hands.
Dale looked up at the rock face above the pit. It was old, he knew. Old mines were all old. The timber supports had rotted decades ago, and the rock had been weakened by years of acid water, and it was only a matter of time before—
"Get back," he said.
"What?"
"Get back!" He grabbed his companions by the arms and pulled them backward, away from the edge of the pit. The other miners followed, confused, and then they heard the sound—a deep, groaning crack, like the earth itself was clearing its throat—and the ceiling of Mine Number Two collapsed.
Rock poured into the pit. Dust rose like a storm. The three miners fell backward into the heather and stared up at the sky and tried to remember whether they had left the stove on or whether they had told their wives they loved them or whether any of it mattered now.
When the dust settled, Mine Number Two was full of rock. The snake was gone. Mary was gone. And Dale was sitting in the dirt with his hands on his head, wondering how he was going to explain this to the company.
ACT IV
They found Dale three days later. He had walked into the swamp and not come back. The other two miners quit and moved to Cleveland. Nobody in Coal Creek was surprised. People left Coal Creek all the time. It was a town that existed primarily as a place you escaped from.
Mary was not found. She had walked out of Coal Creek on the morning after the collapse, carrying nothing but a small cloth bag in which she had placed the thing she had found in the snake's stomach when she had gone down into the pit after the collapse. It was not a pearl or a gem or anything magical. It was a tumor. A large, calcified mass that the snake had been carrying for years, the way a person carries a secret they can't tell anyone.
They called it a dragon's egg in the bar. They told stories about how Mary had swallowed it and how it would grow inside her and how one day she would burst open and a thousand snakes would come out and devour the town.
Mary heard these stories, somehow, the way stories travel in small towns—through the cracks and the gaps, distorted and magnified, becoming something larger and more terrible than the truth.
She did not care. She was in a town that was not Coal Creek. It was bigger, louder, smellier. It had buildings that went up instead of out, and people who walked fast and looked straight ahead and never, ever stopped to look at a snake.
She found work washing dishes in a restaurant on the edge of downtown, in a neighborhood she could not pronounce and did not try to. She lived in a room above a laundromat that smelled of detergent and damp concrete. Every night, she slept with the cloth bag under her pillow. Every morning, she woke up and went to work and washed dishes and said nothing.
Sometimes, in the night, she would take the tumor out of the bag and hold it in her hand and feel its weight and its rough, calcified surface, and she would think about the snake and the pit and the ceiling collapsing, and she would wonder if she had done the right thing.
Not about the snake. She knew what she had done to the snake. She had watched it die under a mountain of rock, and she had done nothing to stop it, and that was a fact, and facts do not change.
She wondered about the miners. Dale. Whether he had made it to the swamp or whether the swamp had taken him, the way it takes everything eventually. Whether he had a wife and whether he had told her he loved her. Whether any of it mattered.
She did not know the answers. She was good at not knowing things. It was one of the advantages of silence.
She put the tumor back in the bag. She went back to sleep. Tomorrow, she would wash dishes. Tomorrow, she would say nothing. Tomorrow would be the same as today, and today was the same as yesterday, and that was the way of things in a world that had never asked you whether you wanted to be part of it.
