I.

The drought in 1954 was the kind of drought that made the sky look like it had been painted white by a careless hand. Silas Mercer stood in his cornfield and watched the last green leaf curl and brown and break apart in a wind that was not wind but heat moving impatiently across dying things.

He was thirty-four years old and had inherited four acres of land that had belonged to his family since the 1880s and was currently worth less than the seed that had been planted in it. The land was in the flat part of Mississippi, where the soil used to be good and the rain used to come on schedule and the Mercer name meant something to the people who lived within a ten-mile radius. It did not mean anything now except that Silas's father had died poor and his father's father had died before that, and the land had gotten smaller with each generation while the people who owned the land around them had gotten bigger.

Silas dug because there was nothing else to do. The well was dry—a foot of wet dirt and then six feet of dust. He was not digging for water. He was digging because his hands needed something to do and the earth was the only thing that would not argue with him or ask him questions or tell him that he was wasting his time.

The shovel struck something that was not earth and was not stone. It was metal, and it was curved, and it was about the size of a man's palm. Silas knelt and brushed away the dirt with his fingers and revealed a ring: a metal ring, tarnished almost to black but unmistakably a ring, with marks on its surface that were not decorative. He pushed the door open with a stick and descended.

The basement was small—perhaps six feet by eight feet—and contained a stone altar, a pile of coins that had fused together by the weight of one another, and a stack of papers wrapped in oilcloth that had, against all odds, preserved their contents from the Mississippi humidity.

The papers told the story of Isaiah Mercer, Silas's great-grandfather, and Isaiah's story was not the story that the town of Mercer's Crossroads told. The town told the story of a hardworking man who built a cotton empire and raised six children and died of natural causes at the age of seventy-two. The papers told the story of a man who hated cotton and the thing that made cotton possible and was killed for saying so.

Isaiah Mercer had not been a slave owner. He had been a man who had inherited a plantation from his father and had spent every penny of his inheritance trying to free the people who worked it. The town discovered Silas's digging three weeks after he found the basement. The sheriff came first—a polite visit, a question about what he was doing on land that had been quiet for seventy years. Then came Mayor Whitfield, whose great-grandfather had been one of the men who had lynched Isaiah Mercer in 1856. The mayor was polite too, but his politeness had a weight to it, a pressure behind the words: "Son, some things are better left buried. Your great-grandfather was a troubled man. Don't follow in his trouble."

That night, Silas's barn burned. It was ruled an accident—a faulty electrical wire, the fire marshal said. Silas knew it was not an accident. He stood in the driveway and watched the barn burn and did not try to put it out, because there was nothing left in the barn that he wanted saved, and because he understood, for the first time in his life, that the world contained men who would burn things rather than let them be known.

He lost the barn. He lost the last of his cotton crop, which had been sitting in the barn waiting for a buyer who would never come. He kept the ring. He kept the papers.

III.

The next morning, Silas took the papers to the courthouse in the county seat. He walked the six miles in the August heat, the papers wrapped in oilcloth against his chest, the ring in his pocket against his leg. The courthouse was a white building with columns that had been painted white in 1920 and were peeling in places where the sun hit them hardest.

He did not go to the sheriff. He did not go to the mayor. He went to a newspaper—the Clarion-Herald, the only paper within twenty miles—and gave the papers to a woman named Ruth Calloway who read them and then read them again and then looked at Silas with an expression that was not sympathy and not pity and not belief and not disbelief but something harder and more useful than all of them: attention.

Ruth called the state newspaper. The state newspaper called a bureau in Jackson. The bureau called the NAACP. The NAACP called a historian in Chicago who flew down within four days and spent three weeks in Silas's basement taking photographs and making copies and asking questions that Silas could not answer because Silas was a farmer and farmers are trained to answer questions about soil and rain and cotton and nothing else.

The story ran in the Clarion-Herald on a Saturday morning, on page four beneath an advertisement for a used Ford truck. It ran in the Jackson paper on Monday. It ran in the Chicago Tribune on Wednesday. By Friday, there were reporters at Silas's door, men in suits and women in dresses and cameras and microphones and questions in a language that Silas understood poorly because the questions were not about soil or rain or cotton but about race and history and truth, and Silas knew truth the way a man knows the weight of a sack of potatoes—by lifting it and feeling what it does to his shoulders.

The town turned against him. Not the violent kind of turning that Isaiah had turned against—the burning, the lynching, the midnight visitors with masked faces. This was a quieter turning, the turning of doors closing and conversations stopping and shopkeepers looking away. Mayor Whitfield's son, a man Silas had played baseball with as a boy, did not speak to him at all. He simply stopped coming to the general store on the corner where Silas bought his nails and his coffee and his kerosene.

IV.

In the spring of 1956, Silas Mercer used the six hundred gold coins—now worth considerably more than their face value, now worth enough to buy more than four acres—to build a school.

Not a plantation house. Not a warehouse. A school. A one-room building on the site of the old plantation, constructed with lumber that Silas cut himself and a foundation that a mason from Jackson supervised and a roof that his neighbour—a white neighbour who had not spoken to him in six months—came to help him raise, wordlessly, with two other men who had also not spoken to him.

The first child to enroll was a girl named Sarah—no relation to anyone Silas had ever known, just a name her mother gave her. She was seven years old, the daughter of a sharecropper family who lived three miles east of the school. She came with her mother, and the mother held her hand tightly, not tightly enough to suggest fear but tightly enough to suggest that letting go was something that had to be practiced.

Silas stood at the door and watched the girl walk into a room that had been a cotton field six months ago and was now a classroom with a blackboard and twelve desks and a stove that Silas had bought used from a woman in Natchez.

"Welcome," he said. He did not know what else to say.

The girl looked at him with dark eyes that were older than seven years and said, very clearly, "Thank you, Mr. Mercer."

That evening, the full moon rose over the flat land of Mississippi and cast a silver light across the schoolhouse and the cornfield that would never be planted and the basement beneath the floorboards where the ring sat on a shelf next to Isaiah's papers. Silas sat in the dark room, the ring in his hands, and he did not try to read the marks on its surface. He had learned that some things are not meant to be read. They are meant to be carried.

He sat there until dawn.

The ring did not glow. But the moonlight on its surface made it look, for a moment, like it was holding something inside it—something small and bright and alive, like a seed waiting for rain.
