She submitted the Aurora pitch on Monday morning.

Not through Victoria. Not through Nathan. She submitted it directly to the client, Aurora's founder, a woman named Patricia Wells who ran the company from a converted barn in Vermont and had never once set foot in a Manhattan office.

The email was three sentences long:

"Patricia -- I wrote something about your brand that I think you should read. If you don't like it, fire me. If you do, maybe you'll understand why I wrote it."

"Nobody," Mia said. "Just the girl in the corner cubicle."

The campaign launched three weeks later. It was the most talked-about beauty marketing campaign of the year. It ran in Vogue, in Elle, in every major publication that mattered. It made Aurora's revenue triple overnight. And at the center of it all, sitting in her corner cubicle with ink-stained fingers and a heart that refused to be quiet, was Mia Donovan.

ACT IV: THE ECHO

Nathan promoted Mia to Senior Creative Director on a Tuesday. Victoria resigned on a Wednesday. She did not give a reason. She just packed her desk, walked past Mia's cubicle one last time, and said, very quietly, "I hope it was worth it."

Mia did not answer. She was too busy looking at the business card Nathan had given her. It said: MIA DONOVAN, SENIOR CREATIVE DIRECTOR. The letters were embossed. They caught the light the way her face had caught the firelight at Thornfield Hall -- or was that a different life? A different woman?

She did not smile. Not then. She turned away from the window and went back to her desk, where twelve more pages of writing were waiting.

The work would keep. The city would keep. The years would keep. And in a glass tower on Midtown Manhattan, a woman who had spent her life being nobody learned, slowly, how to be someone.
