"Mommy," Willow signed. Then, hesitantly, testing the shape of the word in the air: "Happy."
Alex looked at her daughter—Stephanie's daughter, who was becoming Alex's daughter in every way that mattered—and felt something in her chest unclench. A small movement. A quiet, unobtrusive loosening of a knot that had been there for a year and a half and that would probably never fully dissolve.
"Yes," Alex said. "Happy."
Willow believed her. That was enough.
