"Ellen Corwin."

Ellen felt something cold settle in her chest. "So you altered Patrick's letter to hurt me."

"I altered it to hurt the Corwins," Sal said. "Patrick Corwin happens to be your fiancé. That's unfortunate."

"Unfortunate," Ellen repeated. The word was so small for what it carried.

She stood up. She looked at Sal—really looked at him—and she saw not a monster but a man. A small, bitter, broken man who had spent twenty years nursing a grudge and had finally found someone to punish for something that was not his fault.

It was almost pathetic.

"What will you do?" Sal asked.

Ellen thought about it. She could destroy him. She could give Jimmy the ledger, the evidence, everything. Sal would go to prison. Rosa would be implicated. The Vitale operation would collapse.

But would it bring back her right arm? Would it undo the pipe? Would it make Frank love her?

No.

"I'm going to take the original letter," Ellen said. "I'm going to go to Washington. And I'm going to finish what Patrick started."

She turned and walked out of the office. She did not look back.

She reached Washington three days later. Patrick was living in a small apartment near Capitol Hill, working his first day at the IRS on Monday. He was nervous and excited and terrified.

Ellen found him at a diner on Pennsylvania Avenue. She sat across from him and placed the original letter on the table.

Patrick read it. He read it twice. Then he looked at Ellen—really looked at her—and he saw the stub where her right arm should have been.

"Ellen," he said. His voice broke.

"Don't," she said. "Don't say sorry. Don't say anything. Just tell me—do you still want me to come with you?"

Patrick looked at her. He thought about the life he had planned: a small apartment, a steady job, a woman who had suffered unimaginably and was still sitting across from him asking if she could come home.

"Yes," he said. "God yes."

Ellen nodded. She picked up her bag. She stood up.

"Then let's go home," she said.

They left Washington on a Tuesday. The rain had stopped. The sky was the color of wet concrete. Ellen sat by the window on the train and watched the landscape change from city to suburb to countryside. She rested her head against the glass and closed her eyes.

Her right arm still ached. It would always ache. But for the first time in eight months, she did not mind.
