The Cotton and the Engine

Mississippi, 1954. The heat rose from the earth like a physical thing, a weight that pressed down on Silas Beauregard's shoulders and made his breath come shallow. He stood on the platform at the engine construction site, watching the workers move like ants beneath the colossal metal mountain that was Engine Site Mississippi-42. It rose eleven thousand meters into the sky, its喷口 pointing at the heavens like a finger accusing God.

"Y'all gonna stand there all day, or y'all gonna help?"

Silas turned. The woman who spoke was black, maybe fifty years old, with hands like leather and eyes like flint. She wore coveralls that had seen better decades, and she carried a wrench that looked heavy enough to be a weapon.

"I'm Silas Beauregard," he said.

"I know who you are," she said. "Big Mama Thompson. Mechanic. You're here to maintain the fuel systems, ain't ya?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Well, stop starin' at the sky and start lookin' at the pipes. They ain't gonna fix themselves."

The crew was assembled from the discarded pieces of American history. Silas Beauregard, descendant of plantation owners who had owned human beings. Big Mama Thompson, descendant of the people who had been owned. Reverend Ezekiel Moore, a black preacher who had been a prisoner of war in Korea and had come home with holes in his soul that no amount of prayer could fill. And Miss Lillian Duval, a white noblewoman whose family's plantation had gone bankrupt during the war, her father dead, her mother insane, her future a void where hope used to be.

They were all broken. They were all discarded. And they were all being sent to push the Earth out of the solar system.

"The sun is dying," the United Government had told them. "In four hundred years, it will expand and consume the Earth. We are building engines to push the planet to Proxima Centauri. Four point three light years. It will take four hundred years. But we will get there."

Silas did not believe them. Not entirely. But he believed enough. He believed that staying meant death, and that leaving, no matter where they went, meant at least a chance.

The first year on the engine site was hell. The heat was unbearable, the work was brutal, and the tensions between the crew members were worse. Silas and Big Mama argued constantly. He was a Beauregard, and she was a Thompson, and in the history of the South, those names meant nothing but blood and pain.

"You think I don't know what your family did?" Big Mama said one afternoon, wiping sweat from her brow with the back of her hand. "I know. My grandfather was owned by a Beauregard. He was worked to death in the cotton fields. I know."

Silas did not answer. He could not. The truth was a stone in his throat.

"My grandfather died so your family could wear fine clothes and drink fine wine," Big Mama said. "And now you're standing here, tellin' me we're all in this together. Well, I don't believe it. I don't believe any of it."

Reverend Moore stepped between them. "Children," he said. "We are all children of God. And God does not care about your family names. He cares about your hearts."

Big Mama spat on the ground. "I ain't got no heart, Reverend. I got anger. And I got a wrench. And I ain't afraid to use either one."

The conflict between the Ship Faction and the Earth Faction grew more violent with each passing year. The Ship Faction believed humanity should build arks—massive generation ships—to flee to other star systems. The Earth Faction, led by the United Government, insisted that only the planet itself could sustain a viable ecosystem. The glass sphere argument, as it came to be known, was taught in every school: a sealed glass globe containing shrimp, algae, and bacteria, designed to sustain itself indefinitely. It died in twelve days. "Too small," the teachers would say. "Even the largest ark would be too small."

But belief is a fragile thing. And history is heavier than belief.

Silas watched Miss Lillian Duval try to learn how to operate the engine controls. She was clumsy, frustrated, angry. She had spent her life being told that she was better than everyone else, and now she was being told that she was nothing. The transition was painful.

"Why are you helping me?" she asked him one evening, as they sat on the edge of the construction site, watching the sun set over the Mississippi delta.

"Because you need to learn," Silas said.

"I don't need to learn. I need to understand why I'm here. Why any of us are here. My family built this state. My family built this country. And now I'm supposed to stand here and push a rock through space like it's nothing?"

Silas looked at her. She was young, maybe twenty-five, with eyes full of fear and anger and a desperate, clawing need to understand a world that had no place for her. "Your family built this state on the backs of people who were not allowed to read or write or vote or be human," he said. "You're not supposed to feel comfortable here. You're supposed to feel angry. You're supposed to feel guilty. And then you're supposed to do something about it."

Lillian stared at him. Tears ran down her face, but she did not wipe them away. "I don't know how to do that," she said.

"Neither do I," Silas said. "But we're figuring it out. Together."

The Escape Era began. The engines fired at full power, pushing the Earth away from the sun, toward the outer reaches of the solar system. Silas was in his forties now, his body worn by decades of labor, but his spirit slowly healing. He stood on a platform in the Mississippi engine complex, watching the engines burn, and he thought of Big Mama, and Reverend Moore, and Lillian, and all the others who had given everything for this moment.

Big Mama stood beside him. She was older now, her hair gray, her hands scarred from years of work, but her eyes were still bright. "Do you think we'll make it?" she asked.

"To Proxima?" Silas asked.

"To anywhere," she said. "To a place where we can be human. Where we can be free."

Silas looked at her. He saw in her face the same desperate hope that had driven him for thirty years. "Yes," he said. "We will make it. Because we have to. Because we're not done yet."

The long journey through interstellar space consumed generations. Silas lived to see his great-grandchildren born on the moving Earth—children who had never known a rotating planet, who had never felt the pull of gravity as anything but a constant, unchanging force. They called the engines their gods, and they worshipped them with a fervor that Silas found both comforting and terrifying.

He died in the thirty-second year of the Escape Era, at the age of one hundred and one. He died in his bed, in a small apartment in the Mississippi engine complex, with a photograph of Big Mama on his nightstand and the sound of Reverend Moore's preaching playing softly from a radio in the next room. He closed his eyes, and he smiled, and he did not open them again.

The Earth arrived after four hundred and twelve years of travel. The engines slowed. The planet settled into orbit around the red dwarf star. And Silas Beauregard's great-granddaughter, a young woman named Keisha who had never known her great-great-grandfather but had heard his name whispered in stories, stepped out of the habitat dome and onto the surface of a new world.

She expected gray. She expected barren rock. She expected a world that could not sustain human life.

What she found was red.

Not much. Not yet. But there was atmosphere—thin, but breathable with filters. There was water—liquid water, flowing in small streams across the surface. There was life—microscopic, yes, but alive. And there was the sun, a red dwarf star that cast everything in a warm, crimson light, like the glow of a Southern sunset over cotton fields.

Keisha stood there for a long time, staring at the horizon, and she thought of Silas, and Big Mama, and Reverend Moore, and Lillian, and all the others who had died to bring humanity to this place. Four generations of sacrifice. Four hundred years of suffering. And it was worth it.

She opened her mouth and sang. Her voice was like the wind over cotton fields—rough and beautiful and full of pain and hope. And the wind carried her song across the new world, a song of survival and reconciliation and the unbreakable spirit of a people who had refused to die.

Behind her, the habitat dome glowed faintly in the red light, a fragile bubble of warmth and air in a universe that had finally, after four hundred years, made room for human beings. She turned and walked back inside, and she smiled, and she began to tell the story.
