The Harlem Echo

ACT I

The band struck up a ragtime number and Nell Fitzgerald opened her mouth and let the music pour out like honey through broken glass. The long Island ballroom was full of people in white dresses and silk suits, dancing under crystal chandeliers that cost more than most Americans earned in a lifetime. Nell did not belong here. She knew it. The man in the corner with the camera knew it. And so did Mr. Calloway, the talent scout from Columbia Records, who had "found" her at a Harlem club six months ago and immediately begun telling her who to wear, when to smile, and which men to let buy her champagne.

"Miss Fitzgerald," Calloway said, appearing at her side as she finished her song. "A word with our benefactor?"

He nodded toward the VIP table, where a man in his early thirties was watching her with an expression that might have been admiration or might have been something closer to hunger. Sebastian Cross was a Cross--Wall Street Cross, the kind of name that opened doors in Manhattan and made waiters straighten their spats. He was also a veteran of the Great War, though you would never guess it from the way he stood: perfectly still, perfectly composed, like a man who had learned to be still and composed while the world burned around him.

Nell went to the table because Calloway was watching and because she needed the job and because something about Sebastian's eyes made her want to know what he was thinking.

"Miss Fitzgerald," Sebastian said, rising. "You have a voice that could stop a war."

"Or start one, Mr. Cross," Nell said.

He smiled. "I was thinking of stopping one."

He invited her to dance. She said she didn't dance with men like him. He said he wasn't a man like that. She said everyone was. He said he wanted to prove her wrong.

They danced. He was surprisingly good--military training had taught him rhythm, and rhythm was what jazz was all about. When the song ended, he said: "I have a proposition for you."

"Let me guess. Champagne?"

"No. A contract. Three words: fake engagement."

ACT II

Six months. That was the term. Nell would be Sebastian's fiancee for six months, attending society events, enduring the attentions of his aunt Beatrice--a woman whose jewelry cost more than Nell's entire block in Harlem--and then announcing the end of the engagement, at which point Beatrice would stop trying to arrange Sebastian's marriage to the daughter of some senator from Ohio.

"Why me?" Nell asked.

"Because you're the only person I know who can look at a room full of socialites and not feel intimidated. And because when you sang tonight, you looked like you were crying."

She had been crying. Not visibly--no one had seen it--but inside, the way you cry when you're tired of being tired. Her father, Giuseppe, had called three weeks ago from Philadelphia. He needed money. He always needed money. Five years ago he had taken the savings her mother left when she died and disappeared into the Italian district with a poker game and a lie. Nell hadn't heard from him since.

She signed the contract.

Harlem pulled at her every night like a tide. She sang at the Cotton Club and the Savoy and small bars on 125th Street where the air was thick with cigarette smoke and the music was truer than anywhere else in New York. Sebastian came to see her once, sitting in the back row in a dark suit and a quiet face. When she finished, he waited outside.

"You were singing about something tonight," he said.

"My mother," Nell said. "She used to sing. Before the sickness. Before everything went wrong."

Sebastian nodded. "I was in the Argonne. I heard men die. I learned that silence can be louder than any song."

Nell looked at him--really looked--and saw the war in the lines around his eyes. She had seen that look before on the faces of men coming off the boats from Ellis Island: hollow, searching, trying to remember how to be alive.

ACT III

Beatrice Cross discovered the contract on a Sunday in October. She found it in Sebastian's desk drawer, where Nell had carelessly left it while looking for a hairpin. The document was typed on heavy paper, signed in Sebastian's precise hand, outlining the terms of Nell's six-month deception.

Beatrice called Nell into the drawing room of the Crosstown mansion on East 72nd Street and laid the paper on the coffee table like a dead bird.

"Is this true?" she asked. "You are pretending to be my nephew's fiancee?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"For money?"

"Yes, ma'am."

Beatrice closed her eyes. "I understand. You are a colored woman in a white world. Money is the only language either of us speaks fluently." She opened her eyes. "But here is what you need to understand: if my nephew falls in love with you--and I see signs that he may, which would complicate matters enormously--this contract will be used against you. Every society paper in New York will print that you were bought."

Nell felt something break inside her, but she kept her face still. "I understand."

Then her father appeared. Giuseppe Fitzgerald, aged fifty-two and still wearing the same greed that had carried him across the country for thirty years, showed up at the Cotton Club and told a reporter that his daughter was a "tart who dances for white men's amusement" and had "no honor, no religion, no decency." The story ran in the morning paper under the headline: "HARLEM SINGER'S ROGUE FATHER SPEAKS OUT."

Sebastian found Nell in her apartment on 135th Street, sitting on the edge of her bed with the newspaper on her lap and no makeup on. She looked younger without it. Eighteen, maybe.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"Are you?" Nell asked. "Or are you sorry this affects your plan?"

Sebastian sat beside her. Not too close. Close enough. "I'm sorry your father is a bastard," he said. "And I'm sorry you have to carry that."

ACT IV

They left New York on a Tuesday in November. Nell packed a suitcase with two dresses, her mother's piano roll, and a letter from Sebastian that said: "Meet me in Harlem. Bring your voice."

They took a train south, past the factories and the fields and the places where America looked like it had given up on itself. Nell watched the countryside go by and thought about what "home" meant. Was it the apartment on 135th Street? The Cotton Club? Or was it a person?

Sebastian drove them to Harlem--the real Harlem, not the version Beatrice showed tourists on Fifth Avenue. He parked outside the Savoy and said: "I'm done with Wall Street. I'm done with my aunt's drawing rooms. I'm done pretending that money is anything other than noise."

Nell got out of the car. The Savoy was loud inside--jazz pouring out of every doorway, people dancing on the sidewalk, a trumpet player on the corner who made the night itself sway.

"What do you say?" Sebastian asked. "Want to hear me try to dance?"

Nell laughed. It was the first time she had laughed without feeling guilty in five years. "You can't dance, Mr. Cross."

"Then teach me."

They danced on the sidewalk outside the Savoy, a white man from Wall Street and a colored woman from Harlem, and nobody cared because the music was too good and the night was too young and something new was being born in the space between them.

The Harlem Echo, they called it--the sound that travels further than you expect, returning to you changed but recognizable, like a voice you thought you had lost.
