The gas came at four in the morning, which was unlucky because four in the morning was when the world was most honest about what it wanted to be.

Thomas Cassidy knew this because he had been standing in a trench outside Argonne when the sky turned green and the world stopped being a place where men could be men and became instead a place where men could only die.

He was nineteen. He had joined the Signal Corps because he thought wires and telegraphs were the closest thing to magic that a human being could touch. He was right about the magic. He was wrong about the closest thing.

The gas didn't feel like much at first -- a sweet taste on the tongue, like poisoned honey. Then the lungs remembered what air was supposed to feel like and began to protest. Cassidy dropped his coil of telephone wire and fell to his knees in the mud.

His entire unit was around him. Thirty-two men. He knew all their names. He knew that Private Miller from Pittsburgh was writing his first letter to a girl he'd met at a dance. Cassidy heard Harrington on the radio one evening, sitting on the barn floor with a beer and his trembling hands cupped around the warm glass, and he felt something he hadn't felt since Argonne.

Not fear. Anger.

He went to see Father Okafor the next day. "How much do we need to finish the transmitter?"

Father Okafor did the math on a napkin. "Forty-seven thousand dollars. We have eleven."

Cassidy nodded. "Then we need thirty-six thousand more."

"How?"

Cassidy thought about it. "We ask every veteran in New York State."

They did. They went to every veterans hall, every American Legion post, every church and community center where former soldiers had gathered. Cassidy spoke -- not eloquently, not with the polished rhetoric of a politician, but with the raw, unvarnished honesty of a man who had watched his friends die and believed that their deaths had to mean something.

"You're asking me to give money to a woman's star project," a Korean War veteran said at a hall in Syracuse. "I lost my legs in Korea. I can't even get a ramp at the VA."

Cassidy sat down next to him. "I lost my hands," he said. "Not literally. But my hands are broken. And if Dr. Richardson succeeds, the world her machine builds might be one where a man with broken hands can still do something useful. That's what I'm asking you to buy. Not a machine. A world where broken men still matter."

The veteran was silent for a long time. Then he reached into his wallet, pulled out a crumpled five-dollar bill, and placed it on the table. "Tell her to aim that laser straight."

By the seventh year, they had the money. By the eighth year, the transmitter was complete.

It stood in the barn like a cathedral instrument -- brass and glass and steel, rising thirty feet to a ceiling that had been reinforced with beams salvaged from a demolished church. The laser sat at its center, a cylinder of crystal and precision, humming with potential.

Cassidy closed his eyes and listened.

When Richardson played back the data, it was exactly what they had sent. Not a message from aliens. Not a miracle. Just their own data, reflected back across the void, proving that distance was not an obstacle but a bridge.

Cassidy opened his eyes. Richardson was crying -- not dramatically, not for anyone's benefit, but quietly, the way people cry when something they have carried for seven years finally becomes real.

They stood together at the top of the transmitter, looking out over the Ithaca countryside at the starlit sky.

"We did it," Richardson whispered.

Cassidy shook his head gently. "No. We just proved we can. The real work starts now."

He looked up at the stars and thought of the thirty-two men.

"We're not escaping Earth," he said. "We're coming home."
