Magnolia and Ash
The magnolias at Magnolia House were dead. This was not a metaphor. They were literally, botanically dead—brown and brittle and hanging from branches that looked like someone had frozen them mid-gesture. Clementine Beauregard stood in the garden every morning at seven and looked at them, and every morning she told herself she would cut them down, and every morning she didn't. Magnolia House was a two-story white plantation house in the middle of nothing in Claiborne County, Mississippi. It had eight rooms upstairs and eight downstairs and a porch that wrapped around three sides and a foundation that was slowly sinking into the red clay like a ship going to sea. It had once belonged to a man named Josiah Beauregard who had built it in 1872 and had owned three hundred acres of cotton and forty-seven human beings. Josiah was Clementine's great-great-grandfather. Clementine was Josiah's only living descendant. The land had been whittled down to ninety-two acres by taxes and bad years and a grandfather who preferred his whiskey to his account books. Clementine was twenty and she was the poorest rich girl in Claiborne County. Her grandfather, Henry Beauregard III—Old Man Henry, as the neighbors called him—sat in the room at the end of the upstairs hall and talked to his dead wife. Clementine heard him sometimes, through the floorboards, saying things like "Clara, the tea is cold again" and "Clara, I think it's going to rain." She never went up to check on him. Old保姆 Mrs. Gable handled that. Mrs. Gable had been with the Beauregards since before Clementine was born and was the only person in the house who seemed to know what she was doing. On Wednesdays, Thomas Callahan drove up from Jackson. Thomas was Clementine's fourth cousin once removed—related through a branch of the family tree that had moved to Jackson and gone into law. He was forty-five, divorced, and wore suits the way other people wore pajamas: because he hadn't thought about what he was putting on in the morning. He came every Wednesday to handle the "legal matters" of Magnolia House: property taxes, mortgage payments, the occasional letter from a lawyer about something Clementine couldn't be bothered to read. She thought Thomas was boring. Not in a cruel way—in the way you think a wall is boring. It's functional, it's solid, it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do, and you would never invite it to dinner. The engagement to Caleb Dunbar had been arranged by their mothers. This was not dramatic—it was just the way things worked in Claiborne County. When he spoke, his voice was so low she had to lean forward to hear it. "The Worthington family dissolved its trust in 1968. The documents were filed in Jackson. I was the attorney who filed them." The lamp flickered. The wind moved through the house and made the floorboards creak. Clementine felt the room tilt slightly, the way it did when she stood up too fast. "You knew," she said. "You always knew." "I knew that the land wasn't legally Beauregard property. I chose not to tell you because—" He stopped. Started again. "Because I didn't want you to feel like your entire life was a mistake." She stared at him. "My life isn't a mistake." "I know that. But the world doesn't work the way you think it does, Clementine. The world works the way the law says it does. And the law says this land never belonged to your family." "What am I supposed to do with that?" He looked at her—really looked at her—and for the first time, she saw the full weight of what he was carrying. Five years of silence. Five years of driving every Wednesday to a house full of dead people and a living girl who thought he was boring, because boring was safer than telling her the truth. Five years of loving a woman who was dead and feeling guilty for continuing to breathe. "You do what you've always done," he said. "You live here. You take care of your grandfather. "Now it's just another secret this house is keeping." She stood up. She walked to the door. She stood in the hallway and looked back at him—one man in a parlor with a fireplace and a house full of ghosts, trying to be boring and failing. "Why did you burn it?" she asked. "Because if I hadn't, you would have used it to fight a war you couldn't win. And I didn't want to watch you lose." She went upstairs to her room and stood in front of the mirror and looked at herself—a girl in a yellowing dress with dirt on her shoes and a letter burning in a fireplace downstairs and a fiancé who wanted to buy her problems and a house that was sinking into the ground. Then she went back downstairs. She walked through the parlor where Thomas sat by the fire. She walked out the front door. She walked through the garden. She walked to the small living magnolia near the well and knelt down and put her hands in the cold earth and dug. She dug until her fingers were raw and the hole was deep enough for a sapling. She took the small magnolia tree out of the ground—carefully, carefully—and carried it to the front yard, to the spot where the big dead magnolias stood like soldiers who had forgotten they were at war. She planted it in the center of the dead ones. She packed the earth around the roots. She stood up and looked at the small green thing in the middle of the brown and brittle and thought: this is not a solution. This is not a victory. This is not even a hope. This is just something she had done. And sometimes, in Mississippi, that had to be enough. ============================================================
