Evelyn was twenty-six, aspiring actress, current waitress at the Patsy Diner on Sunset, and person who had received exactly one rejection from every casting director in Hollywood in the thirty days since she had moved to the city. Vivian went undercover through a studio fixer who owed the Bureau a favor. She dined at Victor's restaurant. The food was extraordinary. Victor served her personally. "You are a detective," Victor said, cutting into something that looked like duck breast but tasted like something she could not name. Not a question. A statement. Vivian did not deny it. "You are a woman who does not trust men," he continued. "That makes us the same. We both know the world is full of wolves wearing suits."

The truth emerged slowly, like fog rolling in from the Pacific: Victor's restaurant served a specific dish to specific guests. The dish was made from women who were already dead or would be, if Vivian was any good at her job. Victor was not the murderer. He was the consumer. The murderers were someone in the audience: the powerful men who attended his dinners and provided the special ingredients through their own predation. Victor simply recycled what they wasted. He turned their crimes into art. He turned their victims into sustenance.

Vivian realized she had two choices: expose Victor and lose the evidence against the men who were actually killing, or let Victor continue and save the women who might still be saved. There was no right answer. There was never a right answer in a noir. There was only the answer you could live with, and the answer you could write down in a report.

She sat in her apartment at dawn, sunlight filtering through cheap blinds, a file on her kitchen table: names, dates, hotel receipts. It was enough to destroy a dozen powerful men. It was also enough to destroy her career, her reputation, the fragile sense that she was doing good in a world that mostly did good by accident.

Victor sent her a bottle of wine and a note: You know what I am. Now decide what you are. She drank the wine. It was excellent. She opened the file. She started writing.

Detective Vivian Cross sat at her kitchen table in the early morning light, writing a report that would either save the city or end her career, drinking wine that tasted like victory and defeat mixed together so thoroughly that she could not tell them apart.
