Gilded Mirages
The champagne flute was taller than Ginny's wrist. She held it by the stem because that's what you did at a Long Island party -- you held things by the stem, you smiled with your mouth closed, and you pretended the music wasn't coming from a phonograph in the corner and the people laughing weren't laughing at nothing.
She was twenty-five and twenty pounds heavier than the women standing around her in their flapper dresses and cloche hats, and she had learned by now that her body was the first thing everyone noticed and the last thing anyone mentioned.
"You look radiant, dear," said a woman whose necklace cost more than Ginny's father had earned in his entire career as a dockworker in Cork. "Is that a new shade of rouge?"
"It's called 'rose,' Mrs. Harrington," Ginny said, and smiled the smile her mother had taught her: small, polite, not too eager.
The woman patted her cheek and moved on. Ginny watched her go, then set down the champagne flute on a passing waiter's tray and picked up a plate of canapes she didn't want.
"You don't have to eat other people's food, you know."
Ginny turned. Richard Van Der Bilt II was standing beside her, holding a cigarette in a long holder, his tuxedo impeccable, his smile perfect. He was beautiful in the way that statues are beautiful -- symmetrical, cold, and utterly indifferent to the world around him.
"I'm not hungry," Ginny said.
"Then why are you eating?"
"Because it gives my hands something to do."
Richard looked at her hands. They were holding a canape the size of a postage stamp. He looked back at her face. "You're different from everyone here."
"That's not a compliment in this room."
"It is to me."
He was standing closer than he needed to be. Ginny could smell his cologne -- something French and expensive. She could hear the music from the phonograph, a jazz band playing something fast and bright that didn't match the mood of the room at all. These people were performing happiness and the jazz band was performing joy, and neither performance was convincing anyone.
"Why are you talking to me?" she asked.
"Because you're the only person here who isn't performing."
Ginny looked around the room. "They're all performing?"
"Everyone except you and me. And I'm better at it."
She laughed. It was a full, warm laugh that made three women turn their heads. Richard smiled -- a real smile this time, one that reached his eyes and changed the way his face was structured.
"What's your name?" he said.
"Genevieve O'Brien. But everyone calls me Ginny."
"I'm Richard. Richard Van Der Bilt the Second."
"I gathered."
He laughed, and this time it was genuine, and Ginny felt something she hadn't felt in a very long time: the sensation of being seen.
Not looked at. Not appraised. Seen.
He asked her to dance. There was no dance floor -- the room was too full -- so they danced where they stood, Richard holding her hand, spinning her once, twice, until Ginny was laughing and the champagne bubbles were rising in her chest and for a moment she wasn't a dockworker's daughter at a Long Island party. She was just a woman dancing with a man who had looked at her and decided she was interesting.
It didn't last. Nothing at that party lasted. But Ginny carried the memory of it with her for six months, turning it over in her mind like a coin, until she stopped wondering if it had been real and started wondering if it ever would be again.
It was.
Richard appeared at her aunt's restaurant in Manhattan three weeks after the party. He wore a suit that was too expensive for a neighborhood restaurant and a smile that was exactly the right price.
"May I sit?" he said.
Aunt Maeve peeked out from the kitchen. "You're the man from the party," she said, not a question.
"I am."
"Sit. Eat. Ginny, stop hiding and come out here."
Ginny emerged from the kitchen wearing her apron and her "I'm fine, really" expression. Richard stood when he saw her. "Good evening."
"Good evening."
"You work here?"
"I help."
"Help is doing." Richard pulled out a chair. "May I help too?"
He ordered the most expensive thing on the menu and ate it with the same serious attention he would have given a business contract. He asked Ginny questions about her life: where she had grown up, what she liked to do, whether she ever sang.
"I sing sometimes," Ginny said.
"When?"
"When nobody's listening."
"That's the best time to sing."
He came back the next week. And the next. He brought flowers -- not roses, not lilies, but wildflowers from a patch by the Hudson that he had picked himself. "They're not elegant," he said, handing her a bunch of daisies. "But they're honest."
Ginny took them to the kitchen and put them in a jar of water and they lasted three days, which was longer than most of the relationships she had seen in this neighborhood.
Six months later, they were engaged. The society pages called it "an unconventional but charming match." Ginny's aunt called it "about time." Ginny called it a miracle.
The wedding was at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Ginny wore a dress of ivory lace that had been borrowed from a cousin and altered by her aunt's friends. She looked in the mirror before she left and saw a woman who was trying very hard to be someone she wasn't -- thin, delicate, the kind of woman who belonged in a Van Der Bilt family.
Richard took one look at her and said, "You're beautiful."
It was the truest thing he had ever said to her.
The honeymoon was in Lake Placid. It was snowing -- a late spring snow that made the mountains look like they were wearing sugar. Richard held her hand and pointed out the peaks and told her stories about growing up in this house, that house, with that family.
"My grandmother used to say that the Van Der Bilt name is like a coat," he said. "It's warm, but it's also heavy. You wear it your whole life and you forget you're wearing it until someone takes it off you."
"Would you like someone to take it off you?"
Richard looked at her over the rim of his coffee cup. "I don't know," he said honestly. "I think I've worn it so long I can't feel it anymore."
Ginny reached across the table and took his hand. "Then I'll wear it for you."
He squeezed her fingers. It was a promise. She thought it was a love letter.
It was neither.
The truth came out on their first anniversary. Richard had been drinking -- something he rarely did, which made it more dangerous. They were in their Westchester house, a modern thing of glass and steel that Richard's father had built for them "because traditional architecture doesn't suit young people."
"I want to tell you something," Richard said, sitting on the edge of the bed in the dark. "Something you deserve to know."
Ginny was brushing her hair. She stopped. "Okay."
"I didn't marry you because I love you."
The brush stopped in her hand. "I know that."
"You do?"
"We arranged this marriage. Your father wanted me to marry an 'Irish girl to modernize the family.' I wanted--" He paused, searching. "I wanted a wife who wouldn't challenge me. Who wouldn't demand things I couldn't give."
Ginny set down the brush. "And what can you give?"
Richard was quiet for a long time. The snow was falling outside, muffled by the glass walls. The house was so quiet she could hear the furnace kicking on in the basement.
"I can give you everything except what you want," he said finally. "I can give you this house. This car. This life. But I can't give you--" He stopped. "There's someone I love. I've loved her since we were eighteen. I'm married to you out of duty. And I'm sorry."
Ginny nodded. "I understand."
"You do?"
"Yes." She picked up the brush again and continued brushing her hair. The motions were automatic. Back and forth, back and forth. "I understand perfectly."
Richard got into bed. He turned his back to her. He fell asleep within minutes.
Ginny sat at the vanity and looked at her reflection in the mirror. She was beautiful, in the way that a sunset is beautiful -- large, warm, and ultimately unreachable. You could look at it. You could admire it. But you could not hold it.
She went to bed. She lay on her side of the mattress. She listened to Richard breathe.
And she began, very quietly, to plan her escape.
It did not look like escape. It looked like growth.
Ginny began attending charity events on her own. She went to gallery openings, to Broadway shows, to luncheons with women whose husbands were never home and whose children were always abroad. She built a network of acquaintances who knew her as "Mrs. Van Der Bilt" and nothing more, which was exactly what she wanted.
She started singing again. Not at parties, not for Richard, but in small clubs in Manhattan where nobody knew who she was and nobody cared. She went to a place on 52nd Street where the jazz bands played after midnight and the champagne flowed and nobody judged you for your body or your accent or your father's occupation.
One night, a man at the piano watched her sing from the back of the room. He was thirty and wore his hair in a style that was neither fashionable nor unfashionable but simply his. He had the kind of face that became more interesting the longer you looked at it -- narrow, intelligent, with eyes that missed nothing.
After the set, he came to her. "Your vibrato is natural," he said. "Not many people have that."
"Thank you."
"I'm Alex Mercer. I compose music. I play piano. I'm also the person who's been watching you for six weeks."
Ginny was alarmed. "Six weeks?"
"Six weeks. You come here every Tuesday and Thursday. You sing traditional Irish ballads. You order a whiskey and a soda. You sit in the same chair." He smiled. "You're predictable. It's refreshing."
"I'm not predictable."
"You are. And it's wonderful."
Ginny laughed. "Everyone else calls me unpredictable. Or complicated. Or 'a mystery.'"
"Everyone else is lying to be polite. I'm not."
She liked him immediately.
Alex taught her to sing properly. Not the church hymns her mother had taught her, not the popular songs of the day, but real singing -- the kind that came from the diaphragm, from the chest, from somewhere deep inside that most people never accessed.
"Your voice is an instrument," Alex said during their third lesson, sitting on a bench in a small apartment in Greenwich Village while Ginny stood in front of him and sang a scale. "An instrument needs care. It needs maintenance. It needs someone who understands that the goal isn't to sound perfect. The goal is to sound true."
Ginny sang the final note. It wavered, just slightly, and then settled into something clear and steady and honest.
Alex nodded. "Again."
She sang it again. Better.
Months passed. The seasons changed. Richard came and went, his attention shifting between business and his ex-girlfriend, who was engaged to a British Consul and therefore permanently unavailable. Ginny didn't care. She was singing. She was learning. She was becoming someone who existed outside of Richard's orbit.
One evening, after a particularly good rehearsal, Alex walked her home. The streets of Manhattan were wet from rain, and the neon signs reflected in the puddles like spilled paint.
"I have something to ask you," Alex said.
Ginny stopped walking. "What?"
"Will you let me write a song for you?"
She looked at him. The rain had stopped. The city was breathing around them -- taxis hissing through puddles, a distant siren, the muffled sound of a jazz band from a club three blocks away.
"Why?" she said.
"Because your voice deserves a song that fits it. Not a church hymn. Not a popular tune. A song that's yours."
Ginny thought about it. She thought about Richard, who was probably in his office in the city, writing letters to a woman who wasn't her. She thought about the charity events and the Broadway shows and the empty nights in the Westchester house. She thought about her voice, sitting in her chest like a bird waiting for the cage to open.
"Yes," she said. "Please."
Alex smiled. It was a small smile but it was real, and it was for her, and it was everything that Richard had never been able to give.
They walked the rest of the way in silence. When they reached her building, Alex turned to her. "Goodnight, Ginny."
"Goodnight, Alex."
She went inside. She stood in her bedroom and looked at the glass walls that showed her the city lights and nothing else. She put her hand on the glass and felt the cold.
Then she began to sing.
