The phone rang at 2:47 AM, which was the kind of hour when calls are either emergencies or mistakes. Ray Callahan answered both possibilities in the same breath: "Callahan."

"Ray. It is Elena."

He was sitting at his desk in a fourth-floor office that overlooked a street in downtown Los Angeles that had once been exciting and was now just tired. The desk was a salvaged door on two filing cabinets. The chair was a hotel room chair he had found in a dumpster behind the Biltmore. The view was of a brick wall and a fire escape and a neon sign for a restaurant called El Patio that had been closed for three years and still had the sign on because the landlord was too cheap to replace it.

"Elena Vasquez," he said. "If this is about the Henderson case, I told you — I do not do matrimonial investigations anymore. The money is good but the emotional damage to my liver is not worth it."

"This is not about the Henderson case. This is not about any case."

"Then what is it about?"

"Can you fly?"

He looked at her through the phone, although she was not there and he knew she was not there. Elena Vasquez worked for the Army Security Agency, which meant she was either very important or very bored or both. She had the kind of face that made people tell her things — sharp features, dark eyes, a mouth that looked like it had been designed for silence. He had met her six months ago when she had hired him to find a missing document that turned out to be classified, which meant he had found it and then forgotten he had found it, which was the kind of job that paid well and required no references.

"I can fly," he said. "I am not sure I want to."

"Then do not want to. But can you?"

"Yes. I can fly."

"Good. Because in six hours, I am going to offer you a job that you cannot refuse and that you should absolutely refuse. And I want you to know that I am not going to ask you to refuse it. I am going to present the facts and let you decide."

"What kind of job?"

"The kind that does not appear on any government org chart. The kind where the people who work it do not have badges or pensions or the right to tell their wives where they are on Tuesday nights. The kind that is classified so deeply that if you talk about it, you will not be breaking any law because there is no law to break — there is nothing on the books that acknowledges this work exists."

"Sounds like a government contractor."

"It sounds like a lot of things. It sounds like the end of the life you are currently living. It sounds like the beginning of something that will not have an end because there is no point at which you can say you are done."

Ray poured himself a drink from the bottle on his desk. It was whiskey — the cheap kind that came in a brown bottle and tasted like regret with a hint of smoke. He drank it standing up, the way he had been drinking it for three years.

"What do you want me to do for six hours?" he asked.

"Sleep. You are going to sleep for six hours, and then you are going to come to a hangar in Van Nuys, and you are going to look at a plane that you have never seen before, and you are going to fly it, and then you are going to decide whether this is the kind of work you want to do."

"And if I say no?"

"Then I walk out of your office, you finish your drink, and you go back to looking for wives who are having affairs with their tennis instructors."

"Where do I find you at six hours?"

"I will find you."

She found him at the door of his office, which was more dramatic than either of them would have acknowledged. Elena Vasquez stood in the doorway at 8:47 AM wearing a suit that was either expensive or well-fitted or both, and she looked at Ray the way a surgeon looks at a patient who is about to be told that the thing he has been ignoring is much bigger than he thought.

"Car," she said.

They drove to Van Nuys in silence. Elena drove. Ray watched the city pass — downtown LA with its crumbling art deco buildings, the freeway with its morning traffic, the neighborhoods that had once been exciting and were now just tired. The hangar was on the edge of the Van Nuys airport, in a section of the field that was not on most pilots' maps. "This is B.J.," Elena said.

"Named after what?"

"A code name from your Pacific days. You will remember it. You just do not want to."

Ray walked around the plane slowly, the way a man walks around something that might be alive. "Which record is correct?"

"Both. Neither. It is a government aircraft, which means it belongs to no one and everyone. The question is whether you want to fly it."

"Why me?"

"Because you were in the Pacific. Because you flew the mission that you have never described to anyone. Because you have a talent for reading the air that borders on something supernatural but is probably just trauma sharpening your senses. Because you are a good pilot, Ray, but more importantly because you are a pilot who understands that flying is not about the machine — it is about the relationship between the man and the machine, and that relationship is the only thing that matters when you are ten thousand feet above ocean and the engine starts making noises it should not be making."

Ray put his hand on the wing of the P-47 and felt the metal beneath his palm, cool and solid and real. "What kind of missions?" he asked.

"The kind that the official history will never acknowledge. The kind where the enemies are not always in uniform and the allies are not always honest and the truth is something you carry in your head and cannot put down even when you want to."

"And the risk?"

"Everything."

He climbed into the cockpit. It was smaller than he remembered — P-47 cockpits were not known for their spaciousness — and the controls were different from anything he had flown, modified in ways that were intuitive and untestable. He sat in the seat and put his hands on the controls and closed his eyes and felt the plane beneath him like a man feels the deck of a ship, and he knew, with the certainty of someone who has spent his entire adult life in the air, that this machine was designed for someone like him.

He started the engine. It roared to life with a sound that was deeper and more resonant than any P-47 he had ever heard, and the hangar shook, and Elena stepped back from the door, and Ray pushed the throttle forward and taxied out onto the runway and lifted into the Los Angeles sky and did not look back.

But the reconnaissance images showed something that did not match the surveys — structures, roads, something that had been built and then covered.

Ray flew B.J. over the area at twenty thousand feet, and the modifications showed. The plane climbed faster, flew higher, and handled better than any aircraft had a right to. He photographed everything he could see, and what he saw made no sense — cleared areas in patterns that suggested not human habitation but something else, something that did not fit the agricultural or residential patterns of the region.

The second mission was a search. Three Air Force pilots had disappeared over the past four months — not crashed, not shot down, simply disappeared. Their last transmissions were vague — weather, navigation error, equipment malfunction — the kind of transmissions that pilots file when they are not sure what is happening and do not have time to be sure. Ray flew B.J. over the areas where the last transmissions had originated, and he found something.

Not the pilots. Something worse.

He found an airfield — a small, unmarked field in a valley that was not on any map, with three runways and a cluster of buildings and a fleet of aircraft that included two P-47s that looked exactly like B.J. and a number of other aircraft that he did not recognize. The aircraft were in good condition, freshly maintained, and clearly operational. They were not the aircraft of a rogue element or a smuggler's operation. They were the aircraft of an organized military force that did not appear in any Air Force registry.

Ray photographed everything. He flew back to Van Nuys and delivered the photos to Colonel Voss, a man who looked like he had been carved from granite and disappointment and who had been running the Protocol for longer than Ray had been alive.

Voss looked at the photos for a long time without speaking. Then he said, "You have seen what you were not supposed to see. The question is what you are going to do about it."

"Report it," Ray said.

"To whom?"

"Anyone. The Air Force inspector general. The Pentagon. Anyone."

Voss smiled, and it was not a pleasant expression. "Ray, the men who operate that airfield are the people who sign the orders that keep that airfield flying. They are the people who approve the budgets that pay for aircraft like B.J. They are the people who decide which missions are classified and which are not, and the line between classified and criminal is thinner than most people think."

"Then what do I do?"

"That is the question, isn't it? What do you do when the people who are supposed to protect you are the ones who are doing the protecting?"

Ray thought about it. He thought about his office on the fourth floor, the bottle on the desk, the neon sign that had been off for three years, the life he had been living since the war ended and he had come back to a city that had no use for a man who had seen things that could not be talked about.

"I fly," he said.

Voss nodded. "Yes. You do."

The last mission was not planned. It was not scheduled. It was not on any kind of list. It was a decision that Ray made in the cockpit of B.J. on a night in November when the sky was clear and the city was quiet and the weight of everything he had seen pressed down on him like the gravity at thirty thousand feet.

He called Elena from a payphone outside the Van Nuys hangar. "I am going," he said.

"Going where?"

"Deeper. Into whatever this is. I am not reporting it. I am not running. I am going to find out what is at the center of it, and I am going to keep going until I either find out or I do not come back."

"Ray, that is not a plan. That is a suicide note."

"It is a flight plan."

She was silent for a long time. When she spoke, her voice was quiet in a way that Ray had never heard it. "You know you will not come back, don't you?"

"I know I will not come back the same."

"Is that the same thing?"

"No. But it is close enough."

He hung up and climbed into B.J. and started the engine and taxied onto the runway and lifted into the Los Angeles sky, and as he climbed, the city spread out beneath him like a circuit board, all the lights and streets and buildings connected by invisible threads of money and power and lies, and he flew into the dark beyond those lights, into territory that had no name and no map coordinates, and the only sound was the engine and the wind and the beating of his own heart, which was still beating, which was something.

He did not know where he was going. He knew only that he was going, and that the going was the only thing left that made him feel alive, and that the sky — the vast, indifferent, beautiful sky — was the only place where he could be anyone other than what the world had made him.
