The Civilized Man
I first saw Sebastian Crowe in a café on the Rue de Seine, where he was engaged in what I can only describe as a conversation with a man who was slowly turning the colour of old parchment.
Sebastian was French-speaking, which surprised me. Not because he was American—he wasn't, not exactly. He was Harvard, class of 1918, with a degree in surgery that had made him the youngest resident at Massachusetts General before the war took it all away. But his French was fluent, accentless, the kind of French that suggested a European education that his family had never afforded.
"You're arguing with a man about Nietzsche," I said when he finished and turned to me. "Why?"
"Because Nietzsche is useful," he said. "He tells us what we already know but are too polite to say."
The other man left. He walked quickly, his face still pale, his hands shaking. I watched him go, then looked back at Sebastian. He was pouring coffee from a pot that sat between us like a peace offering.

"What do you need it sharp for?"

Richard Winslow's party was held at the Hotel Crillon, in a ballroom that had been decorated with three thousand white roses and lit by a chandelier that weighed more than most American cars. Winslow was American but lived in Paris now—or at least, he spent six months of every year in Paris, surrounded by European art and European money and European women who didn't ask too many questions.
I was there because Sebastian had invited me. Not with words. With a look. He'd caught my eye across the room, raised his glass slightly, and I'd understood: come talk to me.
He was standing near a pillar, talking to a woman I recognised as the Countess de Montclair, one of Paris's most accomplished social climbers. She was laughing at something he said, and he was smiling the small, controlled smile I'd come to recognise as his version of honesty.
"Sebastian," I said when she drifted away. "Who is she?"
"Nobody important."
"She's the Countess de Montclair."
"Then she's somebody's important." He took a sip of water—always water, never wine—and looked at me. "Lillian, do you believe in civilization?"
"It's an interesting question. Depends on how you define it."
"I think civilization is a story we tell ourselves to feel better about what we do." He set down his glass. "We built hospitals and called them civilization. We built asylums and called them civilization. We built factories where children worked sixteen hours a day and called it progress. But underneath all of it—underneath the opera houses and the museums and the salons—there's still the same animal we've always been."
"That's a very dark view of human nature."
"Is it?" He looked around the ballroom. "Look at them. Winslow over there, negotiating with the French minister. The British ambassador, gambling with his wife's jewellery. The Russian prince, selling his family's paintings to fund his opium habit. These are the people who decide what civilization means. And they're not civilized. They're just well-dressed."
"Then what is?"
He was quiet for a long time. When he spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.
"I don't know. Maybe that's the question. Maybe civilization isn't something you are. Maybe it's something you try to be, and fail at, and try again."

Florence was Sebastian's idea. Or rather, it was my idea that he agreed to.
"I'm writing a piece on the expatriate community," I said. "You're the most interesting expatriate I know. Come to Florence with me. Show me your city."
He didn't have a city in Florence. He had a small apartment near the Ponte Vecchio, second floor, no elevator, a view of the Arno that was beautiful in the way that old wounds are beautiful—sharp and aching and impossible to ignore.
We arrived in October. The leaves were turning, and the river was low, and the city smelled of woodsmoke and bread. Sebastian walked through the streets like a man returning to a place he'd never left, even though he'd been away for five years.
"You know this place well," I said.
"My grandmother was Florentine," he said. "She told me stories. About the Medici. About the plagues. About the people who built this city and the people who destroyed it."
"Which ones do you believe in?"
He stopped on the Ponte Vecchio and looked at the river. "Both. They're the same people, Lillian. The builders and the destroyers. They just use different words."
That night, we sat in his apartment and drank wine—his first drink in as long as I'd known him—and he told me things I hadn't expected.
"I was a surgeon," he said. "Before the war. After the war, I was still a surgeon. The hands don't forget what the mind wants to forget."
"What happened in the war?"
He looked at me. His face was calm, but his hands were shaking. "I saved lives. And I took them. Both with the same instrument. Both for the same reason. Because someone told me to."
"Regret it?"
"No." He set down his glass. "That's the problem. I don't regret it. I understand it. And understanding is worse than regret, because regret means you think you could have done better. Understanding means you know you did exactly what you were supposed to do."
"Then why are you telling me this?"
"Because you're writing about the Lost Generation, and I want you to understand that we weren't lost. We were found. Found out. Found wanting."

The man Sebastian dealt with in Florence was called Marco Bellini. He was a dealer in antiquities—real ones and fake ones, and he couldn't—or wouldn't—tell the difference. He had connections to the black market, to corrupt customs officials, to men who would sell their mothers for the right price.
I didn't meet Bellini. Sebastian told me about him the morning after.
"He was a problem," Sebastian said. He was making coffee in a small metal pot, the kind Italians use and Americans find absurd. "He was selling forged Renaissance sculptures to American museums. Passing them off as authentic. Taking millions of dollars."
"And you decided to deal with it."
"I decided to expose it."
"Did you?"
He didn't answer. He carried the coffee to the table and sat down across from me.
"Lillian," he said, "when I was in the war, I learned something about justice. Justice isn't something that happens in courts. It's something that happens in the space between what people deserve and what they get. Most of the time, that space is empty. Sometimes, someone fills it."
"Are you that someone?"
He smiled. It was the saddest smile I'd ever seen. "I wish I were."

I found the diary in Sebastian's desk three days after he disappeared.

"I am not a judge," he wrote in 1923. "I am not a jury. I am not an executioner. But when the system fails—and it always fails—someone must act. The question is not whether I have the right. The question is whether I have the courage."
The last entry was dated two weeks ago.
"Lillian is here. She is writing about the Lost Generation. She thinks she understands us. She doesn't. We are not lost. We are found. Found out. Found wanting. And yet—yet—we continue. Because the alternative is to admit that civilization is a lie. And I cannot admit that. I will not admit that."

I sat in the café and read the diary twice. Then I ordered another wine and began to write.
