The first time Virginia Hale saw Julian Cross, he was standing on a table in a basement club on Long Island, holding a cocktail glass above his head and declaring that the static between the stars was telling him their names.

The glass did not break. Julian's hand did not shake. The people around him laughed because that is what people do when someone they find mildly entertaining says something that is either brilliant or deranged and nobody can yet tell which.

His eyes were bright in a way that could have been passion or pathology. His hands moved when he spoke with the restless energy of a man whose body was always slightly ahead of his words.

"Can you show me?" she asked.

"People are saying you are crazy," Virginia said. She had heard it from mutual acquaintances, who said it with the gentle condescension reserved for artists who dabbled in science and scientists who dabbled in madness.

Julian did not look up from his machine. "Let them say it. The forest does not care what the trees think."

She went to a party in October—a final, lavish affair at a house in Sands Point that belonged to a man who had made his fortune in bootleg liquor and his reputation in civic philanthropy. There was an orchestra, a fountain flowing with champagne, and a sky full of stars that Julian had insisted on dressing for despite the October chill.

"You do not have to come," Virginia said. "You look miserable."

"I need to be there," he said. "The receiver is in my coat. The frequency is strongest on clear nights. And tonight is clear."

She took his hand. They went.

Silence.

Not the silence of an empty room. The silence of a thing that has been present and then has been removed, leaving a void where it used to be.

"They are not talking to us," Julian said. His voice was quiet but the room was quiet enough that everyone could hear. "They are not greeting us. They are not even looking at us."

He looked at the receiver, then at the people around him—at the women in their silk dresses, the men in their tuxedos, the empty champagne glasses on every table, the orchestra tuning instruments for a morning set that nobody would really hear.

"They are counting us."

He set the receiver on a table. It clicked when it landed, a small sound in a room that had suddenly become very large.

Then he sat down beside Virginia, took her hand, and said nothing more.

At eleven minutes, she heard it. Not a gap. Not a pattern. A change in the texture of the static. A warmth in the cold noise, as though something in the universe had shifted its weight and exhaled.

She sat in Julian's empty apartment with the snow falling outside and the static filling her head and understood, with a certainty that was neither hopeful nor fearful, that the forest was real.

And she was no longer afraid of being alone in it.
