The woman walked into my office on a Tuesday in March 1947. It was raining—LA rain, the kind that doesn't fall so much as hang in the air like a wet sheet. She was wearing a black coat and a black hat and a face that said she had done things she couldn't talk about and didn't want to forget. She sat down without being invited, closed the door, and placed a manila envelope on my desk.
"Find out who's been talking to the stars," she said.
I didn't ask what she meant. In my line of work, you don't ask questions until you've seen the money. She slid a stack of bills across the desk—five hundred dollars in twenties. I counted them without looking at her.
"What's the name?" I asked.
"Vivian Cross. That's all you need to know."

"Who was he talking to?" I asked.
"He wasn't talking," Mrs. Finch said. "He was listening. And whatever he heard, it changed him."
"Changed him how?"
She looked at me with eyes that had stopped crying weeks ago. "He started saying that we're not supposed to be alone. That being alone is worse. That the silence out there—it's not empty. It's full. Full of things that are hiding, and things that are hunting, and things that are waiting. And the worst thing you can do is make a sound."
I took the notebook to a friend at the University of California. He looked at the calculations for an hour and then refused to look at them again. "This is government work," he said. "You need to drop it."
"I'm being paid to look into it."
"Then you're being paid to get yourself killed."
I didn't drop it. I couldn't. The notebook had coordinates pointing to a location in the San Fernando Valley. I went there at night, with a flashlight and a revolver I had borrowed from a cop I owed a favor to. The location was a warehouse with no sign, no lights, no nothing. But inside, behind a locked door that my friend's lockpick opened in thirty seconds, was a room full of equipment that didn't exist in any civilian catalog. Radio transmitters. Signal processors. Telemetry displays. And on the wall, painted in white letters: PROJECT NIGHTFALL.

"Mr. Callahan," a voice said. "I've been expecting you."

"You're trespassing," Morris said.
"I'm doing some investigating."
"On a project you have no clearance for."
"I have a client."
Morris smiled. It wasn't a nice smile. "Who?"

The smile vanished. For a moment, I thought he was going to shoot me. Instead, he closed the door and locked it.
"Ms. Cross is a problematic person," he said. "She has access to information she doesn't understand. She has asked questions she shouldn't ask. And now she has hired a private detective to find answers that were classified for a reason."
"What reason?"
"The reason is that Project NIGHTFALL detected a signal in 1935. A signal from outside our solar system. We've been trying to understand it for twelve years. Twelve years, Mr. Callahan, and we have learned exactly one thing: the beings who sent that signal are not friendly, and the more they learn about us, the more dangerous we become."
"Then why keep listening?"
"Because stopping is worse. If we stop, they'll know we're afraid. And if they know we're afraid, they'll come."
I should have left then. I should have walked out of that warehouse, burned the five hundred dollars, and gone back to checking on cheating husbands and missing wallets. But I didn't. I asked the question that got me into trouble.
"What did the signal say?"
Morris looked at me for a long time. Then he said: "It said 'Don't answer.' And we answered anyway."
The next morning, I found out what "answered" meant. Dr. Finch hadn't died of heart failure. He had been found in his observatory with his hands on a telegraph key, his mouth open in a scream that had frozen on his face. The telegraph key had been sending a message—continuous, automated, triggered by Finch's last conscious action. The message contained coordinates. Coordinates to what, I didn't know. But Finch's notebook said "Don't answer," and Morris said we had answered anyway, and somewhere between those two facts was the reason three scientists had died in accidents.
I went back to Vivian Cross. Her apartment was on the Sunset Strip, third floor, no doorman. I knocked. No answer. I knocked again. The door was unlocked.
The apartment was empty. Not just empty of people—empty of everything. No furniture. No clothes. No personal items. Just bare walls and a bare floor and a single envelope on the bare table in the center of the room. Inside the envelope was a photograph—Finch, standing in front of his telescope, smiling. On the back, in handwriting I recognized from the notebook: "Don't answer."
And below that, in different handwriting, smaller: "Too late."
I sat on the bare floor of the empty apartment and tried to think. Vivian Cross was gone. Dr. Finch was dead. Morris wanted me to drop it. The signal had been answered. And somewhere out there, in the space between the stars, something had heard us.
My phone rang at 4 PM. It was Morris.
"Mr. Callahan," he said. "I think you've learned enough. I suggest you forget everything you've seen today."
"I don't forget things, Captain."
"Then you should start. For your own sake."
He hung up. I sat in my office for three hours, staring at the five hundred dollars on my desk. Then I picked up the phone and called a number from Finch's notebook—a number I hadn't recognized before but now realized was a direct line to the NIGHTFALL facility in New Mexico.
It rang four times. Someone picked up.
"This is Jack Callahan," I said. "I want to know what we sent."
There was a long silence on the other end. Then a voice, calm and precise: "You already know. You just don't know that you know."
And then I understood. My memory had gaps. Months of 1944 that I couldn't account for. A period when I had been in the service but couldn't remember where.
