The Gaslight Door

The iron door clicked shut behind him, and Arthur Pendelton stood in the reading room's blue darkness. Gas lamps burned on every table — thirteen of them, counting the one by the window — but he had turned them all down before he crossed the threshold. The Museum was not supposed to be open after eight. He was not supposed to be here. He was nineteen years old and possessed of neither permission nor fear.

The shelves rose above him like the walls of a cathedral. Not the kind of cathedral with stained glass and chanting monks, but the other kind — the one built of paper and ink, the kind where the silence was heavier than any prayer. Arthur had found the Ashworth Codex three weeks ago, buried in a bundle of donation receipts and cataloguing error reports. Thirty-four pages of handwritten notes, diagrams of what looked like London's sewer system, and marginalia that read like a spiritual text.

"Who goes there?"

The voice came from the stairwell. Arthur did not move. He had learned that stillness was his greatest advantage. When the gas lamp flared in the doorway and revealed the tall figure of Night Superintendent Ellery, Arthur remained exactly where he stood — between table seven and shelf twelve, the Codex warm in his coat pocket.

"Boy," Ellery said, taking in the pale face, the nearly white eyes that caught the gaslight and threw it back like reflected glass. "You have some nerve coming back."

"I need to make a copy," Arthur said. His voice was steady. He had practiced this sentence in the mirror of St. Jude's dormitory at 3am, when the other boys were snoring and the fog pressed against the window like a living thing. "Page twenty-two. The notation about the underground channels beneath Whitechapel — it references a source in the Museum archives that I need to cross-reference."

Ellery stepped closer. He was a tall man with a beard the color of rust and eyes that had seen too many boys like Arthur — the pale ones, the quiet ones, the ones who looked like they had been cut out of a different world and pasted into this one. "You are the orphan. The one with the eyes."

Arthur said nothing. He had learned that silence was often the correct answer.

"You've been here every night for three weeks," Ellery said. "Miss Fawcett lets you in during the day. I didn't think you'd be stupid enough to come after hours."

Arthur's hand touched the Codex in his pocket. Page twenty-two was not about underground channels. It was about something else — something that made his pulse quicken even though he told himself it shouldn't. The notation described a series of chambers beneath the city that Dr. Edmund Ashworth had mapped over twenty years of nocturnal exploration. Chambers that connected to places Arthur had never seen and did not expect to find.

"If you're going to stay," Ellery said, "sit at table three. Not table seven. Table seven is reserved."

For a fraction of a second, Arthur considered asking who table seven was reserved for. Instead, he nodded and moved to table three, where the light was poorer and the shadows were deeper. He opened the Codex to page twenty-two and began to read.

The fog pressed against the Museum's great windows like a thousand pale faces pressing glass. Arthur read until his eyes watered and the gas lamps flickered and the fog outside thinned to a pale grey. He copied three passages into a small notebook he kept hidden inside his coat. When the first light of dawn bleached the fog to something almost beautiful, he closed the Codex, replaced it exactly where he had found it, and walked out through the servant's entrance.

On the street, the morning market was setting up. Fishermen laid their catch on ice. Bakers carried warm bread in wicker baskets. A newspaper boy shouted about the latest scandal in Parliament. Arthur walked through all of it without seeing any of it. His mind was on page twenty-two, on the chambers beneath Whitechapel, on the notation that said, in Dr. Ashworth's careful hand: "The city beneath the city does not belong to any man. It belongs to the people who can see it."

Arthur Pendelton had spent his entire life being told he could not see. The matron at St. Jude's called him half-blind. The other boys called him ghost-eyes. His parents — the people who had brought him to the orphanage gate on a Tuesday in November and left him there with a canvas bag and a loaf of bread — had called him defective.

But in the dark, in the fog, in the blue darkness of the Museum reading room with the gas lamps turned down, Arthur could see more clearly than he had ever seen in his life.

He did not know it yet, but he was about to discover that the ability to see the city beneath the city came with a price. The price was everything he thought he wanted. And the price, Arthur would learn, was always paid in full.

He turned down a narrow street in Whitechapel and walked toward the docks, where a boy with a crooked nose and a pocket full of threepenny bits waited for him at the corner of Osborn Street. Billy Hargreaves had been pickpocketing since he was eight years old. He knew every alley between Spitalfields and the Thames. He also knew, with the absolute certainty of the very young and very poor, that he was going to die young — probably by eighteen, maybe by twenty.

But not today. Today, Billy was waiting for Arthur Pendelton, and he had a job for him that paid sixpence per hour and required nothing more than walking into a dark place and staring at a wall.

"I need you to look at something," Billy said, as soon as he saw Arthur's pale eyes catching the morning light. "It's in a cellar under a pub on Dorset Street. Some bloke pays me to bring people down there. Says he needs someone who can read the walls."

Arthur looked at Billy's crooked nose, at the eager expression on a face that was too young to be this dirty. He thought of page twenty-two, of Dr. Ashworth's notes about the chambers beneath the city. He thought of the matron's voice telling him he could see nothing worth seeing.

"What do the walls say?" Arthur asked.

Billy grinned. "That's why I need you. Tell me what the walls say."
