Clara Whitfield sat at the farthest table, her Latin Vergil open before her, her pen moving with a speed that suggested not comprehension but rebellion—as if she were daring the words to keep up. The other girls had taken to calling her "the silent one," which was almost kinder than what they whispered when she opened her mouth. It was on a Tuesday in November that the visitor from Eton arrived. He came with Master Thornton, the Latin master, and introduced himself as Mr. Arthur Ashworth—representative of the Eton Grammar Exchange Programme. He was nineteen, tall for his age, with the sort of face that people described later as "distinguished" though at the time all Clara noticed was how quiet he was. Not the quiet of someone who had nothing to say, but the quiet of someone who had listened long enough to understand the value of silence. He sat beside her at the library table while Master Thornton conferred with the headmistress. He looked at her Vergil, at the marginalia she had filled in—corrections, mostly, of the printed translation. "You disagree with Blayney's rendering of line four," he said. It was not a question. Clara closed her mouth halfway through the breath that would have been an excuse. "The subjunctive is wrong. It should be 'vellem'—I would wish—not 'vellem.' I would have wished." Arthur looked at her. Not at her dress—which was second-hand, mended at the hem, the colour of weak tea—but at her face. As if looking at a map and finding something worth studying. "You're right," he said. "That's a good catch. Most people don't even notice Blayney's wrong." "I noticed," Clara said. Then immediately wished she hadn't spoken. Her Yorkshire accent rang in her own ears like a struck bell—harsh, unmistakable, embarrassingly provincial. Arthur nodded. He did not smile. He did not correct her. He simply turned the page and said, "Show me what else you've found." II They met every Tuesday after that, and occasionally on Thursdays when Arthur happened to be in London on family business. They did not arrange these meetings—it was too formal for that. They simply found themselves at the same table in the same library, as if the building had a will. Clara learned that Arthur Ashworth was heir to the Earl of Ashworth and that he hated it. He learned that Clara Whitfield was the daughter of a bankrupt cloth merchant from Leeds and that she had stopped mentioning Leeds three months after arriving at St. Editha's. He brought her books. Not the genteel novels the other girls discussed at tea—Austen and the Brontës, whose reputations were safe because everyone agreed they were proper—but books no one at St. Editha's had heard of. Milton's prose. A collection of Sappho fragments. A volume of Keats's letters, which she read in one sitting and returned with her face the colour of fire. "You're crying," he said. He did not sound alarmed. "I am not," she said. It was a lie. "It's just the dust." He moved away from the window. There was no dust. By December, they were discussing philosophy. By January, they were discussing love—not the polite kind discussed in drawing rooms, but the ugly, inconvenient, inconveniently inconvenient kind that ruined marriages and made women write bad poetry and made men drown in the Thames. "I think love is mostly cowardice," Arthur said one afternoon, his breath fogging in the unheated library. Arthur's mother was visiting St. Editha's—something the girls would later gossip about endlessly, though Clara was not one of them. Mrs. Ashworth was a tall woman with hair the colour of iron and a smile that opened but never arrived. She toured the school with the headmistress and stopped at the library. There, she saw Arthur talking to a girl at the farthest table. She saw the books. She saw the girl's dress. And then, because the universe has a particular cruelty for people who have spent their lives building walls only to discover the walls are made of paper, she saw something in the girl's face that reminded her of someone she had known before. "Your mother is here, Clara," Mrs. Ashworth said to the headmistress, loud enough for every girl in the library to hear. "Is she?" Clara's pen broke. Ink bled across the page like a wound. Mrs. Ashworth's housekeeper—a woman named Mrs. Gable who had come up from Yorkshire twenty years ago and had never once mentioned a daughter—stood in the doorway, her face the colour of ash. Arthur stood up. "Mother—" "Stay seated, Arthur," Mrs. Ashworth said. Her voice was the sound of a knife being drawn. "I would like to hear what this young lady has to say for herself." Clara stood up. She was seventeen years old and she had never in her life said anything for herself that anyone wanted to hear. "My mother is Mrs. Gable," she said. Her accent was loud in the quiet room. Yorkshire loud. Leeds loud. The loud of people who do not polish their vowels before they speak. "She has been in your service for twenty years. She sends me money every month. She has done her duty. I have done mine." Mrs. Ashworth's smile arrived this time. It was the kind of smile that had been practised in mirrors. "How honourable. How very honourable." Arthur did not move. He remained standing at the table, his hand on the back of Clara's chair, his face a mask of something that was not anger and was not fear and was not any of the words people used when they wanted to describe something they could not actually feel. "What will you tell your father?" Clara asked. "What has already been told," Arthur said. "Only sooner." IV The last Tuesday of March was cold in a way that felt like punishment. London fog pressed against the library windows like a living thing wanting in. Arthur came at four o'clock. They had not arranged to meet—that would have been improper—but he came anyway, and he came with a coat that was too thin for the weather and a face that had not slept. They sat at their usual table. They did not open any books. "I have to go back to Eton tomorrow," he said. "I know." "My mother and the Earl have discussed the matter." "I know." "The Pembertons are acceptable. The match is—politically expedient." "I know." Clara was sewing. She had brought a small box of thread and needles and a dress that needed mending—her third dress, the best one, the one she wore to chapel. She was sewing the cuff back on. Her mother would have done it. Her mother, who was ironing someone else's shirts in a basement on the other side of London, would have done it with gentler hands and fewer tears on the fabric. "Clara," Arthur said. He said her name. Not Miss Whitfield. Not the silent one. Clara. "You should come with me. To Eton. To London. There are schools—women's colleges that—there are options." She looked up from her sewing. She saw his face—the lines around his eyes that were not there in November, the tension in his jaw, the way his hand was still on the back of her chair, the same hand it had been in November, except now it was trembling. "Arthur," she said. "I am seventeen years old. I have never left Yorkshire except for three weeks at a cousin's in Manchester, and I ran away from that because I was homesick. I cannot leave my mother. And even if I could—" He was waiting. "And even if I could," she said, "you are going to marry Lady Beatrice Pemberton. And I am not going to be the reason you disappoint your father and ruin your mother's reputation and become a man who is known for being the boy who chose a sewer's daughter over a peer's daughter. I am not cruel, Arthur. I am not even that brave." He closed his eyes. When he opened them, they were wet. "You are the bravest person I have ever known." She did not believe him. But she was glad he said it. They sat in the fog for two hours. They discussed Eliot's Middlemarch. They discussed whether Dorothea Brooke deserved better. They discussed whether love was something you felt or something you decided to feel, and whether there was any difference. At six o'clock, Arthur stood up. He put his hand on the table. He looked at her. "Goodbye, Clara," he said. "Goodbye, Mr. Ashworth," she said. She never called him Arthur. He never called her anything but Miss Whitfield, which was the most intimate thing he ever said to her. Three months later, the engagement was not broken so much as rearranged—politely, quietly, the way rearrangements are done when everyone involved is a grown person who understands that feelings are not a currency the world accepts. Arthur was betrothed to a girl with a larger fortune and a quieter conscience. Clara was in her aunt's small apartment on the edge of Bloomsbury when she heard the news. Her aunt, a widow who knitted shawls for people who could pay, was reading a letter from a friend in the ton. "Mrs. Pemberton is devastated, of course. But one must understand, the Ashworth fortune is not what it was, and the Earl has always been a practical man." Clara was mending a sock. She paused. The needle stopped.
