The Rooftop
Rain fell on Tommy Whitfield's jacket like it had a personal grudge against him. He stood at the edge of the parking garage roof, his gun drawn, his breath coming in small measured puffs that fogged the cold November air. Below him, the streets of Manhattan were wet and shining and empty except for the occasional cab splashing through a puddle with the reckless abandon of drivers who had learned that rain made people invisible.
The target was twenty feet away, backed against the HVAC unit, hands raised. He was young — early twenties, maybe — wearing a hoodie and sneakers and looking at Tommy's gun the way a deer looks at a car headlight: with the desperate hope that if he stays still enough, the thing will pass him by.
"Drop it," Tommy said. His voice was flat. Three years on Homicide had flattened his voice the way rain had flattened his jacket.
The young man's hands went higher. "I don't have anything. I swear."
"I see the wallet," Tommy said. He had seen it the moment he'd come up the stairwell — a brown leather wallet in the kid's right hand, clutched like a talisman. Not a gun. Not a knife. A wallet. "But your posture says weapon. Shoulders squared. Weight on the balls of your feet. You're ready to run or fight. Not to surrender."
"I was running because I was scared."
"Of what?"
The kid's eyes went wide. "Of you. You came out of nowhere with a gun."
Tommy had come up the stairwell quietly. He was good at that — quiet movement, quiet presence, the ability to appear in a room before anyone knew he was there. It was a skill he had developed in his first year on the force, before the rooftop, before the rain, before the moment that everyone would remember differently.
"Show me the wallet," Tommy said.
The kid hesitated. Then, slowly, he lowered his right hand and opened the wallet. It was brown leather, worn at the edges, filled with cash and cards and a photograph of a woman and a child. Tommy lowered his gun four inches. This was the moment. The moment where he made the decision that would define the next thirty years of his life.
He saw what he expected to see: a wallet, cash, a family photo. He did not see what was in the kid's left hand — a thin, almost invisible wire that connected the wallet to something in the kid's pocket. A tripwire for a recording device. Tommy would learn this later. At the moment, his brain processed the wallet and filed it under NON-THREAT and his hand lowered the gun to a ready position, not a dropped position.
But the kid flinched.
It was small — a fraction of a second, a tightening of the shoulders, a micro-movement of the left hand. To anyone else, it would have been invisible. But Tommy had spent three years studying the micro-movements of guilty and innocent people, and he recognized this one: the flinch of someone who expects to be shot.
His gun went up. His brain fired the command that three years of training had encoded into muscle memory. The shot was clean — center mass, if his aim had been true. But his aim was not true. The bullet passed through the rain, through the space between the kid's ear and his shoulder, and disappeared into the wet concrete of the HVAC unit behind him.
Silence. Then: "You're crazy."
Tommy lowered his gun. The rain ran down his face like tears he would not cry. The kid was right. He was crazy. Or he was trained. The line between those two things was thinner than anyone wanted to admit.
The kid turned and ran. Tommy did not chase him. He stood on the rooftop and watched the rain wash bullet marks off concrete that had seen a million bullet marks before this one.
Danny Morrissey found him twenty minutes later, coming up the stairwell with his hands in his jacket pockets and a look on his face that said he had already decided what story to tell.
"Whitfield," Danny said. He was six feet of Irish-American cop — broad-shouldered, square-jawed, the kind of guy who believed in the job because his father had believed in the job and his father's father before him. "What happened up here?"
Tommy looked at his partner. "I made a mistake."
"No," Danny said. "We all make mistakes. The question is what you do with the ones you can't take back."
Tommy looked out at the city — Manhattan stretching to the horizon, the Hudson black and infinite, the bridges holding up the weight of a million lives that would never know that on this rooftop, in this rain, a twenty-year-old kid had lived and a thirty-four-year-old detective had died.
"I'm going to the bathroom," Tommy said.
And he walked past Danny, down the stairs, past the cars and the wet streets and the city that had already forgotten him, into the fluorescent-lit silence of a bathroom on the fourth floor, where he stared at his reflection in the mirror and saw a man with a damaged left eye — the pupil grey-white from a bullet graze that had passed through his tactical glasses — and knew, with a certainty that was both terrible and absolute, that he would never look at the city the same way again.
Six months later, Tommy sat at a desk in a private investigator's office on East 42nd Street, ignoring his phone, reading the newspaper, waiting for nothing in particular. The PI who rented him this desk — a man named Frick who charged two hundred dollars a month and never asked questions — was out to lunch. The office smelled like old coffee and old decisions.
The door opened. A woman walked in. She was maybe twenty-five, dark-haired, sharp-featured, wearing a coat that had been expensive three winters ago and was still good but showed its age in the places that mattered.
"I'm looking for Tommy Whitfield," she said. Her voice was flat. Not hostile. Not friendly. The voice of someone who had decided what she was going to say and was not interested in changing her mind.
"That's me," Tommy said. He did not stand up.
She sat down without being invited. She put a photograph on the desk. It showed a young man — late teens, maybe — smiling at the camera with a gap between his front teeth that made him look younger than he was.
"Where is my brother?" she asked.
Tommy looked at the photograph. He looked at the woman. He looked at his own reflection in the dark window behind her and saw the damaged eye, the tired face, the man who had walked down the stairs from that rooftop six months ago and had not stopped walking since.
"I don't know," he said. It was the truth. But it was also the beginning of something else.
