The class continued. Tom walked them through an example: a student arguing in favor of community college tuition being free. He wrote the claim on the board: Free community college tuition would benefit society by increasing educational access and reducing income inequality. He wrote the counterclaim: Free tuition would be costly and might reduce the incentive for students to take their education seriously.

"Address the counterclaim," he said. "How do we respond?"

James O'Brien raised his hand. James was twenty-four years old and a veteran who had served two tours in Afghanistan and who was using his GI Bill to earn his high school equivalency and then, he hoped, to go on to something more. He sat in the third row, close to the door, and he had a habit of scanning the room when he thought no one was looking—a habit that Tom had noticed and understood, because James's eyes moved the way soldiers' eyes move: always checking exits, always assessing threats, always preparing for the next thing that could go wrong.

The class laughed. Tom smiled. It was a good response, and it was honest, and it came from someone who understood what it meant to take education seriously because he had sacrificed for the opportunity to have it.

James nodded. He picked up his pen. He opened his notebook. He looked at the essay he had been writing before he fell asleep and he continued writing, his hand trembling slightly, his eyes on the page, his breathing slow and steady.

Tom returned to the front of the room and continued the lecture. He did not mention what had happened. He did not ask James if he was okay. He did not offer to speak with him after class or to help him find counseling services or to do anything beyond what he was already doing, which was teaching a class to a room full of students who needed to be taught and who would benefit from being taught well.

He taught them about counterarguments. He taught them about rebuttals. He taught them about intellectual honesty.

After class, Maria stayed behind. She stood at the front of the room while the other students filed out and she closed her blue notebook and looked at Tom with an expression that was part gratitude and part something else—something that Tom could not name but that he recognized because he had seen it in the mirror most mornings: the expression of someone who is carrying a weight and knows that the weight will never go away but that carrying it anyway is the point.

"Professor Riley," she said. "I passed the nursing fundamentals quiz. The one from last week."

Tom felt something move in his chest. It was small—small and quiet and almost invisible—but it was there. "That is excellent, Maria. I am proud of you."

"I know you are," she said. And then, after a pause: "Thank you. For this class. If you had not been here, I probably would not have tried."

She left. Tom stood in the empty classroom and looked at the empty desks and the empty whiteboard where he had written counterargument and rebuttal and intellectual honesty and he thought about what Maria had said and he felt something that was not pride and was not satisfaction and was not any of the emotions that people talk about when they talk about teaching as a calling.

It was smaller than that. It was quieter. It was the feeling of a single light turning on in a room full of darkness. Not enough to see by. But enough to know that you are not alone.

He packed up his things. He turned off the projector. He turned off the lights. He walked down the hallway past the empty classrooms and the empty offices and the empty bulletin boards that had once held flyers for events that had happened months ago and nobody had removed.

He walked out of the building into the March cold and stood in the parking lot for a moment and looked at the sky. It was gray and low and the wind was blowing off the river and it was cold enough to make his eyes water.

He got into his car—a ten-year-old Honda Civic whose heater worked only on the highest setting and only if you hit the dashboard in just the right way—and he started the engine and hit the dashboard and the heater came on and he drove home through the empty streets of Kansas City and parked in front of his building and walked up three flights of stairs and opened the door to his apartment and took off his coat and hung it on the back of a chair and sat down at his desk and opened the next stack of papers and began to grade.

There were forty-five of them. It would take until midnight. He would order pizza and eat it in front of the computer and grade through the pizza grease and the fatigue and the cold that seeped through the windows because the landlord still had not fixed the heating.

He would do it because it was his life. Because he had chosen it. Or because it had chosen him. Because the distinction no longer mattered.

Because tomorrow, at 7:30, he would walk into Room 304 and fifteen students would sit in their seats and he would click on the projector and the slide would appear on the screen and he would say "Good morning" and begin to teach.

And Maria would be there, in the front row, with her blue notebook and her dark circles and her fierce, quiet determination. And James would be there, in the third row, close to the door, with his pen and his notebook and his hands that sometimes shook. And eight other students would be there, each one carrying a weight that was their own and that they carried alone and that they carried anyway.

He would teach them about thesis statements and counterarguments and intellectual honesty. He would grade their papers and write his comments and sign his name at the bottom and move on to the next one.

That was all.

That was everything.
